Now I’m just a lemming
Category: Stuff I love |

I tried my hardest to watch American Idol last night. I hadnt watched a single episode all season, but I thought I could at least try to watch the finale so I’d know what “America” was talking about today. I only made it through two “Pickler and Puck” sketches and had to turn of the television or else I’d have been forced to jab my eyeballs out with my own fingers. Who is that Pickler Girl and is she a moron in real life or does she just play one on TV?

(I did stick with the show long enough to see an ad for High School Musical being out on DVD. Heh. Got it already, thanks.)

You know - I used to have a bumper sticker on my car that said “KILL YOUR TELEVISION.” No, seriously, I did. This was about seven years ago - long before TiVo. Hell, it was before I even had cable. I used to pride myself on the fact that I didn’t know what half the country was talking about when they’d talk TV. Who Wants To Be A Millionaire was at its prime at that point. I was working at the State Geography Bee and the moderator made a joke about the kids being future “Lifelines” and everyone laughed and I didn’t get it. And that made me PROUD.

Now? I force myself to watch shows I don’t even like, just so I can “get” the jokes the next day.

However, I’m still kinda boycotting Grey’s Anatomy just because it bothers so many people that I won’t watch it. I think one commenter even said, “With all the crap you watch, you should at least try G. A.” Which, you know, I get the sentiment, and it makes sense. BUT - my need to be a stubborn bitch sometimes trumps my need to be a cultural lemming. It doesn’t happen often, that the two personalities have to battle it out, but when it does happen? STUBBORN BITCH always wins.

This is why I chose the perfect mate in MrZ who hopes he can die being able to say he’s never seen Titanic. Irrational stubbornness is a quality that will always unite us. That, and our love of Mexican Food.

    hahahaha

When I was in college, I also prided myself for not knowing what the hell Seinfeld, Friends, etc was about. Then, I graduated and got a life and managed to get in on the action.

When I started the TiVo business (and now just a DVR) I was very vocal in pointing out that I now watch LESS TV and MORE of what I really want to watch. Stating the obvious, of course, because you already know this yourself. BUT, it pisses me off when people act like just because I have a DVR, that means I must watch a lot of TV. I don’t think “live” watchers realize how much time is burned on commercials.

  2. Jenn Says:

Haha! I won’t watch Titanic for the same reason.

I refuse to watch American Idol, but I saw a picture of the two finalists, and I was like, wow, they have an old dude in the finals? Then I read that he was my age. Dude might want to look into some hair dye.

  3. Carrisa Says:

Yeah well my guy is priding himself on never having watched E.T. that’s just sad. Titanic I can understand.

Now hurry up and get to posting about LOST on your tv blog… I need help… or something.

  4. Tracee Says:

I think I was there was the announcer from the Geography Bee made that statement. But who has time to watch TV in college especially when you live your life in the Computer Lab of the Geography Department? (although we nver did miss an episode of Dark Angel - good times…good times…..)

  5. Jerri Ann Says:

Just as recent as 3 years ago I didn’t watch anything but the news and sports. THe first survivor, I was clueless what folks were talking about…but now, we have something we Tivo almost every night..we watch after the boys go to bed at…7:30…ahhh

  6. MrZoot Says:

I actually tried to watch the episode of Grey’s Anatomy that we TiVod for my sister & gave up after about 30 minutes… it sucked pretty bad.

  7. ben Says:

Don’t be hating on Grey’s Anatomy, now.

I quit watching ER about the time George Clooney left. But having watched MASH, St. Elsewhere, and all the other medical shows, I gave Grey’s a chance (because Katherine is so yummy, I suspect)

If you’ve missed Titanic, have you seen Poseidon? I called it “Titanic Inferno” because that’s what it felt like.

Thanks to Tivo I now will NEVER miss another power rangers episode, nor Dragon Tales. Sigh.

  8. ben Says:

I just realized my URL was wrong. Bad blogger, no biscuit!

  9. Janet Says:

love the typo in the second paragraph ;-)
    Dude…Lost??? DID YOU SEE??!

  10. LizzieP Says:

    I’ve never seen Titanic either.

  11. jenn Says:

I thought I was the only person in the world to brag about never seeing Titanic. I am also refusing to watch Grey’s Anatomy b/c everyone else is watching it. I did watch every single episode of Search for the Ultimate Coyote Ugly.
Glad to know I am not the only one with “weird” media habits :)

I saw a couple of AI episodes this season but am proud to say I wasn’t hooked because I frankly didn’t give a turd.

Grey’s, I started watching because it was on after all the other shows I watch on Sunday nights on ABC and why not? By the time I was hooked, everyone else was watching it too. So at least I can’t point to peer pressure on that one. ;)

And LOST…. dang girl, you get posting on that one because holy moses. THat’s not TV, that’s RELIGION. :)

  13. E L Frederick Says:

I have never seen American Idol… not one of them. No season, EVER. Not planning on changing that any time in the future.

Of course now that Battlestar Galactica (Sci-Fi not the original) is on haitus until next season, I really only sit down to watch TV when it’s a movie from the DVD collection. (or the occsional break to scream at Ted Kennedy on CSpan2)

  14. Fraulein N Says:

I can understand being a stubborn bitch. I seriously doubt I’ll ever watch Grey’s Anatomy either. Yeah, I don’t care how fantabulous it is.

But that still doesn’t explain WHY you’ve been slacking on your Lost posts. What up with that, Zoot?

Random comment from a British fan of your blog. Krispy Kremes are fast taking over our capital city! Today I saw a well dressed woman carrying not one but two boxes of super, scrummy, sticky KK doughnuts and yesterday I spotted a business man on the tube carrying another box. Presumably to his loving family or maybe to gobble up all on his own. Not bad considering thye’ve only been on sale here a few weeks.

  16. Kerry Says:

See, I feel pretty much the same way about Lost. I’ve heard it’s a really great show, and I’m sure I could get the first season on DVD and catch up. But really, I’m just too stubborn.

I’ll probably just end up waiting until after it’s cancelled and then sitting down one week and watching the whole thing on DVD in a giant insane marathon. Kind of like I did with Sex and the City.

  17. michelle/weaker vessel Says:

    ***SPOILER ALERT***

You guys, you aren’t going to believe this, but at the end of Titanic…the ship SINKS and everybody DIES. You must see it, because the suspense is just overwhelming.

(Just kidding, I plan to go to my grave having missed out on that particular pillar of Western civilization.)

  18. Tasha Says:

The whole Kelli Pickler thing drove me insane!!! at first I felt bad for her b/c she lives in this rinky dink town…her mom left her when she was 2 and her dad has been in and otut of prison but then she started actually trying to make conversation and it just went down hill from there! I tivoed AI last night not b/c I cared who won but just to see that FINE Christ Daughtry!!! he’s so hot he makes my tv sweat!!!

  19. Tasha Says:

that would be CHRIS Daughtry not Christ!!! LOL…I guess my fingers got excited that we were typing about him!

  20. penguin Says:

I always pride myself in that I barely watch TV- just House and Monk. But I did watch American Idol last night just because I could (and I was kicked off the computer by my cousin). I always hear about good shows but if it’s more than one season into it I refuse to even try to catch up. And I guess I’m the minority here but I liked the Puck/Pickler part.

  21. Lisa Says:

I kind of take pride in the fact that I have never read Moby Dick. This is slightly more amusing when you know I taught high school literature and writing for three years.

    Ummmm!!!! I’m telling!!!

  22. jessica Says:

i watched, or rather tried to watch, Grey’s twice because I loved Sandra Oh when she was on HBO’s “Arliss”. But I have to say, as someone who has watched ER from it’s very first episode…I hate Grey’s. As the French would say, it “le-sucks”, I know - this coming from someone who STILL watches ER!!!! That HAS to mean something, other than I watch crappy TV., and like it

I also managed to miss all the AI hype this year, and I am very proud of myself for breaking the habit.

I have also gone almost 30 years without ever seeing a Star Wars movie and I totally plan to keep it that way, despite my husb’s mad love for the movies.

  23. junkie Says:

If you remember? I held off on cable for years and years specifically b/c I knew that if I had more than one channel? I’d be stuck in front of it for the rest of my life. And what happened? Exactly that! I feel your pain, girl.

  24. ferd Says:

I don’t care what other people watch. I like what I like. What I don’t like is watching people being shamed, calling it reality and using it as an excuse for 15 minutes of commercials for every 30 minutes of airtime.

  25. LauraJ Says:

I don’t watch Tv either!. Mostly Cable. Thankfully I read enough from the internet I’m still in the loop, sort of.

  26. RockStar Mommy Says:

Ok, it’s no secret that I’m a total American Idol junkie - but I never was until this season - I never watched before. If you don’t catch it from the very beginning? It’s worthless. No point in watching. (No real point in watching even if you DO catch it from the beginning - but they just SUCK YOU IN!)

That being said, I take pride in boycotting Gray’s Anatomy also because, come on - what a second rate ER - and I never liked ER to begin with, either.

And also? I saw about 25 minutes of Titanic when it first came on video and I remember hearing the names JACK! and ROSE! spoken no less than 3 million times in those few short minutes and I stopped watching because I was ready to gag - so I take pride in the fact that I’ve also never seen that, too.

I also don’t watch Survivor. (And the crowd gasps in silence!)

  27. Julie Says:

I watch both Grey’s Anatomy and ER and both are so good! I’m the only one of family and friends that watch it so obviously it must not be *that* popular.

I’ve always loved Titanic. My husband won’t watch it though. I’m a sucker for cheesy romance flicks.

As for American Idol, never watched it, what’s the point for me since I can’t tell if they’re any good or bad!

  28. Jezer Says:

I don’t watch Grey’s or ER or Lost or Survivor or any of that–not because I’m all anti-TV or anything, but because I am a big ol’ LAME-O.

However, I DID go out and buy the High School Musical DVD on its release day. But I only knew about it b/c of you. And I didn’t even SEE it until I bought it. Now, I’ve shown it to four different groups of students, and yes, I AM the most beloved teacher in the 4th grade. And I can’t wait to get the DVD home to practice the moves to “Together.”

  29. Venting Mama Says:

The Puck and Pickler parts were too much for me as well so I treated them as though they were commercials and walked away each time. Great “fold laundry” moments.

  30. Gwen Says:

Delurking to say that STUBBORN BITCH lives at my house, too! Please shake Mr. Z’s hand for me - I also intend to die without having seen Titianic, just because.

  31. sistina Says:

I’m in that stubborn bitch club. For me it’s Shrek. After the tenth person asked if I had seen it yet I made a solemn vow to be the last person in the civilized world not to have seen it. I should get t-shirts printed.
When we were hit with a tropical storm (Gaston) a few years ago we were without power for 11 DAYS. We learned we didn’t need TV. We haven’t had cable since. I’m thinking of caving now that I’m home with a 5-month old but I’m trying to hold out as long as possible.

  32. Charlene Says:

I wish I could die saying I’ve never seen Titanic. I hated that movie so much! I remember sitting beside my friends during the last scene with Jack and whatever Kate Winslet’s character’s name was. They were all bawling their eyes out, and it was all I could do not to just scream, “Shut up and die already!” HATE!!!
