Quantifying my sanity in terms of mugs

004 - My number one coffee cup

When I make my coffee every morning, I open the cabinet to get out a mug. There is a hierarchy of mugs in my cabinet. I look at the mugs available and pick the best one. Of course, the best one is a combination of (a) Prettiness, (b) Size, and (c) The ability to withstand heat. Some of my mugs are cute, but burn my damn hands when I pour coffee into them. Others stay cool, but are too small. Others are the right size, but ugly. And you know? I don’t feel like my day starts well if I’m drinking out of any ugly mug.

(This is where you nod your head and say, “Yep. I knew she was crazy.”)

The number one mug in my cabinet, the one that is perfect in EVERY way, is my Harry Potter mug. I love it so much that I cried when I realized the store I bought it from (this was before I shopped online) was out of them. I love it so much that sometimes, I save it. Like, if I open the cabinet on a Friday and it’s in there, I might not grab it because I want to save it for Saturday because I can enjoy it longer on Saturday.

(See? Told you. KRAZEE.)

Today – my cup was available for use. I decided it would be great to feature in my 365 day photo series. It is proof of several things: 1) I love Harry Potter (like you doubted that) 2) I over analyze my coffee cups and 3) I’m insane.

I don’t think that makes you insane at all. In my house we choose our mugs by whether or not we want to hand wash or put them in the dishwasher. Our favorites are hand wash only, but sometimes we’re just too lazy for that. I guess that proves two things: 1) you’re not alone in the mug craziness thing, and 2) my husband and I can be really freaking lazy sometimes.

  2. Wacky Mommy says:

Right now I’m having coffee out of my second-favorite mug, the one with the dancing hot chili peppers on it. Site looks great!

  3. aly says:

is this an appropriate sequway to ask how you did on your WOMBAT test or not?!?!

ps. where did you get that mug?!?!

pps. i am also weirdly obsessed with HP and yet try to maintain that i’m a fully functioning adult in society. you know, with some other interests.

  4. Susan says:

Actually, I would think you were crazy if you DIDN’T have a hierarchy for coffee mugs. Doesn’t everyone do that??? Or, have I just exposed myself as equally crazy?

  5. Zoot says:

My blog is not emailing me these comments from this entry! My blog hates my coffee cup!

Aly – I got an “Exceeds Expectations” like I did on the first one. How did you do?

  6. aly says:

i got an EE too, just like last time. rock on with our bad selves… :D

your blog is just jealous of the coffee mug. the blog wants some HP love too….

  7. Karen Rani says:

I just got my Blogity Goodness mug from Zazzle and it’s WAY perfect. Before that, my fave was the Breast Cancer Avon mug I got years ago – now I have two faves! (See, I’m just as nuts as you!)

  8. dee says:

I identify more and more with you each day. I do the same exact thing except with cups because I don’t drink coffee and don’t need mugs.

  9. callistawolf says:

Dear, I do the SAME thing with my coffee cups. So not crazy. Unless I’m crazy too.

Speaking of HP… I’ve been meaning to ask (and sorry if you’ve already answered this one), what are your thoughts on Snape? Kile has just reread HBP (and I’m hoping to follow suit) and we were just discussing this and I have to admit, I’m starting to change my mind.

  10. stacey says:

i don’t drink coffee at home. that is insane. i have the cups, the coffee, the coffee maker, i just don’t drink it at home. At work? i have my coffee….out of stryrofoam cup. so so so wrong. i have awesome coffee cups too.

  11. aly says:

change your mind how? i’m thinking snape serves his own interests the best (vs. him being loyal to the order or even to voldermort)…. i also think there will be a harry v snape showdown before the harry v voldermort one. maybe snape actually helps harry in the end? not sure.

  12. Audrey says:

Actually, that was where I nodded my head and said, “Yep. I do the exact same thing.”

  13. Susan says:

I love my “Pete” coffee cup that my father in law bought for me at a flea market. He thought I was weird to want a coffee cup with my dog’s name on it, but he dropped 35 cents on it just to make me happy. My in-laws rock.

The cup features a palm tree and sunset — totally 80s looking Florida vacation junk. So awesome.

  14. Jennifer says:

None of this stuff says “You’re crazy!” You actually have the wonderful ability to put down in writing some of the goofy things we analyze everyday. My favorite is the Starbucks one my son gave me for Mother’s Day and my 2nd is my Thomas Kincade mug mom gave me. The rest fall in line. I will not drink out of my Starbucks too close to Sat. either unless I know the dishwasher will be run before Sat. morning. for the very same reason!!!

  15. irises says:

oh my god – my cabinet also has a hierarchy of mugs! i hate some of our mugs and using them makes me feel weird. also, i hate when my husband brings me some tea in one of the hated mugs. and then i realize i am such a jerk for complaining about the dumb mug, because some people probably have husbands who do not bring them tea.
so i should just shut up and be thankful.
    and i am.

  16. Cagey says:

Me! Too! Darn you!! I wanted to post a whole little thing about my “collection” of mugs (from the Blogging Book). Now I can’t because that would look lame. Anyway…..

Just last week, while the husband was out of the country, I weeded out 2 mugs that I did NOT like and treated myself to a new KU Jayhawk mug that I DO like. Now, we have one less mug cluttering our cabinet and I have a new mug that I LOVE (I tested all of the mugs at the store for proper “sipping fit”). He of course immediately noticed the new mug, but didn’t really understand my logic in the whole matter. Men.

  17. Cara says:

I often handwash my favorite mugs (identical twins) so I can drink out of them. Voluntarily doing dishes. By hand. Before my morning coffee. Even I know that means I’m not crazy – I’m insane.

  18. Heather says:

I definitely have preferences as to what mug I drink out of. At camp this summer, I had one that used so often, and liked so much, that the kitchen ladies sent it home with me. :-)

  19. Katie says:

And 3) you drink your coffee…. crouching…. by the bed (?)

I have the fave mugs too. Sounds like its an epidemic!

  20. kristyk says:

ahhhhh… mugs. Every morning, I make my husband coffee and he takes it with him to work. Every day, he returns home without it. We own close to 40 cups. FORTY. He hasn’t brought them home in a while, so now? I have exactly one. It is a stainless travel mug with a plastic ring around the top. He refuses to use it because he believes that it is impossible to get it truly clean. So, I don’t have much choice right now.

  21. Sonja says:

I really enjoy your particular brand of insanity. I can also completely relate to the mug quality issues. And as far as saving a favorite item for a special day goes, let me just say that I did laundry the night before a job interview just so I could wear the “right” undergarments.

  22. Kimberly says:

I do that with my mugs too. I even bring them to work so I don’t have to drink my fountain soda/water/coffee out of boring paper cups. My coworkers laugh at me. :)

I love Harry Potter. You know, the Costco website has a link you can click on to be notified when the book is available for presell already. It bugs me because I go on the site and see a link for HP#7 and get all excited and then I click on it and go Oh. :)

I LOVE the new design. I think it is my favorite yet.

  23. baseballmom says:

I do that too! And, also? T and I are reading the Harry Potters in order, we’re on the Prisoner of Azkaban, and even though I didn’t think I’d like them? I love them!

  24. samantha says:

I totally do this, too. I remember when Beaux suggested having ALL WHITE MUGS and I nixed that idea very quickly. My all time favorite mug is one I got nearly TEN years ago – it’s blue and has a Monet quote on it. It’s just the perfect mug. How that mug has made it through college and constantly rolling around on my car floor is beyond me.

And I really love the new design, Zoot. So pretty and clean!

Hi. I’m Kim.

This is my blog that I've been writing on since January, 2004. I call myself Zoot as it's a derivative of an old childhood nickname. I used to write about my struggles to have children, but eventually I succeeded and now, I write a lot about those kids. I don't use my kid's exact names simply because if someone Googles their very unique names in the future, I don't want them stumbling upon my entries about boobsweat. I mean, would you hire someone whose Mom writes openly about such topics? NO. YOU WOULD NOT.

I love taking pictures and carry my camera (almost) everywhere I go. This means you'll see a lot of photos on this site. I also periodically post recipes I like as I've been slowly (but surely) learning to cook and I like to share my discoveries. Finally? I'm an annoying pop culture fanatic so I'll periodically ramble about Hunger Games or the latest Parks and Recreation.

I hope you like it here. If not? Please don't tell me. I cry easily.
