What the HELL?
Category: T.V. Junkie |

Okay. I have a LOT of issues with last night’s episode of Lost so bare with me. And possibly help me understand them before I cry over the detour of one of my favorite TV shows into the land of sophomore year failures.

First of all - MrZ and I decided that it was like EVERY character was acting totally different than they should. I mean, Locke has always been the guy who encourages people to go with what the island is telling them, to investigate it further. He is also usually trusting and gives people the benefit of the doubt. But last night? Not so much. And Charlie? He was fine until he went batshit trying to baptize the baby. Up until then? He was just confused, why did he lose it and start acting so weird? Especially if he wasn’t using? And why is Claire so unwilling to at least LISTEN to him because yes, he screwed up, but he has been there for her through everything, and he didn’t use, I don’t expect her to embrace him but can’t she at least be his friend and TALK to him? And HURLEY? HURLEY was scowling at Charlie with everyone else! The way everyone behaved just seemed different than the characters they have been drawn as.

And the story itself. What the heck? Are we supposed to read into the Locke (John) punching Charlie in the water as some sort of baptism for Charlie? Because I don’t WANT to see it as that because Charlie was doing okay. And what was up, was he supposed to be saving Aaron from himself? Or was the point of it all so that in the end Aaron would be baptized. And if so - WHY? Why does he NEED to be baptized in a show that has rarely brought religion into this experience.

I DONT UNDERSTAND. WHAT THE HELL?

Okay - your turn. Explain it all to me so that I dont worry the writers are ruining the show. Thanks.

Dude, all I know is that I never get to watch TV and I turned on the last few minutes last night while nursing Alex (yes, my entire LIFE revolves around his appetite). All I could think was “Oooh, boy, the born-agains are going to be ALL up in arms over this” (mainly the Get Baptized=Go to Heaven thing)

I dunno. Wish I could help.

  2. Fraulein N Says:

Yeah, I … don’t know. Does anybody know what Locke was fiddling with in the hatch? I think there were wires involved? The lighting in the hatch SUCKS.

  3. MoMMY Says:

I can’t help you feel better as I was ready to punch EVERYONE last night as they were being incredibly different and MEAN to Charlie. I really don’t think he’s been using and this whole everyone hate Charlie thing is pissing me off. I would have totally shut it off if I wasn’t such a wuss and hoping they would somehow explain. And WHY did Locke keep all the heroin? What is up with him? So not like the Locke they’ve been showing us.

  4. Carrisa Says:

Ha. You got me. I watched disc one and disc 2 of season 1 and then I gave up trying to go back and figure this show out. I’ve watched all of season 2 so far, but I’m a bit disappointed. Yet I still watch hoping it will get better because SO MANY PEOPLE love the show.

  5. Erin Says:

Frauline, Locke was changing the combination on the gun closet which now apparently doubles as a heroin closet. Which brings me to the question *I* had… why did he KEEP the heroin? Why not just get rid of all of it?

  6. Carley Says:

I have to comment today because Lost gets me SO riled up!!
Last nights episode seemed like a set up for future episodes to me. I’m not sure why Aaron had to be baptised, but I’m guessing that will come into play sooner than later and will have something to do with “The Others” taking the children and also to do with why Claire’s psychic said only she could raise the baby and then sent her on the plane that was going to crash. And I SO agree about the whole Claire/Charlie comment. She could at least LISTEN to him. Sheesh. He’s done nothing but help her and protect her and Aaron. And Locke is definitely acting creepier than usual. I’m not sure what’s up with him. And why did he keep the Mary statues? (Oh, and Fraulein - he was changing the combination on the gun safe yet again!) I have heard people speculate that Locke is working with “The Others”. I’m not sure if I believe that, but who knows with this show. And speaking of Hurley - what’s up with Libby? She seems a little sneaky to me. I don’t know - there is just something about her that seems secretive. Is she another plant like Ethan or Goodwin?
Last night wasn’t an overly exciting episode, but I think it is laying ground work for what is to come . . .

  7. pookiesmom Says:

I agree with Carley. I think this episode was just laying ground work for later episodes. Although it was awfully painful to watch. The only saving grace was a couple of funny Sawyer lines. Does the man ever have a bad line? I have thought something was different with Locke for a while now. He started seeming different to me during “Collision”.

  8. mary Says:

The thing I was most confused by was Hurley and that other chick doing laundry. Where did they get soap? Why does the island have a washing machine? Why do they need to wash their clothes when they’re lost on an island?

  9. alfredsmom Says:

I nearly wanted to cry when everyone let Locke punch Charlie and then just walked away. MADE NO SENSE. And Locke is DEFINETLY acting wierd. And Libby? There is something wierd there too. Wonder where Hurley knows her from? I dont think it was just from stepping on her foot in the plane, I think there is something more there.

  10. pookiesmom Says:

Ok, so I’m delurking FINALLY! I think that Charlie feels responsible for saving his loved ones. His mom told him to save them when she gave him the piano and he was always trying to save his brother. Then he had the dream with everyone telling him to save Aaron and Eko told him the story of John the Baptist. I think that Charlie decided he had to be the one to baptize Aaron so he could save him, but Claire wouldn’t talk to him so he had to take drastic measures. A little crazy? yes, but that’s what I got from it.

  11. Anonymous Says:

I was disappointed with the episode when I watched it last night. I’m still trying to digest it.

  12. Em Says:

I think there is alot more to Locke then what they have shown on the show so far, but I can’t say quite yet that I think he may be one of the Others. And Charlie may not have used, but he kept some statues which, to me, shows that he wasn’t sure he would never use. Like he kept them just in case… I feel bad for Charlie, but at the same time, he did lie and it’s his lies that are making him look bad to the rest of the people. Also, I agree with alfredsmom that Hurley knows Libby from somewhere other then stepping on her foot in the plane. There is something up with her…

  13. amber Says:

Everything about last night’s episode was OFF, in my opinion… borderline COMPLETELY WRONG, which made me very upset. I wouldn’t have been quite so upset if at least Claire had come to Charlie after her and the baby were baptized to talk, if nothing else.

And, yes… Locke, hell EVERYONE, seemed to be acting differently than they’ve led us to believe so far in the series. At first, I thought that Locke was being blinded by the whole “There’s heroin on the island, so Charlie’s going to use it” thing, but him putting the Madonnas up on a shelf instead of destroying it, that threw me completely.

Yeah, there’s more, but I don’t want to clog up your comments.

  14. Emily Says:

I also agree that last night’s episode was a set-up for future episodes. It HAS to be becuase you are so right everyone was little *off*.
BUT I think that Claire did sort of listen to Charley, because she DID baptise Aaron. So in a round-about way she followed thru with his wishes! Right?

  15. Erratic Prophet Says:

Hurley has to know Libby from the hospital. She’s a shrink, he was a patient. Makes sense.

  16. bad penguin Says:

I felt the episode was off too. I couldn’t believe that Locke wouldn’t listen to Charlie when he said the island was telling him something. And then to hit him like that. Plus, I was very disappointed that even Hurley was mean to him.

And to make it even worse, I watched Lost and taped Veronica Mars, but the tape cut off after the first 15 minutes. If I had known I wasn’t going to be happy with Lost, I would have just watched Veronica.

  17. Janet Says:

I think that Locke kept the heroin because, after all, it CAN be used as a pain killer and I’m sure they don’t have an unlimited supply of pain killers (hence the scene where Jack stitches up Charlie). I think religion has always been an undercurrent in the show…so it makes sense for it to pop up in a big way. It popped up in Eko’s backstory, too. And I agree with Erratic Prophet about where Hurley met Libby…
    Poor Charlie, tho…

  18. brit Says:

Can’t. Read. This. Entry. Have only seen first season of Lost….have to wait till second comes out on netflix.

    shhhh. quiet.

  19. Fraulein N Says:

I agree; Hurley probably knows Libby from the hospital. I get the feeling that she remembers him too but I’m really hoping for Hurley’s sake that she’s not the mole.

Oh, and thanks for all the info on what Locke was doing. I still don’t get why he put the statues up on a shelf; Charlie’s short but dude is not actually a hobbit. I’m sure he could get up there if he tried.

  20. Lisa B Says:

I’ve heard a few people say that night time tv sucks these days. Honestly I don’t even watch tv anymore — if the tv is on, my tiny tyrant pitches a fit unless he gets to watch PBS kids. So keeping the tv off seems to be the easiest thing (except when mommy needs to check e-mail or make dinner. )

  21. GrammyZ Says:

I haven’t watched it yet. Sick you know but I have it on TIVO..but I did read that all of the main characters got pay raises…Good pay raises…..all except Claire…she didnt’ get one…..mmmmmm

  22. Miriam Says:

WTH? Thought I was posting this on this entry, but it ended up on another… sorry Zoot!

My thoughts… I could understand Locke’s change of demeanor because of how close he seems to be to Claire/Aaron now - sort of the papa bear defensiveness, but I was still shocked by the punches and creepy stares (when Charlie pushes past Kate to reach Claire) and confused when Locke decides NOT to tell Claire about the statues. It doesn’t add up. He’s emotionally tied to Claire now, but it will cause issues because this is a man who likes to fly solo. He’s trying to control the things that happen on the island (he’s the only one who knows the combination now) but has in the past been acutely aware of how the island wants to control them. I feel like they were setting up Charlie against Aaron - who will be protected? Who will be saved?
As for Libby… Knows Hurley from the mental hospital, but is increasingly suspicious to me. Possibly working with the Others/psychiatrists on the “project”? She lost credibility with the whole you stepped on my foot when you got on the plane story because Hurley was in the front of the plane and she was in the back. How would that have happened?!?
Also, a random thing to note - I really think that Charlie’s sister in law looks an awful lot like the woman in Desmond’s photo - it’s obviously not Sarah like some would say.

  23. minnie Says:

it’s times like this that i’m glad i don’t watch this show. cuz i get just as upset over the shows i do watch. lol

  24. Erin Says:

I have had a weird feeling about Locke from the beginning… everytime we watch (but especially last night) I say to my husband, “I think he’s not entirely a good guy.” and he poo poos me. I have a feeling I might turn out to be right…

  25. callistawolf Says:

Yeah, pretty much what you said. K and I just kept saying to each other during the show, “What the HECK??” Nothing made sense and NO dquestions were answered (as usual).

And the whole Libby thing has me totally ooked. K thought she might be the other gal from the “movie” about the bunker and all and that’s why she looks familiar? I agree, Hurley couldn’t have stepped on her foot if she was in the tail section. :P
Still love love love the show, but last night was just WEIRD.

  27. Zoe Says:

I didn’t really have too many problems with the episode, but then again, I think Charlie is an effing useless character and have never liked him. I do think Claire was justified in how she acted, though - I know she can be annoying with her constant “Where’s my BAYBEEE!!!”s, but if someone randomly sets a fire and runs off with the baby in his arms and a wild-eyed expression on his face, and then bursts into tears, you have to be slightly wary of them. He was acting like a child, and I think Locke had reason to punch him just to knock some sense into him. I don’t believe for a second that he isn’t using - he looked way too pale and haggard.

What I don’t understand is why Locke didn’t just destory the statuettes. Is he saving them for himself or something?

BUT my main problem was Charlie’s mother’s WEIRD!!! accent. That woman DID NOT have a Manchester accent - she barely sounded English! I already have a big enough problem with Dominic Monaghan’s accent - he’s supposed to be from Manchester but he has this odd affected accent now. Possibly that’s why his character annoys me so much.

  28. andi Says:

My only semi-not-retarded idea is this: the island is giving each person the challenge that they cannot handle…for charlie it is having his very favorite drug at hand and for claire, it is having the baby that she didnt want in the first place and for locke it is having control and not knowing how to use it and for michael it is having the son that he has no idea how to care for…see the trend? okay this is prolly totally ass-crappery, but i thought i would add it anyway…

  29. Isabel Says:

I haven’t watched it yet, because I was too busy watching “Veronica Mars”. I can’t wait to see it tonight…

    and baptism? What the crap?

  30. DeAnn Says:

I am hearing everyone hated it. Here is my advice: WATCH VERONICA MARS. It rocked last night. And always.

I don’t like Lost, though, so I am biased. And mean.
