Me and Ernie.

My charitable lunch caused me some not-so-charitable stomach issues yesterday. I don’t think it’s the fault of the restaurant, but more the fault of me who assumed that if my stomach is fine with one Ranch Dressing it should be fine with them all. Evidently that is not true. I have weird issues with some creamy sauces/dressings and I try to keep a mental list of what will make me sick and what won’t. Evidently Ranch is not a guaranteed inclusion on the “Go!” list and I should be more careful in assuming that.

As with any ailment, I decided I needed a soak in the tub to make me feel better. This is my go-to treatment for any and all aches/pains/diseases. Uterine cramps? Hot Bath. Headache? Hot Bath. Shin splints? Hot Bath. Ebola Virus? Hot Bath.

I’ve always felt sorry for people (like my husband) who just don’t appreciate the value of a good soak in the tub. We just have a regular bathtub, but I dream about one day having one of those fancy garden tubs. One big enough to sleep in, with jets and places for candles, and possibly a masseuse. Garden tubs come with those, right? A masseuse that just sits on the side and rubs your head while you soak? They don’t? Well – mine will.

I’ve even been known to get up in the middle of the night with symptoms of a sickness (congestion, coughing, leprosy) and soak in the tub while the rest of the world sleeps. I might even, on occasion, fake an illness just to get time alone with my hot bath and the latest Entertainment Weekly. I might do that. Then again, I might not. It depends on whether or not MrZ is reading this.

Baths, Diet Coke, and Pens. Three things I could not live without.

Those and my family, of course. I forgot about them.

I cannot live without my long hot baths. Because of the tight schedule we’ve had to run since Elizabeth started school, I only get my long soak once a week, but that’s as far as I will go in reducing the amount of time I spend just decompressing in the bathtub.

Water is the cure all for me too and I don’t do it often enough. Do you have favorite bath products?

I would have to add pads and post-it notes along with the pens.

Are you saying you could live without your camera? :-)

  3. Kyla says:

My husband is the same way! I’ll wake up at 2am and find him missing and he’s in the tub with some sort of ailment, usually allergies.

  4. Garden tub … WANT.

My remedy is long, hot showers by candlelight. Partially because I’m a shower grrl and partially because I don’t have a tub at my house. Just a shower … shower … STALL. *sob*

  5. leslie says:

Dislike tubs/baths INTENSELY. Soaking in my own muck form the day. BLECH. Long hot showers girl here, especially in winter.

I had no idea that I had married you. I mean, really, you are a clone of my husband if you aren’t him indeed. He takes a bath when he has diarrhea because he swears it helps. An ingrown toenail, take a bath, eye infection (just recently), take a bath. That man has been known to sleep in the tub many nights for 2 hour stretches. It is perfectly normal for him to be drawing a bath at 2 AM. Nevermind that there is not a door between our bedroom and the bathroom.

We have more than just a garden tub, we have a freakin’ round big ass tub and….he sleeps there…anytime he gets a chance!

I thought about you the other day.

No, not soaking in the tub (but maybe next time, hmm), but I was at office max getting something for work and I went and bought a GEL PEN for myself.

    Is this how it starts?

  8. Sabrina says:

So, PENS…not Penis. I had to read that 3 times before my brain saw “pens”.

  9. ferd says:

Me too. I think it is back to the womb.

  10. Tara says:

I always soak in the tub whenever I am sick. I don’t know what it is about hot water but it makes me feel better, maybe just more relaxed.

I like the “back to the womb” theory. I think there is something to that.

  11. Jenny H. says:

Our bath tub sucks. I can’t even remember the last time I had a bubble bath.

    Sigh.

I do love to lay in the bed, under the covers ad watch tv. Does that count?!

  12. Nicole says:

I am more of a shower person, but I do have a jacuzzi soaker tub which is quite nice.

Except the jets are noisy so using it at 2am (its in the master bathroom) is out of the question.

  13. Loralee says:

I am not opposed to a good soak when I feel really sore. But just to bathe? Not for me. I need a shower to feel really clean. Baths make me feel like I’m just soaking in my own ick. :S

Still…You have Diet Coke on your list so this makes pretty much anything else on the list acceptable. That your other option was pens just secures your awesomeness as far as I am concerned.

  14. sweetney says:

Entertainment Weekly makes everything all better!

  15. Steff says:

Hot bath, definitely a cure. I have the garden tub I just wish the water would stay hot longer – so with your regular sized tub you can let a little out and let more hot in and therefore get to soak longer cause you drain the hot water heater filling up the garden tub! :-)

  16. Krista says:

Finally, someone who understands! The bath is a wondrous cure. Of course, this cure is made all the more potent if you have something to read while you soak. Reading material is a MUST.

  17. Margie says:

I love baths! Long soaks, or even quick ones before work. Apart from the warmth feeling good for sore achey muscles, and the humidity helping the sinuses, I like that I can clip my hair up (it’s long) and not have to worry about getting it wet (even though it’s a lot thinner at 49 than it was at 29, it still takes a long time to dry!).

So I shower when I need to wash my hair (because trying to hold it in a flimsy shower cap is just frustrating), 2-3 times a week, and take a bath the other days.

And “sitting in your own ick?” If you bathe or shower regularly, your “ick” isn’t all that frightening, imo (unless maybe you work in a sewer, on an oil derrick, at a landfill, etc.).

    Rubber Ducky your the one…

Sadly, I only shower these days. Haven’t taken a bath in a really long time. It started with apartment living. I didn’t want to take a bath in a tub that had somebody else’s funk in it. Now we own a home and I still opt for a shower. Maybe once we renovate the bathroom.

  19. Nags says:

yeah, baths do work that way for me too. i guess its all in the mind. my stomach cramps certainly listen to me if i give it a shot of warm water..

  20. Rachel says:

Baths are overrated. They always get cold too fast for my taste and I hate normal tubs like mine because my knees are always out of the water.

  21. TammyK says:

I love taking a nice long hot bubble bath. But unfortunatly the tub in this house SUCKS!! It’s rather short and narrow and not very comfortable at all. So I rarely take a hot bath these days :( As a matter of fact… I miss them. I too dream of a garden tub with jets and a masseuse

  22. TammyK says:

Ohh and besides Entertainment weekly… there’s People, Us, and National Geographic! Those are all on my list of bathtime reads.

Hi. I’m Kim.

This is my blog that I've been writing on since January, 2004. I call myself Zoot as it's a derivative of an old childhood nickname. I used to write about my struggles to have children, but eventually I succeeded and now, I write a lot about those kids. I don't use my kid's exact names simply because if someone Googles their very unique names in the future, I don't want them stumbling upon my entries about boobsweat. I mean, would you hire someone whose Mom writes openly about such topics? NO. YOU WOULD NOT.

I love taking pictures and carry my camera (almost) everywhere I go. This means you'll see a lot of photos on this site. I also periodically post recipes I like as I've been slowly (but surely) learning to cook and I like to share my discoveries. Finally? I'm an annoying pop culture fanatic so I'll periodically ramble about Hunger Games or the latest Parks and Recreation.

I hope you like it here. If not? Please don't tell me. I cry easily.
