Soon after MrZ and I started dating, he decided he’d buy us a washer and dryer since together we were spending quite a chunk o’ change at the laundromat every weekend. We went to Sears and walked in with one intention: Buy The Cheapest. Keep in mind - we were quite young - and even younger looking. We found the cheapest washing machine and the cheapest dryer. They did not match and were not even the same brand. They were simply the cheapest. And that was what we wanted. We grabbed a salesperson and said, “We want these.”
He proceeded then to try to convince us that we needed to buy a matching set. Like, somehow clothes washed in a Maytag could not EVER be dried in a Kenmore. Or some such nonsense. It was almost as though he pitied us. Like, poor kids, don’t know any better. I’ll share my wisdom with them.
Of course we were poor, yes, but stupid, no. We knew we just wanted the cheapest thing they had and we were fairly certain we didn’t need the damn things to match. We finally convinced him to sell them to us. This was in 2000. We are still using the same set today. We’ve not had one problem out of either of them, much less any problems with the fact that they don’t match. Not only does one brand dry the clothes of the other - but no one has even looked at us funny when they see our laundry room! No one scoffs at our mismatched washer and dryer! Or at least, not to our faces…
(Anyone want to place bets on one of them dying now that I wrote an entry about how they both still work?)

Way off subject, but did you (I am guessing yes) you can “pre-buy” a copy of Harry Potter at Target now?
I noticed it this morning, you pay $10.00 now and then they apply that to the cost of the book when it comes in and you are guaranteed a copy.
Just wanted to let you know.
I think that appliances conspire to break at the same time. I think that our cars do the same thing. When one of them breaks, I start looking suspiciously at the other one, just waiting to see what’s going to fall off of it.
I had that same thought when I read that sentence. Like, “geez, I hope Zoot knocked on some wood after typing that …”
Good luck with appliance shopping. I always hate that, too, but just because appliances are freaking expensive! ouch!
My washer/dryer set looks to be from 1980, does not match at all, and was purchased from the roommate of a (now ex) boyfriend.
The day we broke up, I was convinced it was going to burst into flames.
So far, at 2 years later, its still trudging along.
Ha! We just bought a HE washer because our old washer died and my husband is trying to convince me that we now need the HE dryer because the machines MUST match. Aahh N-O!
What is it with appliance salesmen? My Fiance and I just moved into our first home and the person at Sear’s tried to do the same thing to us! Good thing we kept to our guns! Cheaper is better!
That’s weird. We bought a matching set because that’s what came with the house (instead of just upgrading the washing machine, which would have made more sense). My parents always had mismatched sets, so I am not sure why I never thought of that!
Appliance sales people are a whole different breed of people!
My husband and I just bought a new washer and dryer (okay, my parents bought them for us as a Christmas gift) and we did not buy a matching set. They are two completely different brands. And you know what, they are fine. And we also had a salesperson look at us in disbelief. But we are very satisfied.
BTW, good luck with the marathon. I’m here in Nashville and I’ll be rooting for you from the east side of the river!
When I moved into my very first apartment I went and bought the cheapest washer and dryer that I could find. They worked fine for me for at least three years, and have been doing the wash for a family of four, with no problems, since I gave them away two years ago. However, my husband and I just finished having a new house built and a new LG HE washer and dryer were delivered yesterday ïŠ My how things have changed in the last five years! BTW, we also had to purchase a couple other appliances and got the best service, and the best price for what we wanted, from Home Depot, so you may want to check them out.
Unfortunately, I have a husband who insists that appliances “match”. I’m the one who researches and says look! Brand x washer - superior, brand y dryer - also superior, but not match-y. He won’t hear of it. We have to have a matching set. It’s infuriating (and expensive)!
If my husband read this post, he would totally fall in love with you. Just letting you know that some men very much appreciate a gal who goes for mismatched (and cheap)!
We are still using the $35 washer and $40 dryer (mismatched) that we bought at two separate garage sales ten years ago. Never had a single problem with either. Now if only our cars would treat us that well.
I am thinking that yes, you will need to replace one or both now. That is just how the boat rocks sometimes!
****Hey totally off subject but I wanted to wish you lots of luck and hope the running gods are nice to you on Saturday. My life is about to get insane and I may miss the chance!! Have FUN!!! You will suprise yourself…I just know it!!****
Yeah, the jinxing thing scares me a little…I told someone that we had never been to the emergency room with either kid for stitches, broken bones, etc. and a week later, one kid had to get stitches. Two weeks after that? The other kid got stitches in the same spot! Yikes. OMG, we are so excited about the new Harry book at our house! We started reading them last year, and even tho’ I never thought I’d like them (I’m just not into stuff like that) I sometimes read the latest one by myself while my son is at school…and don’t tell him!
