To “No Follow” or Not To “No Follow”

I’ve been thinking about this entry from IzzyMom quite a bit. Let me backtrack a bit to explain my position on this subject and possibly bore the shit out of you.

I do not have ads on my site and don’t want ads on my site. It just feels weird to me. On the other hand, I have no problem with other people having ads. As a matter of fact, sometimes I wish I had ads so I could justify this blogging habit. Now — what did start to bother me is when, several months ago, there was talk on certain sites about how some of the Big Name Bloggers were starting to worry people were commenting on their sites just to have their URLs show up on the page for when Google does Page Rank updates.

For those of you who have no idea what that means, I’ll lay it out for you. Google gives sites Page Rank based on traffic and incoming links. In other words, you get a higher Page Rank (on a 1-10 scale) the more places that have links for your site. It’s especially powerful if the sites that have your link on them have a higher Page Rank than you do. The higher the Page Rank that Google gives your site, the better placement you get in Google Searches and the better ads you can get. If you have the Google toolbar, the PR is shown for each page on that toolbar. If you do not – there are places you can go to see but I don’t know any off the top of my head.

Essentially – for someone like me with no ads? I don’t really worry about Page Rank. I mean – I don’t want the next update to drop me to zero, of course. But – I’m not going to freak out about getting it raised either.

Well – it was when I first heard about these accusations that I stopped leaving my URL when I comment at any site with a Page Rank of 3 or more. Sometimes I forget and leave it, but most of the time I don’t. I hate NOT leaving my URL because I want people to visit my blog but I don’t want anyone to be paranoid about the quest for backlinks. I know it seems silly, but I hate the idea of someone thinking I’m commenting for some greater gain on my end. (Again with the guilt issues…) I don’t comment a lot (I know! Bad blogger!) and if I suddenly pop in and comment, I don’t want someone thinking I’m doing it for selfish reasons.

So – I’m torn about this issue. I like the “no follow” thing on the links in my comments because if a spam bot is crawling my site, it won’t see that link and go to your site. Izzy is recommending removing the “no follow” attribute so that the Google Bots will follow the link and then give you credit for having your link on her site. Thereby increasing your Page Rank with the next update. (Page Rank only gets updated every few months.)

And I just don’t know how I feel about that. I hate thinking about this crap. (Pain…In my head…Need Beer…) I don’t want you to not comment because you won’t get credit for that link. But, I also don’t want people (not YOU, of course) commenting just to get that credit. And what if you don’t want the spam bots seeing your page? What if you like the “No Follow” thing? So – I’m torn. And I was wondering if any of you who comment even care or am I — as usual — making a big deal out of nothing?

Essentially:

Option A – You would comment more if I turned the “No Follow” thing off, allowing you to get credit for the link you leave in the comment section.

Option B – You would comment less if I turned the “No Follow” thing off because you are worried spam bots would find your site.

Option C – You do not give 2 flying shits and would rather talk about whether or not the new Wendy’s Frosty Floats are products of the devil or gifts from heaven.

    I pick Option C.

Seriously, I had no idea about that whole page rank thing. I average 0 comments per day on my blog, so I don’t think my rank is so high as it is. I just leave my link in hopes that someone, anyone, will find her way to my blog and leave me a little comment love. Not because I am trying to steal rank from anyone!

But I do love your blog!

  2. zoot says:

Shwew. Good. I don’t really want to have to change anything. Too Lazy.

  3. Average Jane says:

I agree with Mary – when I comment it’s not to increase my rank, it’s because I had something I wanted to say. I wouldn’t be offended (or probably even notice) if a blog had “no follow” activated, but it really doesn’t even enter my mind.

  4. zoot says:

Woo Hoo! Two votes for not caring! I knew I was making a big deal out of nothing. This is why you should all feel sorry for my husband.

  5. Sarah says:

I didn’t even know this was an issue. But I’m also bored so I followed IzzyMom’s link.. and it turns out that (on WordPress, anyway), your link is only counted after the first ten comments. So you’d have to be a dedicated reader/commenter to have any benefit at all.

Who comments for reasons like those anyway?

  6. zoot says:

@Sarah – really? Well – then it should really be a non-issue. I need to create an ApathyBloggersNetwork for those of us who just don’t care! hee.

  7. I pick option C and this is my very first comment on a blog of someone I don’t know in real life. I just wanted to say that by the end of that post, I was giggling from my own confusion. I didn’t know blogging was so complicated! (I am very new at this).

  8. jennyadp says:

    I don’t have a blog so I guess it would be C.

Wendy’s FFs are gifts from heaven. I like to vary from the vanilla and have a chocolate FF with coke. Also off the subject, they just replaced the Krispy Kreme with Chick-Fil-A near us. Sad to see KK go but looking forward to trying CFA. Any suggestions on what to get on my first visit?

  9. zoot says:

@squishycutegirl – Leave it to ME to make it uber-complicated. I knew this was a stupid concern that no one was worried about but me. WHY? I should simply stick to talking about boob sweat like I usually do.

  10. zoot says:

@jennyadp – OMG. I couldn’t choose between KK and Chick-fil-a – they are both awesome. I always get the chicken biscuit for breakfast and the classic chicken sandwich (same thing, just on a bun instead of a biscuit) for any other meal. SO AWESOME. It’s also the #1 combo at both breakfast and lunch. Will you pick me up one while you’re at it?

  11. Busy Mom says:

    Visit busymom.net!

    Kidding.

    Love the vanilla floats.

  12. Gwen says:

Option C – Frosties and Boobsweat for me, please.

  13. zoot says:

@busymom – HA! I don’t think I like the floats. I like my frosty chocolate and with french fries dipped into it – thank you very much.

  14. zoot says:

@Gwen – AT THE SAME TIME? I don’t think the world could handle it.

  15. canape says:

    Option C. Yum.

However, I did do Izzy’s “no follow” suggestion, because I think a lot of the people who comment on my blog would like to up their page rank. I don’t think it is WHY they comment, but I thought it would be nice.

I comment because I want to, not because I want something in return. Usually I try to have something to say, but there are no promises there.

  16. Cassie says:

Honestly, I never really think about the spam bots. I’ve only had my current blog going for about 6 months or so, and I always leave the URL. People who I comment on are normally people that I perceive myself to have things in common with. I read their blogs and often don’t comment until a LONG time after I started reading (hi, I think this is my first comment here in reality), and I assume that the person will want to see who I am and what I’m all about. That’s what I do when people leave me comments! I want to know who the person is!
    :)

I have massive boob sweat right now, FYI.

  17. Izzy says:

FWIW, I’ve had “no follow” on my blog for several months now and my spam really hasn’t changed at all. I always got a shitload before and I still do…lol The bright spot, I suppose, is that WordPress has a kickass spam filter.

In any case, you can definitely look at the no-follow/do-follow topic a number of ways and i know there are many people who question the whole thing, as you do.

For me, I see it as a way of paying it forward to my loyal readers and commenters. I truly do love that people take time every day to read, comment, lurk, whatever. It means a lot to me. Am sappy like that.

My pagerank (without meaning to sound all, you know…) is a 5 and I’m happy with it but I get a ton of email from people asking how to monetize their blogs, how to up their pagerank, how to carve some mad money out of their hobby with hopes that someday it will be more.

So when i tell them that giving to others first (via do follow) may help them as well, I mean that with all sincerity. I honestly don’t think I’m teaching them to play the system or anything like that. It’s more like if everyone does it, then everyone benefits sort of thing.

To be honest, I never heard anything about big bloggers getting huffy about people trying to score a link from them. I would assume that keeping their blogs on “no follow” would alleviate that altogether.

Personally, unless someone is spamming me, I’m happy to let them have the link. It doesn’t really affect me so I don’t mind. It’s like giving a gift that costs me nothing, KWIM?

  18. zoot says:

@canape – When you put it that way it does seem like a nice thing. And I like to be nice. But I also like to be lazy…so tough.

I rarely say anything substantial, which may be the other reason why I don’t leave a link…

  19. zoot says:

@Izzy – so you think the spam bot concern is a fear of the past then? Nothing I should worry about? I don’t get spammed often (Yay! WordPress!) but I do worry others arent so lucky.

And yeah – I thought it was silly when I heard the mutterings before, but I also don’t want to deny my readers something they may deserve. SO TOUGH.

  20. zoot says:

@Cassie – I have massive boob sweat too! Did you take a picture like I did the other day? (I’m so lame.)

  21. Izzy says:

Sarah: To clarify, the WordPress link is for a plugin and 10 is the default for number of comments before someone gets “no follow” removed from their comments but it’s changeable. Most people I know set it around 3. I use a different plugin that gives no option at all. It’s “do follow” for everyone.

  22. Izzy says:

It’s totally okay to not do it, especially if spam is a concern. That part about being a butthead? I was jus’ keeeeding :)

  23. Gifts from heaven. Especially with fries.

In other words: I have no idea what you’re talking about.

    At all.

    :D

  24. Michelle says:

I’m all for option C. I don’t care. I blog because it’s fun, I blog because it’s the thing that I do that is MINE, it’s my me time, you know? All the technical jargon and blogging “rules” are for people who take it way more seriously than I do.

I see how bad that probably sounds, so I want to make it clear I’m not making fun of people who take blogging Very Seriously. Sometimes I think I should take blogging more seriously than I do, but for now it’s just…I don’t care. I leave the URL for my blog because if someone finds my comments interesting and wants to see what I’m all about, they should be able to find me easily if they want to come visit me at my house, so to speak, you know? Page rank, schmage rank, what was that about a Frosty Float? :)

  25. Stephanie says:

I don’t use ads, so I personally don’t get the whole page rank deal. I actually had no idea you could increase your own rank by leaving a comment on someone else’s site… I just assumed it had to do with actual traffic to your site (and mine is practically zero). I just comment because I like a person’s entry or website and I leave my URL because I hope that they (or someone else reading them) would occasionally check out mine. I don’t think I would notice a difference if you switched from no-follow to do-follow or not. I would continue to leave my URL, and if I ended up getting more spam comments… well, hopefully my spam filter would continue to be able to pick up on them.

  26. Jen says:

completely off topic here, but in your post about you beautiful kitchen (the one I now want), you mentioned your husband put in a garbage disposal. What in the world do you use that thing for? I have one in my house and I still haven’t used it except to accidentally mangle silverware. Please help me.

  27. zoot says:

@shy me Victoria. Here’s the question: Do you dip your french fries in the float b/c I dip mine in the frosty.

  28. zoot says:

@Michelle – I am famous for making big deals out of NOTHING. You should hear some of the fights I start with my husband.

  29. Kyla says:

Option C…because all I understood was Wendy’s Frosty Floats. ;)

I kind of hate that whole aspect of blogging…the competition, the ranking, the popularity contests. It isn’t prevalent where I read for the most part…it is more about community than rankings, I think. I don’t like thinking anyone is questioning anyone else’s motives, ya know? But I do know it happens. It kind of bums me out that you feel like you can’t leave your link some place you comment.

  30. Stephanie says:

Oh, and I do NOT like the Frosty floats… gimme a plain old chocolate Frosty and some dunkable french fries any day.

(Although, I just saw that Wendy’s now makes something like McD’s McFlurries now, but they didn’t look as good as actual McFlurries.)

  31. zoot says:

@Stephanie – and in reality – it’s not like you could trace those spam bots back to me, right? So maybe I could turn the “No Follow” Thing off and no one would notice!

  32. zoot says:

@Jen – any food bits from the plates and bowls!

  33. zoot says:

@Kyla – but we all know that’s all ME probably being paranoid, right? No one has actually told ME they suspect ME of link-diving. I’m just the one who is always worried someone is thinking ill of them. When really no one even notices me rocking back and forth in the corner muttering about frosties.

  34. Elizabeth says:

Option C. Everything else makes my head hurt.
I blog because I NEED to write to stay sane and I just don’t care about any of the rest of it.

  35. zoot says:

@Elizabeth – do frosties make your head hurt? They’ll do that if you eat them too fast, you know. ;)

  36. Bunny says:

So basically, I had NO IDEA about this ranking business. I don’t really care, personally. I leave my url when I comment in typepad but I just want people who read my comments to have the option of looking at my blog. I just comment when I have something to say to zoot, not that I want the big brother google gods to notice.

  37. zoot says:

@bunny – see? That’s what I thought. I didn’t think it was that big of a deal but you know me: Gotta Make Sure I’m Not Making People Mad. ;)

  38. zoot says:

OH – TO EVERYONE – I really don’t think MY commenters comment only because of Page Rank. I just wonder if it would pull the lurkers out if they’d get the perks of having a link here. (Hee hee. Perks.) But obviously no one cares – so don’t worry!

  39. Kristabella says:

Wow, I feel so enlightened. I had NO idea about any of this stuff.

I really hope the Big Bloggers don’t get upset because I never comment just to comment and get my link out there. I comment because I have something to say and want them to know “hey, I liked your post” or “the same thing happened to me” or something of the sort. I’m a blogger. OF COURSE I have a lot to say! And if it gets me new readers, then yay! I like to have new friends.

I don’t have ads though. I’ve gone back and forth in my head about getting them. Like you said, wouldn’t it be nice to get paid for something you already enjoy doing and are going to do anyway?

And I’m totally not against people getting credit for commenting. They should! I LOVE commenters, so if they get something more out of it that listening to my drivel, good for them. But I guess my big issue is the spam. But WordPress’ spam filter is awesome.

So yeah, I’m torn. Think Option C is best. Where’s mah ice cream?

    And sorry for the novel.

  40. zoot says:

@Kristabella – *hands over an ice cream cone* Thanks for chiming in! I think I’m going to look at it that way – giving people credit they deserve for commenting!

  41. sam says:

Well, I pick C… WTF is a Wendy’s Frosty Float…. I hope they haven’t done gone and changed a perfect soft ice cream treat!?

And… I have ads. I never thought I would. I contemplated even doing it when I was approached by BlogHer to put them up. I figured if I can get even a little extra money from doing something I love so much, who cares if I profit (like 20 bucks) from it!? I’m not encouraging any clicking or looking, it’s just there.
I haven’t thought about it in relation to page ranking. I actually treat them completely separately. But now….. LOL

And! I tend NOT to comment on big blogs because in my pee brain I think “WTH cares, there’s 45 comments there already, they’re not even going to read this one.” and I usually click out.
I’ve only *just* started to comment if I had something Awesome! Hilarious! or Witty! in response.

Even you, my beloved Zoot. I read in the feed reader and never comment because there’s a bazillion here usually and figure “meh, she might not even see my measly comment in that sea of million comments.”

So, now that’s I’ve written a comment just about as long as your post, I’ve made no conclusion and little sense.

PR = meh. Kinda like to see a higher rank (then the zero I currently site at after leaving Blogger)

Ads = *pffft* Money for nothing (and chicks for free!) and I get to do what I love.

Dofollow = I do. I think it’s nice and everyone deserves a little linky love. Makes people (me) feel special to get it and I like giving it.

  42. tiffany says:

oh, man. i’ve been a commenting fool lately: the most important thing i learned at blogger was ‘you need to talk to people, dumbass!’ so, i’ve been leaving a lot more comments…and, yes, i was doing it in an attempt to broaden my blogging horizons…but, at the same time, i only comment when i’ve read something that moved me and i felt like i could add something to the conversation.
i didn’t even know that this whole ‘no follow’ thing existed.

and, now that i’ve blathered on…i also pick option c. i understand why you would worry about these things, but, in the end? i don’t know, i feel like we have enough stuff to worry about.

  43. zoot says:

@sam – Wendy’s is now offering their Frosty as a Float. I think it’s gross. Amen.

(but I love love love the original Frosty! With fries for dipping!)

And some of my entries don’t even get comments – so never fear! I always love them all equally!

  44. zoot says:

@tiffany – Yes. I have plenty of stuff to worry about. Like the fact that High School Musical 2 is coming out on Friday! (Does that count as more important – or less?)

  45. Cassie says:

I WISH I had taken a picture of my boob sweat. I can see the Christmas card already “From Cassie’s boob sweat to your holiday cheer!” I’ll have to include a picture of my cat wrestling with my shoes too. It’ll be perfect.

  46. callistawolf says:

I love the idea of giving people “credit” for commenting on my blog. I don’t get a whole lot of comments as it is, and anything that is incentive is good in my book. And since I do have an ad or two on my site, I should probably care about PageRank but I have to admit it’s been a long time since I’ve checked it. I should care, but I don’t. LOL! That’s probably worse, huh? I went ahead and installed the plugin for WordPress that’ll remove the ‘nofollow’ thing since I didn’t understand it until now. If someone with a big name (or no name at all) wants to leave a comment and leave their link? MORES THE BETTER. I think people that bitch about that sort of thing and make people (such as yourself) feel bad are being petty. It’s all about link love, right?

So I guess I vote for somewhere between option A) and option C) since I think it’s a great incentive but I’m probably far too lazy to actually comment more. LOL!

  47. zoot says:

@Cassie – I think it sounds AWESOME. I put pizza on my cat and took a picture. I’m the lamest of them all!

  48. zoot says:

@callistawolf – Yes! It is all about the linky love, isn’t it! Would you like an ice cream too? ;)

  49. leslie says:

Definitely option C. And what new Wendy’s float?? Our yankee wendy’s don’t have a new float! I feel gypped!

Though you know, it kind of cheeses me off that Big Name Bloggers care why someone comments beyond worrying about if they are a troll or a stalker. PArt of why is that I am an infrequent commenter. I just don’t have time to comment as much as I’d like. Half the time I’m lucky if I get to read all my blogs on a daily basis, much less comment. And I know I am not the only one pressed for time, so the fact that infrequent commenting might make someone think that?? Makes me a little speechless.

  50. sam says:

(since you closed the comments on the new posts *tee hee*)

I think you’re super cute!! And every time I read your blog I think about the video you posted from BlogHer when the birdy pooped on you. (Sorry, probably not the image you’re hoping to project!)

I’ll the one that’s going to be dry humping your leg at BlogHer next year, so get ready!

  51. I also don’t care what other bloggers choose to set for their site; this one included, especially since I’m a fairly new reader and think I’ve only commented once before;>

That said, I don’t see why someone should get the link back counted on a comment they left. So, just because the blogger doesn’t delete the comment, that commenter benefits from the link back? That doesn’t really seem to fall in line with how the whole page rank thing is supposed to go, in my opinion. In page rank utopia, you get a link back because the someone found your blog/post to be worthy of mention, either in sidebar or in one of their own posts.

  52. sweetney says:

i think its really interesting (and weird! very weird!) that people care so much about this one way or other — people obsessing over ranks and their places in some sort of computer-generated hierarchy. OMFG WHAT DOES GOOGLE THINK OF ME?

i’m just over all of it, frankly. and i know some people aren’t, and that’s their thing and more power to them, but it all feels very, err, *trying too hard*? with a dash of reinforcing icky hierarchies? or something? (not you zoot, but those obsessing over the no-follow-ing and page rank-ing and such.)

2-cents, and probably not a popular 2-cents, but there you go.

  53. zoot says:

@leslie – I think the frosty float is GROSS – so don’t feel gypped! And I just added the no-follow plugin so you all ARE feeling love today

  54. zoot says:

@sam – just make sure no bird pooped on me first!

  55. JoyLynn says:

I think my eyes glazed over about the second or third line, because it’s all irrelevant to someone like me [who gets, ummm...maybe 1 or two comments a month on her pathetic little blog]. However, I agree with the previous commentors that when I comment, I include the link to my site [on the off chance someone decides to be nice and click my name] so that people get a chance to see/learn who’s commenting on their blog. Whether you Do Follow or No Follow matters none to me – it’s your blog, you do as you so choose. I’ll still continue to make my very irrelevant comments whenever I can. :)

And, I haven’t tried Wendy’s new Frosty Floats…should I make a stop by Wendy’s on the way home tonight? :)

  56. zoot says:

@sweetney – It’s all very weird and I’m never sure whether or not I should care since I don’t have ads but I also don’t want my commenters cheated from perks they get elsewhere. Like – I hear you’re giving your commenters donuts. Or is that just a rumor?

  57. zoot says:

    @JoyLynn – I don’t know – I didn’t like them! I like my frosty CLASSIC style.

  58. Jillian Kay says:

    Option C!

If we start changing our habits and communication because of the bots, then the ROBOTS WIN. Before you know it, they will start to think for themselves and then they will enslave the human race!

j/k. but seriously, i think it’s silly to worry about it too much. it’s rude of people to leave comments just for rank, but then again, the bigger the conversation the more fun. :) technology should help us connect, not prevent us from doing so.

  59. wwbd says:

C! I hate to admit this, but I don’t know what a Frosty Float is. I do know that that I want one, though!

  60. Lizarita says:

I’m probably late to the game (as usual) but I like options c. I don’t give a crap what your page rank is or my page rank is but I sure as HELL give a crap about a vanilla frosty. WHAT THE HELL!? Frosty’s are chocolate. PERIOD. None of this VANILLA business makes any sense to me. Much like the page rank crap.

  61. zoot says:

@Jillian Kay – We must FIGHT the robots! Let’s go!

And yes – the bigger conversation is more fun. Especially when discussing frosties and robots!

  62. zoot says:

@wwbd – But I find the original frosty a sacred institution that should not be screwed with! ;)

  63. zoot says:

@Lizarita: My Point EXACTLY. Vanilla Frosties? What is this world coming too?

  64. Nicole P. says:

Doesn’t the whole page rank thing completely defeat the purpose of happy little rainbows-and-bunnies blogging world? I’d say it’s pretty sad and pathetic just to leave a comment to raise your own sites stats. That’s just not the point.

Can there be a separate “jerk” tag for people who are just cruising the sites without giving a crap about what people are actually writing?

Wow, didn’t realize I had an opinion on this until just now.

  65. Mindy says:

    C. I don’t give two flying shits about the frosty either but that’s only because sugar and I don’t get along and I’m filled with rage that other people can have as much of it as they want. Bitter, bitter me.

  66. Sadie says:

I don’t give a flying fig about page rank. I also don’t care about spybots.

I DO care about frosties, and I second Lizarita and your emotions about Vanilla. First of all, it’s blasphemous, because FROSTIES ARE CHOCOLATE. Second of all? They’re just not good.

Although I haven’t tried the floats. I’m not a float person.

  67. zoot says:

@Nicole P – Yes! Bring on the Rainbows! And the “Jerk” Tag!

@Mindy – Well, I’m currently raging about not being able to drink diet coke. Wanna rage together?

@Sadie – I’m not a float person either. But my husband is a lover of all things float-y (gross) and salivates over the ads.

  68. Catherine says:

I leave comments because I think everyone is entitled to my POV. And part of that is being able to go to my blog so that you can see I’m a complete moron. :)

I’ve left comments and gotten email back from A-list bloggers. Mostly it makes me pee my pants with glee. I don’t think about my page rank. (see above about being a moron)

And, since you’re all entitled to this: there is only one true way to enjoy a treat at Wendy’s. An original frosty & some dippin fries.

  69. AlliT says:

ok.. ok… frosties, smotzies……. has anyone had the “blizzard” thingy from Wendy’s… They give you a little bag full of yo own cookie crumbles so you can decide on how much or little you want in yo ice cream….. I am a control freak sooooo I love it!!!!!!! YUM!! and you can get frostie swirl ice cream fo yo blizzard thingy if you can’t decide on vanilla or the shizzzznit chocolate…

Links, hits, followers, sounds like there is some mob hit out for you….. scary…… I will stick to the ice cream.

  70. Amy says:

I ordered a chocolate frosty the other night and got a vanilla. Didnt notice till I was too far down the road to turn back.
    I’m still bummed.

And clueless on all that other stuff.

  71. Isabel says:

I hadn’t heard about this. But after reading Izzy’s post I installed the plug-in (which I learned about about from Marilyn at BlogHer, yahoo!) for wordpress.

And now I must google to find out more info.

And Frosty’s are yummy. But we don’t have a Wendy’s out here in downtown Seattle. So yeah, that part sucks.

  72. zoot says:

@Catherine – Amen to Frosty and Fries! And to Peeing a Little!

    @AlliT – I like my Wendy’s desserts simple. ;)

@Amy – Oh, man. That makes me cry a little.

@Isabel – Want me to mail you one?

  73. Momish says:

I’m right there with you at C. Although getting higher Google Ranking is nice, if spam is an issue – I fear. But, mostly I comment for the sake of making a comment, not upping my status.

(I too was not aware of that at all until I read Izzy’s post)

  74. zoot says:

@momish – So, if it upped your PR you could consider it a bonus. Like if I had free coffee in my comments section! (Which, is there a plugin for that?)

  75. OKAY, Definitly C. Also, yeah…… bits of heaven given to us by the devil.

  76. zoot says:

@Ashley&Family – that’s how I feel about the Ben&Jerry’s that is now in my mall.

  77. Melizzard says:

Okay I vote for C… and what are these Wendy’s floats that you speak of? Tell me more … Clearly I need to get my butt to Wendy’s.

I found Izzy’s post last night in a fit of insomnia and followed the bouncing balls to put it in place on my site but was really just a vehicle for me to learn more about Typepad Templates than for the anything consider that my blog is way to new to have any regular commenters – Just a few lost souls that amble by and ask for directions back to where they meant to be going.

  78. Mejan says:

I pick C. Even though I don’t like ice cream and soda mixed together. I know! I’m nuts. I prefer my Butterfinger or Reeses Pieces Frosty/Blizzard/Turbo/WHATEVERs. Yum.

Also? Didn’t know about any of this, I’m too new to blogging to know (or care…I suppose). Maybe someday when I’ve mindmelded you all into reading, I’ll care, but eh? Probably not then either. I crack myself up, that’s good enough for me. :-)

  79. Chantale says:

Wendy’s has a new frosty float?! OMG!

Are there any Wendy’s in California? I’ve yet to see any…

  80. zoot says:

@Melizzard – we all start there! I even started on Typepad. And anything to learn more about the templates – but be careful. Once I changed all of my font to size 1 million and bright purple. I’m awesome.

@Mejan – I do NOT like floats. You know why? the foam. BLAH. Ice cream and soda should NOT mix.

  81. zoot says:

    @Chantale – No Wendy’s? You poor thing!

  82. Lisa says:

    C. Now may I have my float, please? :D

  83. zoot says:

@Lisa – *hands over the (slightly melted) float* All Yours!

  84. kimblahg says:

Wow, you gave that a lot of thought didn’t you?

  85. zoot says:

@kimblahg – yes. Now if only I could put as much thought in my wardrobe – maybe I’d quit going to work in my pajamas.

    @ferd – Well said. ;)

  86. Les~ says:

    Option C.

    Please and thank you!

  87. Jezer says:

Mmm, HUH? I’m going to have to go with C because I have no freaking idea what’s going on in A and B. I just comment when I feel like it. I had no clue about the whole rank thingy.

  88. Pocklock says:

    C. Because. Oh. My. GOD those floats are killer.

  89. Jenny H. says:

    C. Sorry about coming in late, but I just got off work. Well, really just FINALLY got the kids to bed!

I don’t really care because I don’t get a lot of traffic to my site. At least I don’t think I do! You have left a comment or two on my old site before. I thought that was cool. Why would you have to leave me your URL when I already read your site everyday? Okay, several times a day!

DO NOT even get me started on spambots. That is why I left my old site. Seriously. They left me over 400 IN ONE DAY! I could not get rid of them. It made me crazy.

And just for the record? Wendy’s Frosty’s can ONLY be eaten with french fries AND they MUST be dipped IN SAID FROSTY. That is absolutely crucial.

  90. Brie says:

I vote for C. I blog because I want to. Didn’t even know page rank existed. I don’t care about my page rank.
I actually use word press (after I read about it on your site) and check my stats on their counter when I feel like it.
I comment when the mood or the blog entry strikes me!

  91. Brie says:

Also, have not had Frosty Floats because I am trying to lose weight which means no fun food like Frosty Floats, damn it!

  92. zoot says:

    @Brie – I personally don’t think you’re missing anything!

  93. Anne Glamore says:

I read Izzy’s entry and I didn’t get it and despite your beautiful explanation I still don’t get it. It must be like geometry; I didn’t get that either.

Will you just tell me what to do?

  94. Bonnie says:

I understood about half of what you explained and I choose option C-don’t care. I’m really just into all the blogs for the great laughs and knowing there are other moms out there who survive this thing called “raising children”.

  95. Lara says:

I guess I’m tired and will have to read this again because all I can think is “Huh, whut?” But since I have commented here before (maybe once or twice?) I’d like to say I don’t comment for any traffic or stats – just when I feel like…making a comment? My blog is boring as all heck – started it while traveling and now am updating with thrilling posts about renovating my condo…easier to keep my friends and family updated that why (makes them stop calling me so much…kidding!) I’ll keep reading you (and occasionally commenting) whatever you decide :)
ps, I’m in Canada. Is a Frosty Float the same as a regular Frosty?

  96. Lara says:

that “way” not that “why”. dumb fingers.

  97. margalit says:

I don’t think it’s worth fretting over, to tell you the truth. I took off the ‘no follow’ in my code months ago. I did it because I think it’s fair for people to get better page ranks, as that does help in selling ads for those that want to have ads on their blogs. My page rank is 5. I display it proudly on my blog. It isn’t high, it isn’t low, it’s average. I display it so if someone does want to leave a comment just to get a followback, then fine with me. I don’t care, honestly. To me, it seems like one blogger helping out another. I don’t comment at the big popular sites very much (like never) and I’m not commenting just to get a followback. I honestly don’t think that most people are even contemplating the extra boost when they pull off the ‘no follow’ and then leave comments elsewhere. I mean, who is that calculating?

If someone IS doing that, it’s their issue. It’s not what blogging is about, nor is it what I’m about. I honestly really doubt it’s the big issue that you’re worrying about.

I think people are way more concerned with their technorati scores than google rank, anyhow.

  98. Jenny says:

Follow the link to the goodness that is the Frosty Float:
    http://www.wendys.com/food/Product.jsp?family=8&product=175
(or cut and paste) Not too foamy in the picture. May cure boob sweat or at least make you forget for a moment.

  99. Thank you for laying this all out, because I never knew anything about ANY of this. I comment when I feel compelled to and when there aren’t already ten million comments. I wouldn’t know if you changed it or not, and frankly wouldn’t care!

Just do what YOU think is right.

  100. zoot says:

@Anne Glamore – share a frosty with me!

@Bonnie – Yes, well…I tend to be overly analytical – forgive me!

@Lara – No – the Frosty Float is like the old soda shop floats, it mixes a frosty with a soda. I think it’s GRODY but some love it!

@margalit – I have no idea what my technorati score is.

@Jenny – but my classic frosty is just so perfect – why mess with perfection!?

@Katie (The Yap) – Even if I think it’s right to sit around and drink frosties all day? ;)

  101. Bethiclaus says:

Oh my god, definitely C. My head kind of hurt from reading the entry, actually. I comment because I want you to know that I’m reading, not because I want anyone to click my link.

  102. cursingmama says:

    option c – I love me a frosty.
That said, I am moving to ads only because right now I’m hoping to find a little extra money in the mattress – (thats the abbreviated version).

    - now I feel guilty for leaving my website address because I had no idea about this stuff….and am going to go change some stuff on my page….

  103. Tam says:

Holy crap. I had no clue ANY of that stuff was even going on! I’m such a rookie…

  104. chris says:

Wow all these comments on this topic. I pick C, because really I don’t care and I do have ads. I love my ads, or rather I love the spare change I get from my ads.

I had no idea blogging was so complicated…

  105. Lara says:

Oh a frosty FLOAT, now I get it. Be still my heart. I hope they aren’t replacing regular frosties because they are near to perfection, but if I’m south of the line I may have to try the float version too. (Hee, we say “pop” not “soda” up north here, “soda” always sounds so cute to me).

Glad you cleared that up for me. Still no opinion on the other thing.

  106. maryjo says:

I never even knew about all of this!! HAHA I mean I knew people have come to my site after I’ve left comments. I left a comment on Dooce’s site about 10 months ago and I seriously STILL get people visiting from it. That rocks. Page views though? Yeah, I had no idea that people even cared?

Oh and I don’t really like the Frosty Float… it doesn’t have enough rootbeer in my opinion.

  107. Oh, wow, hey. I got SO excited when I read “Wendy’s” that I just assumed you meant Frosty. I totally dip my fries in the Frosty (Frostee?) but don’t think I’ve ever tried a float.

*backs slowly from the debate since apparently I was talking about something kinda different. But. Oh. So. Good!”

  108. Jem says:

Option C…I’ve never thought of any of this before

Hi. I’m Kim.

This is my blog that I've been writing on since January, 2004. I call myself Zoot as it's a derivative of an old childhood nickname. I used to write about my struggles to have children, but eventually I succeeded and now, I write a lot about those kids. I don't use my kid's exact names simply because if someone Googles their very unique names in the future, I don't want them stumbling upon my entries about boobsweat. I mean, would you hire someone whose Mom writes openly about such topics? NO. YOU WOULD NOT.

I love taking pictures and carry my camera (almost) everywhere I go. This means you'll see a lot of photos on this site. I also periodically post recipes I like as I've been slowly (but surely) learning to cook and I like to share my discoveries. Finally? I'm an annoying pop culture fanatic so I'll periodically ramble about Hunger Games or the latest Parks and Recreation.

I hope you like it here. If not? Please don't tell me. I cry easily.
