Yesterday, NikkiZ woke up around 4:15 or so to eat, so about 4:45 I got out of bed for the day - a good 30 minutes before I usually do. Since I leave the house around 6:10 - this gave me a good chunk of time in the morning to blog, design, clean, do whatever - while NikkiZ stayed asleep.
I woke up at the usual time today (around 5am) and I’m feeling cramped. I don’t think I’ll have time to get all the things done I wanted to get done. This means that 4:30am may be a good time for me to start getting up. It allows me to get all my chores done in the morning instead of at night - lets me blog while not holding a baby - and gives me enough time to finish a WHOLE pot of coffee. Which makes me function better.
BUT 4:30am? Even though I felt better yesterday having woken up that early - it just sounds SO UGLY. Who the hell gets up at 4:30am besides delivery guys. And they probably hate the sound of 4:30am as much as I do. I mean, I realize it may make the rest of my day go better but it just sounds so hateful. Like - starting the day at 4:30am INTENTIONALLY is probably a symptom of insanity and would get me shipped off to a padded room. And if it doesn’t? It SHOULD.

My husband gets up at 4:45, if that helps. He’s a teacher. It’s still a God-awful hour to be awake. Perhaps you could pretend you were in another time zone…
A friend of mine gets up at 4:15 every day so she has time to run 3 miles before work everyday - acutally every other day, on her “off days” she gets up to to do some other form of exercise tourture. SHE GETS UP TO EXERCISE!!!!! SHE is the crazy one. At least you’re insanity acutally allows you free time later on and/or a bit of peace before the real insanity starts.
I normally get up at 5am, but I was having the same problem as you (feeling rushed and whatnot). So I started setting my alarm clock for 4:55 - it’s only 5 min, right? But what I did was closed my eyes and set the actually time earlier (if I didn’t close my eyes, I would *know* that the clock is actually 15 min fast so when it says 4:55 I would think “Oh, I still have another 15 min”). Anyways, just a way I’ve pscyhed myself into thinking I wake up at 4:55 but it’s actually like 4:37…..
What time do you go to bed?
I think I’d forgotten there WAS a 4:30 am.
4:30 am sounds dreadful. I wake up at like 6:30 or 6:45… and even that is too early. But I should probably start waking up at 6 or something to train myself for when I have kids… I dunno… 4:30 just seems scary. Especially since you KNOW you’re up till like at least 10 watching all the good tv…. but hey… if you can do it… more power. Amen for coffee!
When I was in the Army we referred to that time as “O dark thirty” (the letter O) saying 4 just seem so cruel.
J’s alarm goes at 3:30 am and he probably gets up 15 minutes later during the week. When he works weekends (and he had to work without a day off for 6 weeks straight after we brought home the baby) he gets up at 4:30. Ugh. Grommet and I usually have our middle-of-the-night-feeding around then but we get to go back to sleep for hours and hours after that, AND I get to stretch out on the whole bed.
I have to ask what time you go to bed? If I was waking up at 4:30am that would put me in bed no latter than 9 o’clock. Am I close?
I’d have to agree. I get up at 6 and at 11 i’m beat and ready for my bed. So 4:30…I’m thinking 8:30 or 9 at LATEST! (and to think I used to be a night owl who stayed up for days…)
I get up a solid two hours before I have to leave the house. I hate rushing through the morning, so it works for me. I say who cares WHEN you get up as long as it saves YOUR sanity!
Ugly is a wonderful word for 4:30 am!
I don’t know how your might find it but, there’s a really great article in the Pursuits section of the Wall Street Journal, from the weekend addition, about this, entitled “When Life Begins at 5: A New Wake-Up Call”. It’s good.
Some points of interest ,”70% of us are not naturally alert and active in the morning”; CNN American Morning anchors are now required to be AT WORk! at 3 a.m.; And this cracks me up for some reason: David Lee Roth wakes at 3:30 to take helicopter-flying lessons before arriving at the studio at 5:15.
OMG…this post….might just be the most effective message for birth control….EVER
Seriously….once we do have kids (which is soon, I hope)….I am gonna miss the sleeping part. ALOT….OMG…so much
If you start getting up a 4:30 every day? I’m never coming to your site again because I’ll hate you for making me feel like such a lazy slug!
My dad has to be AT work at 3:50am every morning, um, yeah.. SEVEN days a week.
He is a district manager for 9 convienence stores and they cant seem to hire enough fulltime managers so he gets to open at least one of the stores every day.
During the week he is usually home by 4pm but last night it was 8pm. On the weekends he is usually home no later than 10am.
Um, yeah. I drag myself out of bed at 8:30am on a daily basis and still struggle to do that. I don’t know how he (or you) do that 8-or-earlier crap.
Well, this would definitely make you crazy. But I swear to god I dreamnt last night that you decided to stop blogging. So whatever you have to do to squeeze us in - I say go for it!
I’ve recently started forcing myself up at 6:30 so I can shower and get dressed peacefully before the baby wakes up. It really sucks when I’m tired, but I enjoy having a few minutes to myself in the morning too!
There’s a 4:30 in the MORNING?!
4:30 am huh? I thought only old people got up that early. Are you going to start eating dinner at 3pm too?
We get up at 3:00 AM. Hubby has to be at work by 4:00. Since I’m the lunch-maker cell-phone-finder and general all around much-needed person, I tend to get up at 2:30. We’re in bed by about 8:00 most nights. Thank God for VCRs or we wouldn’t have seen a TV show since 2003.
I still have my days where I hate it, but it’s a 24 hour world now, so it’s not too bad. If it was 1967 or something, I think I would be in a rubber room by now.
Man. That’s when I go t o bed.
I am a recovering deliveryperson. And I had to get up at 4:30am. And it does, indeed, suck ass.
My little punkin is up like clockwork at 6am. I have just started to master the “get-everything-done-after-she-falls-asleep-at-night-and-finish-the-rest-at-5am” routine.
