(Yes. I know. Still no pregnancy category. We heard the heartbeat…but that doesn’t mean I’m still not paralyzed with fear that it will all go wrong right NOW.)
I let myself look in the baby section today. See? LilZ’s Dad and I were young and poor when LilZoot was born. I don’t know if I ever went shopping JUST for baby things. We were give so much by so many people, I didn’t need too. But I have said, a dozen times over, that this time? Will be different. As soon as I feel comfortable with the future of this pregnancy? I’m going to buy and buy and buy until the Zoot family is forced to eat nothing but canned beets and we’re all wiping our butts with old newspapers.
So, to prep for the Baby Shopping Spree of 2005, I thought I would just VISIT the baby section today. I mean, we did hear the heartbeat last night, that’s a good sign, right? No harm in looking, right? And then I saw the thing that made me realize the terror that looms before us.
Baby socks.
OH MY GOD. They are so FREAKIN tiny. I can’t even keep MrZ’s BigFoot athletic socks from disappearing into the Laundry Void, how in the HELL am I supposed to keep track of socks smaller than my POOPS. Seriously. Have you seen those things? TINY. Soooo Tiny. There is no way I will every be able to keep even one pair united after one wash, much less dozens of them.
And let me just say - those sleepers and onesies aren’t much bigger than MrZs socks, so I’ll probably lose all of those too. Hell, I’ll probaby lose the BABY now that I think about it. They’re tiny when they’re born, aren’t they? Holy Crap. I’m totally going to lose the Baby at the Mall, arent I? My sockless baby will be lost forever because he’ll be so tiny I can’t keep up with him.
*sigh*
Good thing I have LilZ around. He’s always been the master at finding my car keys when I misplace them, hopefully he’ll have a sibling-locater that is just as efficient.
Speaking of tiny things. Do you remember the cartoon The Littles? MrZ and I thought of it the other night for the first time in AGES. We told TiVo to record the next showing for us. I can’t wait.
Yes, I know. The pregnant mind sure does wander, doesn’t it?

Whoa, the Littles is still coming on somewhere? I will have to check that out.
I’d pin the teeny tiny baby socks together before throwing them in the wash. That, or put them all in a mesh bag and throw ‘em in like that. As for losing the baby? Girl, don’t sweat it. Look how well LilZoot turned out; clearly you have a natural talent for this mother thing.
Babies cry, you won’t lose ‘em. They don’t let you
As for the socks, do as Fraulein said. Or hand wash them. But, ew, who has time for that! ^_^ I’d suggest the mesh bag, though. Those work wonders.
You got me trying to remember the Little’s Theme song and all I can come up with is “Come along with the snorks…” Wrong show, oh well. Anyway, when I googled it to see if I could find it online, I found a site that has a mini-Littles episode, http://yahooligans.yahoo.com/content/tv, incase you can’t wait for the TIVO.
I’ve been reluctant to say anything because I don’t want to be a jinx (not that I really have that power), but I’m going to go out on the proverbial limb here and tell you that WHEN you’re comfortable, send me your snail mail addy because someone just MIGHT need to knit something for that baby and send it to you, but not just yet.
I have such a weakness for little, tiny baby socks! My kids are 19 and soon to be 16 and I still stop and just pet the baby socks. Someday…..when I am a grandmother ( not anytime soon I hope)……I will be dangerous in the baby department. I mean….dangerous. I am excited that you heard the heartbeat! Take care.
I have a solution for the baby sock losing problem. Get one of those mess laundry bags (or a pillow case that you can somehow fasten closed) and wash the socks in that. That way none of the little sockies can escape into the great void of sockland. This will also keep babyZ from having to go around with one sock on all the time, or even worse no socks. Then again they usually kick one off all the time anyway, but at least it won’t be from your laundry. Congrats hearing babyZ’s heartbeat last night!
Maybe I should have read the first comment before making my own??? Sorry for the redundancy!
Well, I haven’t lost any of my kids yet and you are a WAY BETTER mom than me, so I have complete faith in you! Oh, and the socks, can’t help ya there .. I seem to be the queen of losing kids socks.
Baby tights are actually my weakness, even more than socks. Even the sheer kneesocks. D’s nephew wore white kneesocks on his chubby 7-month legs, and it just damn near KILLED me.
Heeeeee. Maybe you could buy one of those machine washable lingerie bags and put all the socks in there before putting them in the washing machine. That way it’s either big enough that it doesn’t get lost or it saves you time by losing them all at once instead of over the course of time.
I went in the baby section to get something for my friend and had a hard time leaving. And I don’t have kids yet. I made myself go to Wal*Mart right away and follow a family of the most annoying kids I could find to battle the baby fever. Worked like a charm…
You could take the lazy way out and just only buy white baby socks — that way when you lose one or two, well, who cares?
At least your mind is still wandering. My friend just entered her 2nd trimester and she has lost her memory all together - it is actually kind of funny bc I can call her up and say, Let’s do X and she says no and I reply, “But you promised” Yes I can be evil I know!
Yeah, I was going to say the same thing: mesh bag, like for lingerie and “fine washables”. Took me a while to finally come up with that solution.
Don’t you remeber they grow so fast that by the time you lose all their socks you have to buy new ones… and how much fun is that!
You mean I’m not the only one loosing socks ALL the time?
when the time comes to wash up the tiny baby clothes, buy one of those mesh bags designed for washing delicates. Should keep everything together all nice like.
When Girlscout and Boyscout were babies, I bought a netted/mesh bag with a zipper and threw all small items that would get lost in the laundry in that. It saved many stress free days of laundry with all the socks in the little garment bag.
I have lost every single baby sock at this point, without the baby (at 1 month old) ever having worn them. My solution is to only use sleepers with feet, like you mentioned. I have lost quite a few of those, as well. But, like Tanya said, it’s time for the next size up anyway.
Hey Zoot!! Dontcha worry about losing the baby (lol) he/she will make sure that you don’t forget about him/her, TRUST me, lol I agree with a few of the other posters, use one of thise mesh baggie things, save ya some stress!
