Remember how my son (and every other teen and pre-teen with cable in America) was obsessed with the new Disney Original Movie High School Musical? Well, he still is. As is every other teen in this town. Last week’s talent show? Featured at least TWO re-enactments of musical numbers from that movie. So, it’s a disease that has overtaken our little community here, and is surely infecting yours as well.
Anyway…MrZ and I put an official moratorium of the music, the movie, the songs, and the dances from that movie for the weekend. Both of us had found ourselves humming the tunes constantly and felt as though our brains were being overtaken by thoughts of bad teen actors and horribly catchy tunes. LilZ felt like he had died and gone to hell when we told him of our temporary ban. We would catch him starting to hum, or doing one of the dances and would have to immediately squash his soul and demand he honor the request, or else we would be forced to do the unthinkable: Delete the movie from TiVo and the soundtrack from Itunes.
(That sound you heard was LilZ screaming, “Nooooooooo…”)
MrZ called me this morning to tell me what transpired after I had left for work. He said as SOON as LilZ stepped out of the shower, he ran to the computer and started to play the soundtrack and do the dances (which he has taught himself from watching the movie so many times). Cisco, our male boston terrier who does not like ANYONE dancing, started barking at him. LilZ, mid-dance said to him, “Leave me alone Cisco, I’ve been waiting to do this ALL WEEKEND.”
Poor kid. It’s like crack, only crack is not as addictive. He had to go without his fix for 48 hours and it almost killed him. But it was the most peaceful 48 hours MrZ and I have known since the movie aired.
*sigh*

I think I’m VERY glad my son is too young to have been interested in this phenomenon. It’s bad enough when the theme song to “Digimon” keeps running through your head. This movie sounds as if it could KILL me.
You may already have seen this site, but it reminded me of you…

am i missing out on something here? i feel like i’m really missing out on something.
luckily, i haven’t heard about this show yet. heh. jealous?
you are SO.NOT.ALONE>
11 year old girl lives here. *shudder*
OMG, I feel your pain! My 12 yr old son begged me to go buy him baseball sleeve shirts. I had no idea why. Well, he’s been wearing them with jeans e.v.e.r.y.d.a.y.
I finally figured out that he’s dressing like the kid from that damn movie! God help us all!
Isn’t it awful? My husband and I were out to dinner WITHOUT the kids and he was humming “Stick to the Status Quo”, I almost stabbed him with the salad fork.
I’m probably going to be hated forever now, but did you know that High School Musical was originally thought of as a three part series? And that was only part one? And there are apparently two more in the works?
Please don’t hate me. Although I’m excited because I totally loved the first one. Although that could be because I deleted it from the DVR after only watching it once.
Somehow my kids missed out on this phenomenon?!?!? They are going to get run out of town by an angry High School Musical-loving mob. My kids are always watching either 1) blooper/home video shows 2) funny animals shows 3)scary animal shows 4) scary supernatural phenomena shows or 5) old, crappy sitcom reruns, i.e. the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air or Full House. Well, it may not be PBS, but at least there aren’t any annoying musical numbers!
The craze is in full swing in our home. Have a 10 and a 11 year old girl here. I haven’t been affected by it too much fortunately. That could end though as I bought them the soundtrack CD on Friday. May have been a mistake? They kept trying to play it in the dining room all day Saturday, I sent it to their room though, where I could hear loud singing a good part of the day
My daughters school Talent show is coming up too and she said there are many kids doing songs from High School Musical as well.
We’re near the Bay Area in CA so apparently it is a nationwide epidemic, lol.
I think I need video of LilZ dancing, just to see for myself .
First…I have NO IDEA what movie you are talking about.
Second…what does Cisco (as in the routers?) have against dancing?
Third? You’re insane
Umm…I’m a 21-year-old senior in college and even I’M addicted to the music/movie. I’m somewhat embarrassed to admit I even bought the soundtrack on iTunes. Haha, I’ve only admitted this to ONE of my friends. But since this posting is anonymous I don’t mind telling the rest of the Internet, too!
Bad news…Disney is bringing it out on dvd with extras and extended scenes…my daughter who is 8 cant wait and is begging for me to buy it the day it comes out.
We TIVO’ed the movie and my 12 year old watched it over and over. And then we recorded it to DVD. And then 3 more times for her friends. I deleted it from the TIVO before she had made copies for everyone in the school! Then my 4 year old was sitting in the tub and I hear…”it’s hard to believe…”
You know the rest! I thought the movie stunk, but it could be worse! At least now she can watch it in her own room! I feel for you.
Why do I love this so much? The best part is that I can only imagine how horrible his weekend must have been becasue all he wanted to do was dance and nobody would let him.
It’s like “Footloose” all over again!
Girl Scout cookies must be laced with coke or something. I’m trying to focus, but the only thing I can think about are those Thin Mints on top of the fridge. *sigh*
Dear God!
I only had to read the title of this post and that damn song was stuck in my head. Damn the DCOM people……DAMN THEM!!
(And now I’m going to tell you that my kids haven’t even watched the entire movie yet. I cannot even begin to imagine the horror that is your life with High School Musical in it.)
Must see the dance. Do take pictures and post. I don’t know what you’re talking about, thank goodness my kids are too young. But it’s so funny that LilZ is dying to do this dance.
I’m with Isabel, it is like Footloose all over again.
I know I left a comment earlier but I came back to read what others wrote and in spite of the fact that there’s a big windy noisey storm outside…………..what do I hear coming from my girls bedroom way upstairs??
Oh Oh Oh……….Stick with the things you knowwwwwwwwww - wo wo”
“Get your head in the game..”
I couldn’t resist.
My god, I am SO uncool, I’ve never seen this apparently very invades-all-free-space-in-your-brain movie! But, I’m sure I knew all the words (sung and spoken) in The Sound of Music when I was 11. And still do.
well it happens to the best of us. I remember myself with every Spice Girls song, Britney’s “Hit me baby….”, and Destiny’s Child when they first came out. Me and my best friend had a dance for everything. We would clear the table and chairs out of the kitchen and make it like our own dance studio. My parents couldn’t stand it so much they would leave the house.
I think this must have been what it was like for my parents during the height of our 1776/Newsies obsession — three girls (15, 9, and 6) watching both movies every single day, singing the songs while setting the table and driving in the car… they never actually banned the films, though I don’t think they were sad when we lost the tapes for six months after a move.
I have a 12 yr. old who TiVo’d High School Musical and was so determined to learn all of the songs and dances that she spent 12 hours replaying the movie!!..but i do have to say that its a pretty good movie for teens and pre-teens
It’s not even a real musical since the music’s very uneven and the cast can’t sing whatsoever. Especially Ashley Tisdale who makes Ashlee Simpson sound like a young Deborah Gibson, ironically Deb is now an actual stage actress.
The young
fans might get bummed out when they go watch an actual musical like “Grease”, “Cabaret”, “Rent”, etc.
I miss watching classic Mickey, Donald, Goofy cartoons on Disney Channel before it turned into “MTV Jr.”
I fell you pain guys i mean just yesterday i was on myspace when our topic suddenly changed from the show invader zim to high school mucical. i was so angry i told the other invaders that i didnt know what the heck they were talking about then they started calling me a music hater. i saw the movie today but it totaly dissapointed me.HAS THE WORLD GONE COMPLETELY NUYS OVE HSM. P.S HSM2 COMES OUT SOON SO BE READY!
omg i’m 14 &…..
OMG!!!! I love that movie!!! i want my dad to buy that movie but it’s all sold out!!!!!!
omg omg omg!!! i’d kill for that movie!

*sings: ” It’s hard to believe, that I couldn’t see, that you were always there beside me, thought I was alone with noone to hold, but youwere always right beside me! this feeling’s like no other! I want you to know… I never had someone, that knows me like you do!!!***
omg I love it! what is wrong wit chu peoplez!?
I’m also 14 and, personally, this movie bored me out of my brains….and i LOVE musicals…my favourite being Moulin Rouge…and I just couldn’t…FEEL it…to me it was just another Grease…the same storyline
boy and girl meet before school…end up going to same school….guy breaks girls heart somehow..she sings about it…then BANG everyone’s happy….
I’m getting annoyed by all the media buzz….there’s the singalong, the dance-a-long, merchandise, t-shirts…and Foxtel (cable here in Australia) shows it OVER and OVER and OVER again..you can’t turn on the TV without Zac Effron’s bad haircut and obvious inexperience with lip-synching would appear on the screen…you just can’t get away from the hype…not that there is much in my school….pretty much everyone is tired of it
they showed it to my class as a “treat” and we fell asleep…..
my 5 year old sister likes that movie…what does that tell you?
