I’m losing the battle against the ugly.
Category: Pretending to be a girly-girl |
I'm in love with these shoes

Back during the heather v/s jon croc debate, I stayed fairly neutral. I personally thought they were ugly for me - but I understood the attraction to some. LilZ loved them, of course. And wore them for about five minutes until his foot grew out of them. (Note to self: Never Assume His Feet Can’t Get Bigger.) MrZ couldn’t get over the ugly factor, but swears by the comfy factor as he wears the flip-flop Crocs everyday during the summer. And my husband has damn picky feet. These are the first sandals he could wear without bitching incessantly about how little support they provide.

I could also never get past the ugly. Until Weaker Vessel posted the adorable Mary Janes. Now, I couldn’t justify buying them for myself just yet. But - I saw the baby version of the same Mary Jane Crocs in the children’s shoe department and I had to have them. It was a tax-free weekend and they were on sale, so I don’t feel too ridiculous. And look! SO FREAKIN’ ADORABLE.

I’m still not taking sides, but let’s just say there is a small part of me hoping my big-toe toenails fall off the summer so I have an excuse to buy a summer shoe that would hide my toes. (And yes, they will fall off, I’m just not sure when. They are close enough now that I vomit a little if anything touches them.) I’m now siding on the Mary Jane side of the croc debate. What about you? Do they seem any less hideous to you? Or do you still hate them with the force of a thousand sugar-high toddlers?

On kids and toddlers they are cute. On adults they are ugly. Reminds me of the jelly shoes days. Same thing.

  2. Ida Says:

They are my son’s most favorite shoes. (not the mary jane’s, of course.) Last summer I did a “Croc watch” on my site because he would wear any other shoes. He would cry when I took them off him for nap. He is now in a bigger size and still feels the same. My husband also loves his, but I still haven’t gotten over the ugly factor to get a pair for myself.

On her, they are absolutely adorable!! On me, they would look absolutely krazee!!

This fad reminds me of when everyone was wearing jelly shoes back in the day. Remember that? I just think, man, how did we think that was attractive?

    OMG, victorious! Another convert! YESSSS!

Personally, my shoe aesthetic leans toward the clunky, the slightly weird-looking, and of course, the mary-janey, so they look beautiful to me. But the real kicker is the COMFORT. I can walk in them all day and my feet still feel great, and I say that as a long-time aficionado of $100 comfort shoes like birks, earth shoes, danskos, etc. Plus, WATERPROOF! Totally awesome when you live in the subtropical south. Go, Baby Junior, go!

  5. Jennifer Says:

The Mary Janes are adorable. They are also the best camping shoe ever. You can slip them off before getting in the tent - everything stays so much cleaner. And you can wear them in gross camp shower. Perfect. I love them.

  6. callistawolf Says:

I think they are perfectly adorable on kids (esp toddlers and babies) and perfectly hideous on grown adults. Though the whole flip flop thing sounds intriguing as I’m currently OBSESSED with flip flops.

  7. Kyla Says:

I just got these in the black/red variety and my feet are in loooove. I only wear them with jeans for casual every day stuff. Pretty? No. Comfy? Oh yeah.

  8. Kathryn Says:

I still loath the regular Crocs on adults, though I can tolerate the flip-flops and actually kind of love the Alice and the Prima

I can’t find them in stores anywhere, though (the Alice isn’t out yet, but I’ve been searching for the Prima for ages), and I don’t want to buy them online b/c I hear the fit is wonky.

  9. Michelle Says:

They also make the most adorable ballet flat Crocs. I hated Crocs until I saw these .. they are SO great

OMG! They are so cute on her! I have some but I got the ones that are designed like a thong flip-flop. I love them for working in the yard. Feet get dirty? Just hose ‘em off!

  11. Catherine Says:

I have three pairs of crocs: pink, yellow and basic black. I used to wear them fairly often in the summer. But then I realized I’m not 12. Now I wear them to the pool and to the rec center. And maybe to the compost pile.

On kids? CUTE. On adults? Well, they made my feet look hideous wide. But I do love me a pair of Mary Janes.

  12. Amy Says:

I got my little man two pair, orange and blue, but they are the $4 Family Dollar version. Only thing missing is the croc head, but what does he know? He’s 3.

They are the only shoes he has worn since April. Effortless. I tell him to put his shoes on and he does - out the door we go! He pulled the little straps off of both pair that went around the back of his foot, so his are just slip on now, more like the flip-flop version.

  13. Diana Says:

Can’t wait to see pictures of NikkiZ in her crocs!

  14. Kirsten Says:

I adore my Crocs. I’m a nurse, and the comfort factor is beyond all, when I’m on my feet all day. They’re the first shoes that I’ve ever had that don’t make my feet feel like a lump of concrete after 3 hours, and though I’ve had a bad day, my -feet- don’t feel that way.

That was, however, until I realized that they have absolutely. No. Traction. In any type of fluid. Whatsoever.

I fell at work 3 times in a month and a half. Once in the hall, once in the dining room, and once in a resident’s bathroom. Those were all embarassing - the bump your knee, scrape your back, do the splits in front of God and everyone kind of embarrassing that has your cheeks flushed and tears in your eyes for the rest of the day.

I fell once in Wal~Mart, when they didn’t have the floor cleaner working properly at night and I hit a puddle of sludge while I was grocery shopping. That caused me to limp for a week.

And then I fell once at home. My washing machine drain backed up and I went into my laundry room to be greeted with a wading pool on the floor. My right foot went out from under me, I put my hand out trying to grab the door frame, missed, and ended up breaking my arm so badly I had to have surgery and a cast for 8 weeks.

Granted, I’m a clutz. But I haven’t fallen at all since I stopped wearing the clown shoes. I miss the comfort. But I don’t need another $10,000 hospital bill to repair a broken bone.

  15. mdv Says:

    The mary jane’s are cute.

  16. Liz Says:

Both my kids love them and they look cute on them. I have a pair of prima, they are comfortable minus the ugliness.

  17. Mom Says:

They look adorable on her little feet. I wear mine around the house and occasionally to work. They’re all ugly as h*ll but the one’s for children are “less ugly”

  18. Jessica Says:

while those MJ’s are super cute on Nikkiz’s precious little feets, those shoes are still DAMN ugly. HOWEVER, (oh god, did I jsut type however?) I kinda dig the flip-flops…

I refuse to purchase a pair for Girl! until she can say “most beautiful mommy on the Earth, would you please buy me a heinously colored pair of plastic molded, yet super comfy(so I hear), shoes? Thank you beautiful mommy of mine.” but she has to say ALL of that.

  19. Amy W Says:

My four year old lives in her Mickey Crocs…and I just bought my 18 month old the same mary jane crocs…love them!

  20. Justmeandher Says:

I love them. I still think they are ugly, and I clicked on the link the one lady left, and they have oodles of styles I hadn’t seen, they have wedges you know, UGLY. But they are very comfortable and my daughter loves to wear them(she if 4). I need to go back to the croc site and get her a few styles for her school wardrobe, she starts kindergarten in 2 weeks.

  21. Lisa Says:

Hate them. All versions. I have plenty of very comfortable shoes that are also attractive.

  22. Justmeandher Says:

Oh and to snakeepoo, the jelly’s they are back, EVERYWHERE.

  23. Scurvy Says:

I have Pirate Crocs, Mickey Crocs, Mary Janes, and several colors of beach Crocs. I love them! I would never wear any other shoes if I could help it. I know they are ridiculously ugly, but I don’t care. My sister, who is very trendy, was really into these hideous pointy toed shoes that made her look like an elf, but they were “in”. I figure if she’s going to look absurd and uncomfortable for the sake of fashion then I can look absurd for the sake of comfort.

I really want the new “Alice” style when they hit stores. I think they’re even cuter than the Mary Janes. And now there’s a new line by Crocs called “You” that don’t even look like Crocs. Some of them are a little weird even for me, but I’m eying one pair of heels. If they’re half as comfy as the other Crocs I’m totally getting those, too.

  24. Bethiclaus Says:

I hate them! Hate! But I find them acceptable on small children and obstetricians. I know that last one is weird, but it’s just what I think. Possibly also on pregnant women. Swollen feet suck.

  25. Stephanie Says:

I am firmly of the position that only children under the age of 5 can get away with it. I think Crocs are totally hideous, but the kids are cute enough to make up for it. Any older than that, and I just shudder and kinda want to knock them down and take them off their feet and ask them why they want to walk around in pastel, holey life rafts. Because that’s what they look like to me.

  26. Lindsey Says:

I have to agree-cute on kids and not so cute on adults! I FOR SURE couldn’t pull it off!

  27. Takin Chances Says:

The Mary Jane may be my all time favorite shoe. But Crocs are horrible. I feel they represent the demise of our culture as a whole. So I must fall on the side of hating them with the force of a thousand sugar-high toddlers.

  28. LeAnne Says:

I used to think they were ugly too, until my mother-in-law bought Madisen a pair. I think they are cute on little kids and so easy to put on and off compared to tennis shoes, I just don’t like seeing flourescent orange ones on adults.

  29. WendyB Says:

Kathryn, you should check out http://www.zappos.com for the primas. Best.site.ever. You get free shipping for both delivery AND for returns so if the fit is “wonky” you have nothing to worry about. Plus I have ordered in the morning, and had shoes delivered to my office the next day - great! Also a great site if anyone has hard to fit feet (wide, narrow, small, large) you can put if you size and see every shoe they have available in that size, or every shoe in red if your size, etc.

Can you tell I love that site?!?!

  30. Chantale Says:

I thought of buying some for my one year old. He loves playing in the fountains at the park, but his sandals are leather. I was so close to picking up a pair, but then found out what they cost. $25 for shoes that will fit my son for a month? Maybe two? No thanks! He can go barefoot in the fountains. I would never put them on him outside of the fountains either because I think they are ugly, even on babies. Or at least the boy version, the mary janes are actually pretty cute.

  31. Tara Says:

I think they are adorable on children just not on adults! But hey, for some people comfort rules.

  32. Lisa Says:

I think the Mary Jane’s are cute. I’ve never tried a pair on though.

  33. coffee slut Says:

I used to think they were ugly until I felt how comfortable they are. Now, well I STILL think they’re ugly but I wear them everywhere.

  34. Isabel Says:

I think they are adorable on little kids. (I need to get Babboo some of the cheaper version!)

  35. tiffany Says:

i still think crocs are ugly, but every parent i know is in love with them. they are just the perfect summer shoe for little kids.

  36. SJ Says:

I fell in love with crocs about 4 1/2 years ago when I was 7 months pregnant with my first son. They were comfortable and actually fit my big, fat swollen, pregnant flippers! And that was when they only had the one style! Now it’s endless and since I started wearing them, I haven’t looked back. I love them!

And yes, they look adorable on little kiddie feet :)

  37. Michelle Says:

They are so ugly…but oh dear God so comfy. I have to admit to owning the mary janes in black for myself. I have even stopped apologizing for wearing such ugly shoes because they make my feet so happy.
