Modern Technology
LilZ has an award presentation thingy today that I told him I couldn’t go to because I was already a wee behind at work. This worked out fine because he made me feel really guilty about it so I told him he could download a ringtone to make him not hate me anymore. I’ve always believed good parenting is about compromise, you know.
But let me tell you, the whole “ringtone” thing is new to me because we just completed our “New Every Two” program and were able to upgrade our cell phones. The new ones have that ringtone technology and it has totally taken over my life. I’m obsessed with finding the perfect ringtones for people. MrZ’s is a Crimson Tide fight song, of course (Yeah Alabama) while LilZ’s is “Cupid’s Chokehold” because that is currently his favorite song. I finally decided on “Push It” by Salt-n-Peppa for one friend and a Janis Joplin song for another. I so look forward to people calling now, it’s not even funny. The first several times my phone rang a special tone I felt the need to announce to everyone, “I did that! I programmed it to do that all by myself!” Because, you know, that’s totally new technology no one is taking advantage of but me.
What are you favorite ring tones? I’d kinda like some more old school stuff, like maybe some old hair band stuff? What do you think? Or maybe some good TV theme songs? I’m out of control over here, people. Someone must stop me.

Elvis Costello’s “Watching the Detectives” is currently my default ringtone, though I went a little crazy with downloading new ones that I’m requiring myself to only use one at a time for at least a week before I get sick of it.
Few years ago, my mother got really jealous of my law & order ring tone, so I set hers to the same one. Couple of months ago, my dad asked me to set one for him and I liked his so much I set mine to match. Now we both play the opening strains of “Bab O’Reilly” by The Who. In the past, I’ve used Sesame Street for the mother of my favorite toddler pal, the freaky start of “Crazy Train” (with the “ALL ABOARD HAHAHAHAHA”) for a friend who had the unfortunate habit of drunk dialing me at 3am and yanking me out of sleep to Ozzy Osbourne, Elvis’s “Burnin’ Love” and “Captain Jack” by Billy Joel along with god knows how many others. It’s a sickness.
I am a nerd like that and have PLENTY of songs on my phone for everyone.
Right now I have:
1. the Oregon State fight song (for my other OSU alumni)
2. How to Save a Life – The Fray (for my close friends, since they save my life)
3. Not Ready to Make Nice – The Dixie Chicks (ex-husband’s ringtone!)
4. Sexy Back – Justin Timberlake (for my friends who bring sexy back)
5. Black Horse & a Chery Tree – KT Tunstall (becasue it’s one of my favorite songs for 2006/2007) and
6. Far Away – Nickleback (for those far-away friends).
I used to have Ding Dong the Witch is Dead for people I didn’t really want to talk to … and for my mom because she thought it was hilarious.
Haha welcome to the crazy world of ringtones! My hubby has the A-Team theme song for his usual one and Back in Black for when his brother calls (not sure why) I have “Low rider” for my ring tone and when my hubby calls it is sexual healing. Happy downloading!
My phone will do these ring tones…but I’ve never even looked into them. Where do you find them?? Do you have to pay for them??
I’ve had some fun ones. The past 3 have been:
Yackety Sax (Theme from Benny Hill)
Mr. Brightside
and Finally
Thriller
And my ringtone on my hubby’s phone is “Baby got Back”
Still pissed at him for that……
Forgot to add, a woman in the Post Office the other day had “Cheeseburger in Paradise”
The hell?
I used to love my X-Files ring tone, but lost it with my second to last new phone. Then, I loved my 24 CTU ring tone, but, same thing. Now, I just want a normal ring, but apparently Verizon doesn’t make those anymore. I’m s.o.l.
Thank you Sarah for proving to me that I’m not the only one who has the Dixie Chicks “Not Ready To Make Nice” as my ringtone.
I guess the difference is that other than a few Christmas songs, and “Who Says You Can’t Go Home” by Jennifer Nettles & Bon Jovi – for my parents… every other call is Dixie Chicks.
Mine isn’t for an ex… its a sheer statement to everyone who hears my phone… 2008 can’t get here quick enough.
My husband, the former law enforcement officer, uses the them from “Cops” (Bad Boys by Inner Circle). I use “Margaritaville” because I”m a hopeless parrothead, and my teenager uses “Back in Black” because she thinks AC/DC is a great new band. Silly girl.
Ringtones are addictive. My phone is full. I cannot add anymore. It’s killing me, softly. With his riiiiiiiiing………
I hate to admit this but……I have Fraggle Rock on my phone it that is what I hear when the kids or someone from home calls.
I also downloaded Girlfriend By Avirl L.
Being the tru southern that I am I also have Larry the Cable Guy and Sweet Home Alabama even though I live in the panhandle of Florida which we call LA…for Lower Alabama.
I think I am now rambling.
I can never decide which ones to buy! When I first got my new phone, I bought “Sexyback”. I’ve bought some other ones, but that one probably my favorite.
For my boyfriend (CB), who is a HUGE Guns N Roses fan, I’ve got “Sweet Child O’ Mine” which is sometimes interchanged with “Nightrain” or “Patience,” depending on my mood and opinion of him.
For my best friend, I’ve got a little James Taylor/Carol King “You’ve Got a Friend.”
My phone isn’t cool and my ring is very boring – but my best friend has the Harry Potter theme and it is awesome!
I had 2 ringtones perfectly downloaded for people before I saw Verizon was secretly charging everyone double ($2.99 for the ringtone and another $2 for a “premium download” charge). I have a hard time spending $5 a pop for that stuff.
However, my 2 sweet ringtones are:
1. This is why I’m hot (by the Mimz) for my mom
2. Criminal by Fiona Apple for my boss (he thinks it’s hilarious by the way)
I HEART RINGTONES. And answer tones.
When Baby Daddy #2 calls, it’s “Ain’t No Other Man” by Christina Aguilera.
When everybody else calls? it’s “Big Girls Don’t Cry” by Fergie.
When you call me? You hear “Margaritaville” by Jimmy Buffet OR “Makes Me Wonder” by Maroon 5 depending on what time of day it is.
AWESOME!
My all-time favorite was the theme to the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. I like to think it brought a smile to people’s faces! The Hawaii Five-O theme was a good one too!
my phone always rings Margaritaville – but I’m thinking of adding Bitch as the new one……
I have “The Folsom Prison Blues” by Johnny Cash as my ringtone for my husband (he suggested it since, “marriage is like prison”, and yes, he’s incredibly sweet, why do you ask?). “Feel Good Inc.” by the Gorillas as my main ringtone, which is awesome because the beginning of the song is an evil-sounding laugh and I have managed to scare no less than 5 people just by someone calling my phone. I heart fun ringtones.
hilarious! i have too many on my phone to even list, girl!
The gems on previous phones (before I upgraded):
Fraggle Rock theme, Bewitched theme, Cops theme, Big Pimpin’ (for my dad), Hail to the Chief
my hubby and our home phone have our wedding song as the ring-tone, then I have a few Blondie songs – tide is high and Heart of glass for some family and friends and David Bowie’s China Girl as my default, because I love that song, and Under Pressure is on there too, I play that one when i get tired of China Girl. For each of my close friends, I have their fave songs – Bron to Run, I touch Myself, and Laid. I lveo ringtones. My husb’s hone will play music to you when you call – I don’t like that as much though, I like to hear the songs, I’m selfish that way.
OPERATION DISTRACT ZOOT. got it. um, so my husband informs me that we are the only people in america and possibly the PLANET who still have a two step tv…you know step one push power, step two choose station.
I was at my friends house and I turned the tv off but the sound? it was still everywhere, I couldn’t make it stop. There were to many rectangular boxes with power buttons.
it was a mess by the time I left. I”m pretty sure we’re still friends….I think
Love ringtones! Currently, I have “Here Comes Carolina” as mine. It’s the UNC fight song. A couple of other favorites are “Walk the Line” by Johnny Cash and the theme to the Fairly OddParents. It’s addicting!
Mostly I just have a few that were my favorite songs at the time I bought them. But I have “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” by the Rolling Stones for my mom. Heehee.
My ringtone on my phone is “Oh, Sherry” for the obvious. Copied this off my bff, her name is Sally and she has “Mustang Sally” as hers.
Okay. I’m a total doofus but I have the theme song from Law & Order….since I’m an attorney….which just makes me an even bigger doofus.
Some favorites…
AC/DC’s Back in Black
The Facts of Life theme song
Law and Order: SVU theme song (my current default)
The Muppet Show theme song
Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy
The danger of having SVU as my default (Floyd – ME TOO! Not an attorney, but total doofus!!!) is that the other day when I was sleeping off my night shift with the TV on, when SVU came on USA, I was groping around for my phone and tried to answer it before opening my eyes (Hello? Hello?). There was no one there…it was just time to turn off the TV.
Zoot! I have Sweet Home Alabama as my regular ring tone and for my DH its Lets get in on, which can be embarrassing at times
I, too, am totally addicted to ring tones! Mine current ones are:
Home (Daughtry)-for home (duh)
Veritgo for hubby (big U2 fan)
Working for the Weekend for work
The Best Day Ever (spongebob) for caller ID calls
Theme from Hawaii 5-0 for my parents
We are Family for other relatives
1985 (BFS) for my best friend from HS
I think I am due an update.
Great blog! I read you every day but am a shy lurker–except for today, of course.
Love doing the ring tones.
I have “Sexy Back” for my husband (hee!) but he’s the only special one I’ve set so far. I have this need to find the PERFECT song for each person?
Hey, what’s “your song” so I can use that for yours?
I thought about putting “Why don’t we get drunk (and screw)” on my wife’s phone, but chickened out and settled for “looking for a job” by Todd Snider. She only hears it when I call…
Mine plays Brown Eyed Girl when she calls, and some cosmic sounding weirdness when my parents call, and some other nonsense.
I gotta get with you kids and get more tones, I think.
I’m such a dorky toss back of the 80′s mom… a Madonna song, current none the less… Hung Up that goes “Ring Ring goes the telephone…” and a few other lines from the song.
Because of who it is, what it is and the amount of calls I get from my outside work – most of the time it’s on vibrate so it doesn’t bother people at my day time work.
If my husband, sister, or mom calls me then my phone will play Vultures by John Mayer. If my BFF calls me it plays Crazy Bitch by Buckcherry. And then depending on who you are it plays You Know I’m No Good by Amy Winehouse or Rock the Casbah by The Clash.
Sad how addictive shopping ringtones can be huh?? Right now mine is “Sweet Home Alabama” but past ones include: Sexyback, Walk this Way, We Are The Champions (after running the half-marathon; how dorky is that??), plus songs by Rob Thomas, etc. The best one was the Sexyback when somebody called me while I was in church. The minister is in the middle of his sermon when suddenly you hear “Dirty babe…..you see these shackles baby I’m your slave…I’ll let you whip me if I misbehave…….it’s just that no one makes me feel this way….” Oopsie!!!
On one of my phones, I programmed in the Harry Potter theme with the composer thing, and thats my ringtone – my message tone is part of my favourite Motley Crue song.
With my newer phone, the ringtone alternates between Britney Spears – Toxic (which has gotten kinda embarassing because no one knows I ironically love Britney) and Europe – The Final Countdown, although I keep planning on putting the Knight Rider theme on midi and downloading it as my ringtone.
De-lurking to let the world know just how geeky I am. I have the MacGyver theme song as my ringtone, for everyone in my phonebook.
You know you can’t get much better than the salt-n-pepa ringtone!
When I call my husband, his phone rings “Mannish Boy” by Muddy Waters. His general ring is “Seven Turns” by the Allman Brothers Band.
I am partial to “The Final Countdown” by Europe or “Pour Some Sugar On Me” though I also have been known to use “Coconut” by Harry Nilsson.
I LOVE ringtones, but am on a strict diet of one new one every three months.
The only ringtone there is, Yea Alabama.
