One of the many ways I’m a big, fat wuss.
Category: Stuff I hate |

MrZ wanted to rent a movie Saturday night from Comcast On Demand. He asked me what I wanted to see out of the list and I chose several comedies and dramas. However, he really wanted to see The Descent which was a horror/scary/pee-in-your-pants type of movie that both he and LilZ love. I kinda whined, “I don’t wanna see a scary movie,” to which MrZ, the man who I’ve been with for SEVEN YEARS said, “But you LOVE scary movies!”

Um, excuse me? I hate scary movies with every ounce of my soul.

I let him rent the damn movie because I knew I’d fall asleep anyway. And let me tell you, I cried. I’m serious. I cried. It’s about a bunch of stupid women who go into a cave with scary things. It triggered my fears of claustrophobia (Girl. Stuck. In. Cave.), my fear of heights/falling, and my fear of MONSTERS. I left the living room at one point, I was so scared. This was only, like 10 minutes into the movie. It was that bad. MrZ begged me to come back in to watch it with him. Which I did. For another 10 minutes. At that point, I was essentially crying saying, “I don’t want to watch this.” I hid in the bedroom the rest of the night and fell asleep with TLC’s What Not To Wear turned up full blast so that I wouldn’t hear the screaming from the living room.

I HATE SCARY MOVIES.

(Although, I love Stacy and Clinton.)

I don’t know if it’s my vivid imagination, or my propensity to have nightmares, but I do not like being scared. I never watched those scary movies all of my friends did growing up, and I avoid them as an adult. LilZ and MrZ love them, but not me. Nope. Never. I’d rather watch a never-ending rotation of “Flavor Of Love” than even one scary movie. I’ve had bad reactions to the ones I’ve seen (Don’t ask me about Blair Witch. SERIOUSLY.) so why would I want to see any more? I wouldn’t. That’s why. Because I’m scared. Of everything.

MrZ swears I left the movie after the scarriest parts and the rest was just gore (which I don’t mind so much) - but still. I’ll have nightmares about the parts I did see for the next few weeks. Which means I’ll spend the next few weeks renting every romantic comedy and kids movie that has been released in the last year. That’s the only cure, you know.

Oh my God, you’d rather watch Flavor of Love? Now THAT is desperation! What about watching I Love New York?

“But you LOVE scary movies!” Ha. MEN.

  2. Flybunny Says:

I am with you on this one. I had nightmares once from watching the preview for Return of the Dead in which the zombies run, yes they run not just walk all stiff like and it scared the bejeebers out of me and this was just a few years ago.

  3. Simba's Mom Says:

I am the complete opposite. I love to be scared. My husband will go see scary movies with me, but spends most of the time with one hand over his eyes. I will admit that the Descent was especially scary and still creeps me out, so that was a whopper for you to try to watch.

  4. dana Says:

I don’t hate scary movies per say….I can handle certain ones. Others, I’m a big scaredy cat about.

You’re not a wuss, because if you are, than I am too!

  5. Janet Says:

My friend, Krista, who LOVES scary movies, saw the Descent recently and put it in her Top 5 Scariest movies! So I KNOW it’s gotta be scary cause that girl has some tolerance!

  6. Jenny H. Says:

I HATE SCARY MOVIES! I totally have nightmares too. I need to have a nightlight. And I am almost 33 y.o.! I have always had a vivid imagination and have ALWAYS hated scary movies. It took me three tries to watch “The Ring” and that was with THREE GROWN MEN!! I am still a little freaked out by , to be honest.

I love Stacy and Clinton too!! And that was the perfect thing to take your mind off of the scariness!! I usually watch “Sleeping Beauty”. It is my favorite cartoon movie. Works everytime!

  7. Sarah Lena Says:

“The Descent” was scary in a psychological way, and those are always the kind that get to me. But I love them.. I’m probably one of twenty people nationwide who actually saw “The Hills Have Eyes” in the theatre.

Last night, we watched “Saw III”. And while I usually eat up gore and scariness, this one almost made me wretch.

But then again, I also loved “Flavor of Love”.

  8. Audrey Says:

When I watched The Descent I was so freaked out that I had to turn on all the lights in the house to make sure there was nothing lurking in the dark. When I went to bed that night, I was only able to get to sleep after I’d gotten up out of bed and closed the closet doors, because who says cave monsters can’t lurk in closets?

  9. Maria Says:

I fall asleep with the TV on every night. I have insomnia and the little I do sleep is very light. I noticed that I have nightmares when scary movies or shows like F/X come on even though I’m semi asleep.

  10. Fraulein N Says:

Oh, man. I hate when people just don’t get that yes, it really is “THAT scary.” I’m so bad I’ve even developed the ability to block out ads for scary movies. La la la, not listening…

After I watched “The Sixth Sense” (another one I was assured “wasn’t THAT scary”) I slept with my back to the wall for, oh, about a month. I am Queen of the Wusses.

  11. One Smart Cookie Says:

I so hear you on the scary movies! Hate!

I think that scary movies are kind of like spicy food - some people just don’t taste the spicyness so it is no big deal to them, and they just can’t recognize that to other people it is REALLY spicy. People who love scary movies just can’t recognize how scary they are to those of us who HATE them.

  12. Sam Says:

EEEEP! I don’t like scary movies, either. I can handle thrillers, but these creepy gore fests where the commercials freak me out? NO WAY. And my husband knows better than to even ask. There was a Ghost Hunters marathon yesterday - and I do love that show, and barely ever get very scared. However, I wouldn’t want to be alone in the house after watching five or six episodes in a row. Also, prison ghosts? And the stories that go along with them? Very frightening.

  13. Leah Says:

I hate scary movies too and I fucking hate more people who trick me into watching scary movies. Like, hate and want to kick in the balls. You should do that next time someone tries to get you to watch a scary movie.

I still have bad dreams about Jurassic Park which I saw in 8th grade. I am 27.

  14. heels Says:

I used to be able to more-or-less take scary movies, but, since having my son, I can’t handle a second of them. Not even PREVIEWS. My husband rented The Descent the other night and tried to tell me it was a “mystery/thriller.” I love mysteries. You know how you can sometimes get an impression about a movie based on the previews they show? Well, I watched the awful, scary previews and said to him “Is this a scary movie?” He said “Well, these women go down into a cave and then bad things happen.” To which I responded “You ASS- you know I’m claustrophobic AND can’t watch scary stuff! What did you rent this movie for?” Y’know what he said? “‘Cause it got decent reviews.”

    ASS.

We did NOT watch that movie.

  15. ferd Says:

I hate scary movies too. Real life is bad enough.

  16. mar Says:

    Right there with ya!

I can’t even watch America’s Most Wanted because I am sure all the people they are looking for are watching me through my window watching them on t.v.

  17. Kanigget Says:

My friends took me to see The Descent in theaters for my birthday. I personally love scary movies and thought it was the best gift ever. My friends curled up into balls on their seats and covered their eyes and cried. I’m told periodically that I still owe them…big time.

  18. ben Says:

I loved Descent, but if you don’t love scary movies, this was NOT a good one to watch.

My wife hates scary movies, too, so I’m used to watching them alone and no, I’d NEVER beg her to watch one.

  19. Pamalamadingdong Says:

HATE scary movies…hate it when i let chris pick the movie to rent and he comes home with something scary.
i go to bed with my laptop and relax

  20. paige Says:

I am totally with you on the scary movies. No can do, no siree bob. Somehow my best friend talked me into going to the theater to see the remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I was thinking cheesy gore, bad acting, etc. I left about 20 minutes into the movie, right after he hung that one poor guy up on the meat hook.

Ugh. I’m getting scared just thinking about it. I wish my husband would get home from work SOON!

  21. tiffany Says:

    i hate scary movies, too.
    HATE!!!!!!

  22. Rachel Says:

Oh, that was a bad movie and I’ll tell you that the movie only gets worse. He had to have been joking.

  23. Karen Says:

The best way to watch a scary movie is with your fingers in your ears. It is not the dialog or images that actually scare people generally. It’s the music and the build up to the sudden jump that scares them. You will actually be less scared if you watched the whole movie on mute with subtitles. I’ve tried it. It’s so true!

But What Not to Wear works too. Although, some of those “before” outfits are scary.

  24. Holly Says:

i lurk, but i come out at the mention of what not to wear, becuase i love stacy and clinton with my very heart of hearts, the only person i could possibly love more is nick arrojo who is a hair god. I am aware that my love for this perhaps makes me a shallow person, but i’m willing to live with that..

you crack me up, your husband truely is hot, and you may have the cutest kids humanly possible..

    Holly

  25. Meg Says:

I made it through The Descent with only one little yelp. Spence came home with Saw III last night and I spent 15 minutes with the hood of my hoodie up, my face buried in the corner of the couch, my fingers in my ear singing nursery rhymes with Spencer hiding behind me. FIFTEEN MINUTES. I love scary movies, I hate that one.

  26. alektra Says:

I love/hate scary movies. Snakes on a Plane is scary to me, ok? But I loved that one…

BTW - The Bar? Which decides a good chunk of my life? Is four days AFTER HPatDH comes out!! How can they DO this to me?

  27. Jenny H. Says:

Holy crap, I totally forgot to mention my “mad killer theory”… which means that my paranoid ass has to check EVERY closet, underneath all beds, and behind every general area until I can go to bed.

Yes, this provides much amusement for my husband on a daily basis!!

  28. Katie (The Yap) Says:

Oh god. Blair Witch. You just HAD to go and bring that one up. Now I’m trembling over here!! I’m with you on the hating of the scary movies. Why the HELL do people like that at all?

  29. Rachael Says:

Scary movies are teh suck. Although I don’t like them because they’re all just so STUPID. I only watch Stephen King movies because, duh, it’s Stephen King. But I draw the line there. And it is a big, fat, black permanent marker line.

  30. Jules Says:

I HATE Scary movies too. I end up having stupid nightmares and can’t sleep when I am home alone. As lame as this is–I even had a nightmare about the goblin from Ernest Scared Stupid when I was 10. I also had to sleep in my brothers room for about a week after I saw “I know what you did last summer” That guy was totally waiting in my closet to cut my hair off–no thank you!

  31. Eliza Says:

We rented The Descent from DirecTV on Saturday. I took a nap because we all know I don’t like that kind of movie.

One of my biggest dreams/darkest fears is that my family will sign me up for What Not to Wear. Oh the humiliation! Oh the $5000 makeover!

  32. carrisablog Says:

Zoot I just watched this movie on Friday night… but not on tv… I went to a friends house where they have an ACTUAL MOVIE THEATRE in their house. So it was a ginormous screen with surround sound and lets just say that we all screamed like girls… even the guys! I did NOT like that movie.

  33. Kelly Says:

I STILL have nightmares about Alien. The FIRST Alien. From like 20 years ago.

When I’ve been to Disney MGM and go on the Great Movie ride, I have to close my eyes and hunch down for the Alien part.

  34. Tara Says:

I love scary movies–we just got The Descent from Netflix last weekend, and I really enjoyed it.

But I’ll admit, I was checking for “crawlers” everywhere in the house after that, even after watching the special features where they showed the (damn fine) actors before they were transformed into crawlers.

Saw III is next in our queue–after seeing some comments about it here, I can’t wait!

  35. Lilymane Says:

I hate scary movies! (And, um, Poltergeist scared me.)
I love the Colts! Go Peyton!
I have put the Sharpies in time out and fined my kids for “ruining” their shoes/jeans/binders (while hiding the pictures of me at 14 with grafitti ALL OVER my uniform saddle oxfords.)
I feel like I should read your blog more often to see what I’m going to do next! :D
    Peace.

  36. Bethiclaus Says:

What is up with all the Boogie Man movies that are out nowadays? (Oh, look! I’m old and crotchity, too!) I had hoped they were gone, but now every movie is about some damn undead something or other. Ew.

Although, I’m not a good judge. I had nightmares for an entire week after an episode of House.

  37. Lisa (the Girls' Moma) Says:

I totally cried myself to sleep a few years ago after my husband dragged me to the theater to see Blade. And it wasn’t even that scary, I just don’t like blood coming from the ceiling! So I totally understand.

  38. Michele Says:

I’m usually okay with scary movies… Like them in fact - especially suspenseful or ghosty. However. I too have a vivid imagination. Blair Witch? Did me in. I think it was 3 days before I’d go pee in the dark by myself. My husband had to come with me until the light was on. I’ve never had a movie scare me like that, and I haven’t seen it since.
