TV is very complex, you know.

I’m currently watching Season 1 of Gilmore Girls. Am I in time for the bandwagon? No? It’s canceled? Oh well. Better late than never.

LilZ and I have been watching it and I think I really like it - but there are also moments I really don’t. At all.

I love it because Lorelai and Rory often times remind me of LilZ and I. Because I was young when I had LilZ, and we have a very similar friendship bond.

HOWEVER - it also bugs the crap out of me because the only reason Lorelai can be that good of friends with Rory is because Rory doesn’t ever need disciplining. She’s the perfect girl who gets good grades and follows the rules and wants to hang out with family. I don’t know if this bugs me because it seems unrealistic, or if it bugs me because what if it IS realistic and I just missed out on how to raise a kid you never have to yell at.

And why - exactly - do I care? As long as I don’t think about this show, I like it. But, when I start to contemplate their relationship and why mine and LilZ’s can’t be that perfect all the time, I get angry at the show and possibly curse it out.

I totally need a life. This is worse than covert garbage operations.

I’d say those kids don’t exist…but my sister-in-law IS one of those kids. I think it is genetic anomaly. That is the ONLY explanation. ;)

I agree about it being kindof non-realistic in the beginning, but after you get into a few more seasons, you’ll see many more normal mom/daughter happenings going on…

I’ll admit I started GG late, but caught up on all the early seasons on ABC Family. The later seasons are worth getting to.

Keep watching! It is a good show. Really. They had a few bad years in there, but really came back strong at the end of the last season this year.

Oh, and just come to terms that you’ll always hate Rory and her getting everything handed to her on a silver platter. Once you realize that, you can enjoy more. And snark more.

It’s never too late for the GG love!

Yeah, hang in there - Rory has her snarky moments. And, the other thing to keep in mind - this starts when Rory is 16, and may well be past the “hell” years. My mom and I are 17 years apart - and by the time I was 16, I was pretty much an unusually good teen. But at 13? I was from hell.

I came late to the Gilmore Girls as well….but I love them. And Rory does have her naughty moments later on…I really think the show gets better in the later seasons. Enjoy!

De-lurking. I LOVE the Gilmore Girls, but Rory’s life and personality is so completely unrealistic that it does make you hate her a bit (or a lot). When you watch the show just pretend it’s science fiction and it won’t bother you at all. Also I always wanted to live in their town; I need a Miss Patty and Babette.

It gets a little more realistic through the seasons. But you are right, season 1, Rory is a total dream child. Just give her time. :)

That’s interesting… I actually I have thought before how you and LilZ are the closest thing in real life (or the internet, anyway) that I’ve ever seen to Lorelei and Rory.

Definitely keep watching. Rory will (almost) always have things handed to her on a silver platter, but her and her mom will have their rough patches like any normal parent-child relationship. I actually think the Lorelei-Emily dynamic is the most interesting mother-daughter relationship on the show and possibly television.

I started watching GG last year and I’m now up to Season 4. It really is a great show. The writing and the pop-culture references are subtle and well played.

Lorelai and her wit can get a little draining at times, but overall the show carries a special warmth that many women with whom are close to their mom’s and vice-versa can identify.

Plus, the town of Stars Hollow was inspired by the town in which my husband grew up! That’s how I got sucked in. :-)

i Love the Gilmore Girls. im still upset its over. definetly keep watching. old or new, its just a great show. Rory annoys me sometimes, but I still love it. Sookie and Michelle crack me up. I wish i could find a Stars Hollow to live in!

I, too, was late to the GG party, but now I looooove it! Like others said, don’t lose hope, Rory does have her wild moments (there may be S-E-X involved-yikes!). It’s a cute, feel-good show that’s well written, funny and heartwarming.

The POD and I totally bonded over the whole Gilmore Girls thing and we often have marathon season watching sessions. And yes, Rory is too good to be true and how the hell do they afford that house on Lorelai’s salary? But you get used to it. I just love the constant witty banter.

Delurking after reading your blog for years.. I loved GG and was so sad to see it go. It is one of those rare shows that continued to get better and better so you have alot to look forward to. I second what others have said LilZ is only 12 and Rory is a high school freshman. They are past the worst of yelling years. Plus somewhere in there they fully admit that Rory is a strange kid… there is a scene where Lorelai is talking about this and states “By the time she was 4 SHE was helping the crossing guard cross the street.”

  14. Jennifer Says:

This must be the topic for de-lurking. My daughter Tate and I LOVE Gilmore Girls because Lorelai and Rory remind us a lot of each other. I definitely grew up with my daughters which gave us a very close relationship.

The series gets better in the next few seasons, Rory definitely gets a lot less ‘perfect’ and more real. I’m still not crazy about how they ended the series but I’ll leave that unsaid in case you decide to follow it further. :-)
