Category: Stuff I hate |

Guess what MrZ is having to do as we speak? Pick up the kids from school early because every school in the area is shutting down for the threat of severe weather/tornadoes. Looks like we may be spending family time in the bathroom tonight. (For those of you tornado-novices, if you don’t have a basement, you hide in the most interior room in your house. Which is LilZ’s bathroom in our case.) I’m in Huntsville in the map below, the red is the devil riding in on waves of tornadoes and hail. Or maybe it’s just heavy rain. I don’t know. I failed meteorology.

Have I ever mentioned how much I truly hate tornadoes? Yeah. Well. I do.

Red is BAD.

Edited to add: We’re all fine here. Barely got bad. All of the tragedy happened further south from where we live. Keep those families in your thoughts.

You know, I started reading your blog last spring around the time that you were hiding from tornadoes in a bathroom and if I remember correctly LilZ was having friends over. Is it really time for this again already?

  2. Jenn Says:

Oh, and I forgot to say “Stay safe,” but you know that, right? :)

  3. s@m Says:

Ugh. I don’t envy you. Stay safe!

We’re in the midst of freezing rain warnings with ice pellets, snow and whatever else it feels like doing. The weather is so f’d now it’s like that movie - Day After Tomorrow (or something)..I’m just waiting for everything to freeze over and then the wolves will come out.

I lived in an apartment building while we were under a tornado watch in Toronto!! I wasn’t sure what to do, so I called a neighbour to find out where I should go (read: hide).

  4. cagey Says:

I feel ya. We just had thunderstorms, hail, and tornado watch/warnings roll through all last night. Bleh. Today we have SNOW FLURRIES, I kid you not.

Keep us posted and hang in there.

  5. Charlene Says:

    Zoot,

We went through what you are getting this morning. Nothing like being hunkered down in an office lunchroom with your co-workers wondering when the all clear would be issued and can you call the sitter to check on the boy. the weather is 65 and beautiful as of now. then by the time I roll out of my office at 4.30 it is suppose to be in the 40’s. I hate spring also. Hang tight.

  6. Randi Says:

Yikes! I won’t complain about snow storms anymore! Stay safe!

  7. One Smart Cookie Says:

Oh! Scary! I hope that your family stays safe and that you find something to entertain yourselves during your hideout.

  8. Ginger Says:

Stay safe ! I had to do that once and I was living alone at the time, miles away from my friends and family and it was the scariest time ever.

  9. Nancy Says:

Oooh, I remember hiding in the bathroom when I lived in Kansas. Stay safe!

  10. Tina Says:

I grew up in the south, and we NEVER had an early dismisal for storms/tornados! Your situation almost makes me feel bad for laughing at a student here in Indiana when she asked if we’d get out early because of storms (I told her she’d probably be safer in the school then driving him). Almost. But she was a real airhead so I didn’t take her too seriously. I do hope you all stay safe. Our radar is starting to show red, but nothing like yours!

  11. Jamie Says:

I am in Nashville and they are doing the same thing. But our daycare just said to come as early as we can.

    UGH!

I wish we had a basement.

  12. callistawolf Says:

If red is bad, I imagine purple is worse and I spot a smidge of purple there.

Stay safe, Zoot Family. I hate those darned tornadoes too, and I don’t even live in tornado country.

  13. Liv Says:

That system passed over us this morning and it really wasn’t that bad here. We are about an hour east of Mobile. Hopefully it will breeze over you quickly as it seems to be moving fast. Too bad you can’t fill the tub with gin.

  14. Susan Says:

Just wanted to add mine to the stay safe wishes. Will be thinking of you!

  15. Rachel Says:

We lived in Little Rock Arkansas for 3 years and the weather was always scary. You are kind of in the same plane as LR and I imagine that they are similar. The first year we were there we had a tornado that hit a couple of miles away from the mall I was working in. They advised us to go out into the open walking area of the mall with the open windows above. CRAZY!

  16. snakeepoo Says:

Yep! Looks like spring time tornado season is coming early!

I remember when I was LilZ’s age in Dallas, TX sitting in a hallway of the school wearing our most sturdy textbooks as hats! Pretty scary! The ol’ duck and cover drill!

Y’all be really careful down there!!

  17. SouthernMom Says:

Our school system was called out all day today…and so far there have been no storms, not even a sprinkle. I imagine it will hit around 2 or 3. If it’s bad I’ll let you know, because you’re sure to get the same thing that comes through my area.
Oh, and you know what sucks? The inner most room in my house is a bathroom as well, and it happens to be the one smell I can NOT tolerate this pregnancy. I guess either I’ll vomit or we’ll be carried away because we set up camp in a “less safe” area of the house.

  18. Nienuh Says:

Wow, no tornados in the Netherlands, so absolutely no experience. I will try to remember the “most interior room of the house thing” with the global warming issue and all.

    For now, stay SAFE!

  19. Jenny H. Says:

I live in Georgia, about 30 minutes from the state line. Off of I-20. We are getting the storm now. No sirens as of yet, but still under a tornado watch until 9 pm tonight.

So we are just waiting and watching the news. Y’all stay safe.

  20. Shala Says:

Stay safe! It’s that time of year here as well!!

  21. junkie Says:

does it help that we all had delayed school/work times today b/c of ice and snow? :)

  22. Tara Says:

So much for getting Lil z to school on time.

    Stay safe.

  23. April Says:

Yeah, I was in a tornado when I was ten, and to this day big thunderstorms scare the living hell out of me. We’re lucky we were not at home at the time, as our entire neighborhood was wiped from the planet.

I am convinced that if I am ever again in another tornado that I will certainly die. So I am a nutcase when it comes to storms. Luckily, the lakefront in Chicago discourages them… the best reason for me to never become a suburbanite and move away from the lake.

  24. jayne Says:

Hope you are all ok. Here in RI they are reporting that a tornado hit a school in Alabama but not giving any more news….update soon!

  25. Cathy Says:

The news reports sound horrible. Please be safe.

  26. callistawolf Says:

Dearest, I just saw the radar over Huntsville and I’m worried about you guys. Doesn’t look good, lots of the red stuff. Update when you can, okay?

  27. Shala Says:

Yes please update when you can!

  28. kell Says:

Please update when you can - saw a lot of devastation in Alabama - prayers and good thoughts with you all !

  29. Katie Says:

Hope you and family are safe and sound - my thoughts are with you.

  30. Meagan Says:

I just saw a headline that said several people were killed by tornadoes in Alabama. I immediately thought of you, and came over to check things out.

I hope you and your family are safe and sound.

  31. SJ Says:

Here’s to hoping that The Zoot family stays safe and out of harms way. Mother Nature is one scary lady and well, my thoughts are with you all…..

  32. snakeepoo Says:

Thanks for updating! I read and commented earlier and then saw the report on CNN at the gym. Wasn’t sure exactly where Enterprise was in relation to Huntsville so I was a little concerned about you guys!

    Glad y’all are okay!!

  33. callistawolf Says:

Thanks for the update. And what a turd am I that I didn’t scroll down to see the “edited” part and just kept hitting refresh, hoping for a new post? Durr… Glad you’re safe. :)

  34. Silly Says:

Glad y’all are OK, tornados are scary stuff. Like sharks, but with different theme music.

  35. Katie (The Yap) Says:

I heard about the horrible tragedies on the news and I thought, “I don’t know anyone in Alabama.” Then, my next thought was, “OH NO! Miss ZOOT! I hope they’re okay!” I am glad you are, but my prayers are with the other people who weren’t so lucky. Very scary!

  36. Maria Says:

Glad to hear you are all okay.

  37. Bonnie Says:

The only tornado I ever experienced was when I was less than 6-months old so I don’t remember it. My mom and older sisters tell me that the houses all around ours were hit but the tornado skipped over our block. That’s when my parents decided that tornadoes are way worse than blizzards and moved the family back north.

You see … with snowstorms you can plan. We got our paychecks a day sooner and then let out of work early so we could go grocery shopping. I picked up gas for the snowblower, propane for the grill, and lots of comfort food. I didn’t forget the beer. If the wind knocks the power out, we can keep it chilled in a snowbank.

  38. jomama Says:

I was just watching the news when they covered the tornado in Alabama and I immediately thought of you. I hope your family is safe.

  39. stacey Says:

I am glad you guys are safe!! After that tornado went through our neighborhood a few weeks ago we have been trying to find a good place to hunkerdown in….I really don’t have a good interior room. Not that it mattered, we don’t have sirens in the city… We had watches all day yesterday and it barely rained! We are getting a bit punchy here now. My prayers are going to all those that were affected yesterday.

  40. Kelly Says:

I DO NOT miss living in Alabama. For this very reason. I lived in Montgomery for a time when I was in 4th-7th grades. The fear of tornadoes still haunts me as an adult.

    Glad you all are okay!

  41. Elizabeth Says:

I saw the storms on CNN and thought of you-glad you are all safe!

  42. Dirka Says:

So glad that everyone is okay! I didn’t realize that you’re in Huntsville. That’s where my boyfriend’s brother lives! It’s a small, small world.

  43. Isabel Says:

Glad you guys are okay. My little family will pray for those who aren’t so lucky…

  44. s@m Says:

I hope everything’s alright down there. I heard it got pretty bad yesterday.

    You’re in my thoughts!

  45. nonsoccermom Says:

Very glad you are okay. I feel so awful for all those families in Enterprise…

  46. Kathy Says:

Glad you made it through all right. I thought about you and your family all day yesterday. Then I just realized I have a cousin in Alabama down on the Georgia border, so my next task is to send email and ask how they are.

  47. Kyra Says:

OMG, I wish that Oklahoma would shut down for the threat of severe weather. I don’t think that we’ve ever had that here…But maybe that is because the scariest of our storms (May 3, 1999, et al) happened at night..Hm.

  48. CPA Mom Says:

So I’m JUST getting caught up with you (Damn Tax Season). I’m so glad you are o.k. I didn’t think about you living in Alabama, so I just checked on Mrs. CPA.

It was my cousin’s daughter who died from the tornado in Missouri. The tornado set down first, right next door to my sister’s house. So yeah, I hate/fear tornados too.
