The Gray Snot Area

NikkiZ’s daycare has some clear black and white areas of sickness that mandate the child either (a) Not come to school or (b) Be picked up and taken home. If she has more than one diarrhea diaper, they call us to pick her up. If she starts running a fever, the call us to come get her. If she vomits, they call. If she has an unexplained rash anywhere other than the “diaper area” – they call.

She meets none of these conditions this morning. She is not running a fever. No diarrhea, vomiting, or rashes. So I’m sending her to school.

However – there is snot. And according to the “policy” – snot is not a Black and White issue. It’s a Clear and Green issue. If the snot is clear, it is probably related to allergies and not something they are concerned about. If it is Green, it is probably a sign of some sort of infection and/or contagious illness that should keep her home. Most of the time this is an easy one for us. NikkiZ’s snot is always clear because she’s got her daddy’s allergies.

But this morning? It wasn’t completely clear.

Now, it isn’t that sickly Green either, it just isn’t completely clear. It is clearish-green. No, it is greenish-clear. Yes. That’s it. Clear with a slight hint of green. The official Gray Area of the snot range.

Since I don’t really want to miss work (Mondays are my busiest days) I’m using this Gray Snot Area to justify sending her to school. They never sent home a paint sample type card marking where “safe” snot ends and “sick” snot begins – so I’m going to assume since it’s more clear than green, that she’s still safe for school. No fever. No rash. Just snot that is not perfectly clear. It’s my mucous loophole that is going to allow me to get some work done this morning.

I am officially out of the running for Mother of the Year, aren’t I?

(But I’m hoping to now be in the running for the TMI blog of the year!)

  1. PLease, I don’t keep my daughter home unless she is “acting” sick, ie she’s lethargic, and I know she needs the rest.

For anything else, I chance it and let them send her home.

I hope she feels better soon.

You definitely are still in the running for mother of the year.

Ew :P I was in the church nursery yesterday and it was all about the toddler snot – Nikki’s doesn’t sound that bad!

Why does childcare have to be such a pain in the ass? I mean kids get sick so often that is seems like there are weeks where you would need a “sick” babysitter.

And seriously…they send her home for a rash? River would get sent home at least once a week for that!

  5. Danell says:

A paint sample card. THAT would be hilarious! As would a photo ID of different poop types.

Not involving any of your blog stuff, but I found this while I was on snopes, instantly thought of you and your chikfilla thing, and since I don’t have one of those restuaraunts near me, figured I’d tell you.

It’s http://www.freechickenandcoke.com and you go in and get a coupon for a free sandwich and a coke. two of your favorite things.

Ok, I’m done. And I’m not spam. And I’m not a bot.

  7. Kris says:

And the snot thing, my son is clearish green too, whats going around right now??

Mine have been pretty healthy so far this year. Of course now that I have written that phrase for all the internets to see, I am sure they will both bring a pox upon our house.

I personally do not think snot is that big of an issue. Kids have snotty noses. No biggie.

Don’t stress. It will be okay. I am pretty sure you are still in the running for MOTY.

  9. Don’t feel bad Kim…I brought Li’l Foot to daycare last MOnday, and there was a new 14 month who just started that day who was already there…snot dripping down and thought to myself, “Self, you really should avoid this place like the plague today and take your daughter with you.” But alas I didn’t and now I’m paying for it…she’s got snot that would sink the Titanic and I sent her to daycare all last week and today too!!! And now I’ve got it!!! We’re just teaching our little ones to SHARE!!!

I want to buy one of them thar snot sample cards. Where can I get one? Maybe that could be a new business for you.

  11. Rachel says:

I’ve never worked with kiddos so I don’t know how a work place would deal with all the kiddo sicknesses. I mean I’ve got 3 and one of them always has something that would qualify for pick these guys up NOW. What does your work say about it?

  12. Rachel says:

Thanks for the Chick fil a coupon.

  13. TammyK says:

Wow!! I wouldn’t have a job if I had that daycare, lol. My kid would be missing at least a day a week according to all of their rules.

Good luck slipping the snot past them, lolol

  14. Rachel says:

If I spent as much time writing on my blog as I do reading yours maybe mine would be more successful. I hope shes feeling better.

  15. Nags says:

i actually had to look up the meaning of snot. we dont use it much in india u see :D

  16. Rachel says:

What would you use snot for?

Hi. I’m Kim.

This is my blog that I've been writing on since January, 2004. I call myself Zoot as it's a derivative of an old childhood nickname. I used to write about my struggles to have children, but eventually I succeeded and now, I write a lot about those kids. I don't use my kid's exact names simply because if someone Googles their very unique names in the future, I don't want them stumbling upon my entries about boobsweat. I mean, would you hire someone whose Mom writes openly about such topics? NO. YOU WOULD NOT.

I love taking pictures and carry my camera (almost) everywhere I go. This means you'll see a lot of photos on this site. I also periodically post recipes I like as I've been slowly (but surely) learning to cook and I like to share my discoveries. Finally? I'm an annoying pop culture fanatic so I'll periodically ramble about Hunger Games or the latest Parks and Recreation.

I hope you like it here. If not? Please don't tell me. I cry easily.
