I’m being interviewed (on camera!) at BlogHer by Leah Peah for Alpha Mom and I’m so proud of myself for not freaking out about this before. I’m trying to be all cool and “no big deal…it’s only 15 minutes…” about it on the outside, but on the inside? I’m all “ohmigod ohmigod ohmigod” about it. And I don’t really fake coolness well.
Leah sent an email out to all of us being interviewed and it mentioned appropriate colors/clothing that will look good on camera. Pointers: Solids not Patterns. No Black, White, or Red. Jewel tones are good.
Here’s the problem: I have a limited selection of tops since my boobs are a bit bigger now than in my normal life. (Woo!) I haven’t wanted to buy too many new tops since they’ll disappear (the boobs, not the tops) after I’m done nursing, so my selection is minimal. And all of my tops? Are either patterned, black, white, red or workout clothes. So - I set out to buy a nice top on my lunch break. What did I learn? I have no clue what a jewel tone is. I mean, I know some colors that ARE jewel tones: burganday, teal, okay - that’s it. But I’m certain there are others - what are they? Why am I such an idiot?
I ended up getting a solid navy blue top. Is that a jewel tone? If not? Tell me it is so I’ll feel better.
As if buying a new top for an interview I’ll be doing (on camera!) isn’t freaky enough, I also ran into another blogger while I was at Target. Poor Michelle had to listen to me ramble about the mystery of jewel tones for a good 15 minutes. And then? When I was going to my car? Brit called me. I’ve given my cell phone number out to so many people in the last few days (and have I programmed any of theirs in? No, of course not) that I answered it even though I didn’t recognize the area code. It was so weird talking to her - I guess I’d better get used to that. At least she didn’t have to hear my panicked jewel tone confusion. Instead, she got to hear how much of a moron I am as I said, “Um…I just realized, should I take NikkiZ’s car seat?” because if there’s anything I am - it’s prepared.
1) Not so sure about navy being a jewel tone. But WOO for scoring the interview!

Is she still in an infant seat or has she progressed to convertable?
I am sure you know this … but jewel tones are just colors you find on jewels - strong vibrant colors. Think red (ruby), green (emerald), blue (amethyst) - so you did good. They are deep, as opposed to pastel. You are going to be great @ Blogher. Enjoy the trip, try not to go too crazy with both kids in tow, give Amalah a big hug - you will be fine.
If you got NikkiZ a seat on the plane you will most definitely need a car seat..but if you are intending to hold her the whole way (augh) then you could probably do without it. The only place anyone will want to go is out to a bar or a strip club and you can’t take her there anyway! I wish I was near you, I would keep her for you so you could par-tay!
Dude. Dabney totally schooled me in the nature of jewel tones. I was about to leave a comment that said: “Jewel tones are bright colors, like limes and hot pinks and bright turquoises.”
But I’m glad Dabney answered first, because I’m not sure I’ve every seen those colors in natural jewels.
Am not fashion savvy, apparently.
I think navy will work great. I used to work in television and we would occasionally have interviews with people and the patterns on their shirts would cause crazy effects. That’s way distracting.
Is the interview going to be posted online?

Blue (sapphire), Purple (amethyst). Navy is probably will work, but wouldn’t be considered a jewel tone.

Is it dark navy blue? Cause that’s close to black. Or is it a bright navy blue? Cause that’s perfect. A bright blue color is primo for television. “What makes you an expert, Missy?” you may ask? My paycheck. : ) And you will be fine. Just look at Leah and have a conversation with her. I’m pretty sure she won’t have you looking directly at the camera which tends to really freak people out. If she does have you look directly at the camera, don’t look into the lens. You will see your reflection and will be thinking about how you look instead of how you are (intelligently!) answering the questions. I’m not wishing you luck because you won’t need it. Instead, have fun.
