My grandmother (also had curly hair, only much, much curlier than mine) used to use vinegar to wash her hair. It stinks, but it makes your hair super soft. Apple vinegar doesn't stink as much though. I figured out a couple of years ago that my hair is way better when I just use conditioner. I found that out because I ran out of shampoo and kept forgetting to buy more.
