The 8-minute blog entry
Category: Movies, Music and More, Randomly | 19 Comments »

I have to make this fast. The internet is working but I don’t know for how long. Every time I’ve tried to write a blog entry this weekend, the internet crapped out on me halfway through. And I cursed loudly. And possibly threw a rainbow colored stuffed horse at the router. Nothing says “angry” like a full spectrum of plush aimed at an inanimate object.

I mean, jeezus, Friday was High School Musical 2 and I have yet to talk about it!

Before the movie started on Friday, we had 10 kids in my living room. TEN KIDS. MrZ about had a heart attack when he walked in halfway through the movie. He was caught by surprised and thought, “Who are these people? And why is my wife dancing in front of the television?”

First let me say: I’ve only seen HSM2 once and I can’t rate it compared to the first one until I’ve seen it several more times. LilZ spent Saturday and part of Sunday with his Dad, so I didn’t have any excuse to watch it again without my husband immediately filing for divorce. By Sunday the weekend HSM1 came out, LilZ and I already knew all of the dances by heart. I am disappointed in myself.

My initial review is that it was really good. BUT – I always feel like I have to add this disclaimer: Part of what I feel makes me a good mother is I have really trained myself to enjoy the same things LilZ does. It allows us to get excited about similar books, movies and music and fosters a continuing bond as he enters his teens. I had to say that because 10 years ago? I would have poked my eyes out with an egg-beater before finishing this movie.

But it was fun! I love, love, loved the “I Can’t Dance” song and dance number. It’s done around a baseball diamond with baseball players. As opposed to the basketball number from the first movie. I told MrZ it was a baseball movie and that he would have loved it. He didn’t seem to believe me.

All in all it was a good movie and a really fun night. I know it’s cheesy as hell and possibly considered torture in some circles, but I’d much rather be surround by tweens watching High School Musical 2 than Laguna Beach or whatever the new version is called. And I’m just a sucker for a musical.

Okay, I watched last night (and my oldest is 2.5, I have no excuse) and I had to call in my husband and replay the snobby parents saying “And she STEPPED on the BALL!” (name that 80’s movie reference!!).

I liked it better than the first.

  2. Randi Says:

I LOVED the “I don’t dance” song! They had the sing-along yesterday and I was in front of the tv singing it (my children are too young to use as an excuse…dammit) and my husband looked at me, shook his head and walked off…

Also loved “The Music In Me” – good song…”Fabulous” was fun to…

    Definitel a good sequel…with an EXCELLENT life-lesson for teenie-boppers…except I didn’t like one line…

“I’m not worried about the future…I’m more worried about what my friends think of me”

Yeah – good reason to try drugs right there…

Loved Loved it! We were so excited..Who couldn’t love these movies??

  4. Juls Says:

It’s been on around 4 times in our house. I did catch all of it, but not all 4 times in its entirety. I thought it was I Won’t Dance. Anyhow, at first I hated that song and longed for an actual game. It grew on my by the 2nd time I saw it. I loved The Music in Me much better.

  5. Anne Glamore Says:

We had a night of it, too! I’m partial to “Fabulous,” but being the only female in the house, I’m alone in that opinion. Everyone loved the baseball dance, but my husband thought Troy dancing alone on the golf course was lame-O!

And the twins groaned at the kiss at the end, while Finn and I were cheering.

  6. Susan Says:

Only because of you did I watch the first and the second HSM movies. I’m not kidding. I was intrigued and had to know what it was all about. So, I recorded the movie this weekend and watched in in pieces when my husband was out of the house. I couldn’t have endured his ridicule.

I can’t believe you dissed Laguna Beach! OMG! Actually, it’s a shameful secret of mine, but I love that show.

I have NO idea what the High School Musical thing is about, but if it lets you bond with LilZ, then it clearly rocks.

  8. AJR Says:

I just saw on Ticketmaster – High School Musical ON ICE!

  9. mar Says:

I think HS2 was on non stop at our house this weekend on one tv or another. We all watched it together Friday night and then I would catch myself sitting down to watch it again the rest of the weekend when ever I walked by the tv. Guess that is why the house is a mess and the laundry didn’t get done.

We have yet to see it, but I am sure I will be watching it soon as my 10 year old loved the first one. I had to listen to the cd in the car over and over so I am a little burnt out by it all.

  11. angie Says:

We LOVED it in our house!! The kids have watched it no less than 3 to 4 times and we also DVR’d it so we have it to watch until it comes out on DVD.

I am partial to the first one, but the 2nd was really good. Some great songs and dance moves!!

We had a little party on Friday for the premiere. My kids thought it was sooo cool.

I totally earned cool mom points.

  12. Julie Says:

My daughter went to a HSM2 party and I was sort of sad I didn’t get to watch it with her for the first time. Needless to say I had plenty of other times later in the weekend – I think she watched it 4 or 5 times. I like HSM better I have to say – call me a purist! : )

And we have tickets for the HSM on Ice tour in Oct – can’t wait!!

  13. hello insomnia Says:

I totally faked my coolness by telling my 12-year-old niece that I couldn’t watch HSM2 because it was sold out to which she said, “How can that be possible when it was on the Disney Channel?” So much for trying.

  14. Michelle Says:

I didn’t see the second one – but really you are the reason that I sat still to watch the first one when it was on last week. It was like a really, really, really cheesy Grease (which I love). I wasn’t particularly a fan – it was a little painful. But if I had a tween child? It would totally be fun to watch with them.

  15. Jezer Says:

Loved it, EXCEPT there was just a teensy bit too much romance for my blood. I know, I know, I’m a prude.

But I’m like you, I’m going to have to watch it several more times to get a real feel for how it compares to HSM1.

  16. Fairly Odd Mother Says:

My 6yo is dying to see this but I think she is too young. Your verdic??? (I’ve also seen a clip of the baseball song and wanted to poke myself in the eye with a stick, but perhaps I wasn’t in the right frame of mind)

  17. nicole Says:

Have you seen the “I don’t Dance” video that they put together with the MLB? It’s awesome because they have various players popping up saying ‘I Don’t Dance” all through it interspersed with some awesome plays as well as clips of players dancing in the dugouts.

I loved the movie and the fact that I love the MLB made that video so awesome in my book.

  18. Susan Getgood Says:

I have been spared HSM so far — my son is only 7 — but I totally get the learning to like the things he does so you have things to share. I know more about Pokemon, Naruto, Ben 10 and the Avatar than I EVER thought I would :-)

  19. emily Says:

I am a big fan of the movies High School Musical and all the stars. I saw on http://www.HSM2Movie.com that there are some really cute pictures of Zac Efron!

Zac is so cute and I luv him so much..
