Love, love, love LilZ AND his cute date! How do I know she's cute? Of course she is, because clearly LilZ has excellent judgment. I'm thrilled with how those two kids are turning out, and hope that the kids my boys meet at that age are open-minded and such -- so much better than their parents' parents. Times change, but not nearly fast enough.

Hugs and kudos to LilZ! You must be raising him right!

How cute is LilZ! What a great guy! Uh, I'm a Republican but I believe in gay marriage and stuff. Hm, is that an oxymoron? Maybe I should jump ship to the other side!

That's completely hilarious. I, too, am a democrat that believes in "gay marriage and stuff." That's the best label yet! Glad LilZ picked such a fab girl.

My heart goes out to that girl. Being half black and half white myself, let's just say that I was NEVER the right color for my date's parents! I spent 10 years with a (white) man (from the age of 16 to 26) whose parents actually wrote him a letter telling him, "It's not HER FAULT she's black, but you can't be with her" (in retrospect I wish he had taken their "advice...") And, um, this was the late 80s.

Anyway, LilZ rocks - and so do you and MrZ for raising such a fine young man.

I wish I was shocked but, it seems more and more we run into the fact that our generation isn't has groovy as we had hoped....

how crappy that parents have to warn their kids that someone may not like them based on skin color in 2006.

And I totally hope my kid says that I"m cool and believe in gay marriage....

because if he doesn't I"m just going to steal LIlZ

LilZ cracks me up!! I wish he and my daughter could be friends. How great is the girl he went with and how ridiculous that her color was even a thought to some!! We lived in the "south" many years and my daughter learned a lot about racism and she was so funny, she always says "why does it matter what color anyone is?? We all laugh and eat and cry the same". So true.
Anyways, good luck on your half marathon, I am sure you will do awesome like always!! :)

Wow, that is sad. I'm glad your son had a good time and even though I've only been reading for the last month or so, I can't believe he's old enough to go to dances. And thanks to you, I have that jet plane song stuck in my head. :) Have a great weekend.

I volunteer for a reading program at a nearby elementary school, and last week my student and I were reading a book about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as a child. In the story, his friend, Bobby (who was white), was suddenly no longer allowed to play with Martin, and we only got as far as Martin questioning why Bobby couldn't hang out anymore. My student (who is black), said, "Maybe Bobby's just been busy helping his dad at the store."

My heart was breaking, and I was relieved that the next day's mentor would have to be the one to introduce her to the concept of prejudice, not me. How sad this is something we have to teach children.
