Dove, you did it again. You moved me with one of your commercials. I know it’s still all about marketing, but I appreciate it. I thank you for at least trying to market and promote and advertise in a way that makes me proud to use your products.
Now – continue to delurk!

That is such a cool commercial! See, I can look at it and delurk at the same time!
I hope you are having a fun delurkathon…
oh that is frickin awesome!!
That is awesome! Thanks for sharing. I might have to “steal” this, too. By the way, I went back and gave credit where credit was due. Oops.
That is an awesome commercial! Officially delurking to say that I love it, love your site, and I am really rooting for this pregnancy and your family. The world needs more redheaded little babies as cute as NikkiZ, that is for darn sure!
Wow. There ads always get to me.
I’m still working on this whole de-lurking thing. It’s a good think I don’t always try to comment on everything I read… I’d never ever step away from this computer!
Damn. That’s really awesome. Gave me chills. And I’ll continue to buy their products because of it.
I’m a delurking dweeb…I can’t watch the video right now because I’m on the train reading this post on my Treo/blackberry thingy and can’t get video…have to watch it later. have I taken the delurking too far when I can’t even comment for real? hahaha
Just an FYI – hate to burst your bubble, but Unilever (the parent company of Dove products) is on PETA’s list of “Companies that Test on Animals.” Maybe they’re going for karmic balance with this wonderful self-esteem campaign…either way, I thought you’d like to know since you are such an animal lover.
I love those Dove campaigns. I just wish they would actually air those awesome, much-needed messages in the U.S.
Delurking (for the most part) on this post. I love this ad.
I had nothing to contribute to the soup/bread bowl post, as I rarely eat soup, and have never had a bread bowl. That’s just wrong, I know.
I want you to know that you’re the reason, once I moved to the south, that I begged to try a Krispy Kreme. But you should have also warned me about the sweet tea and biscuits. At least the biscuits. The north doesn’t know how to make them.
I love their campaigns.
And only thick/creamy soups in bread bowls. End of discussion!
That IS a good one. LOVE!
The other good one is their “Evolution” ad, showing the photoshoot process. Stick “evolution” and “Dove” into YouTube and you’ll find it.
(Just a note: as fab as the real women campaign is, it’s interesting to know that the company who designed the campaign (Ogilvy) also does the advertising for Lynx deodorant – all the advertising for which objectifies woman as little more than sex objects. I would never dream of suggesting that the makers don’t believe their message, or that’s it merely a very clever marketing campaign, but…)
Beautiful…I love this add. It epitomizes what I’m trying to teach my kids. Thanks for sharing!
Delurking to say thanks for putting that on your blog! I’d heard there was a new Dove message out there, but hadn’t gotten around to seeing it til now. Wow.
I would just like to say that you did a kick ass job of commenting today, everywhere I went I saw a comment from you and also thank you so much for commenting on my blog i seriously think you and the few other people who commented are the only ones who have ever read it! Anyways I’m a huge dork and thanks for making me feel special lol
i lurve dove
wow! thats so neat.. love it..
had to check it without the audio cuz of lack of headphones at the moment..
That commercial makes me so sad. What have we DONE to our daughters? This is why I totally refuse to shop at Victoria’s Secret, btw. I think their TV commercials are soft porn and do not belong on TV, especially during the hours that kids watch TV.
I comment all the time here. But I’m commenting again on delurking day.
Fabulous! Thanks Zoot.
you are funny…i also find it hard to de-lurk for any significant amount of time…and luv the commerical.
THAT WAS AWESOME! man, where was that commercial when i was growing up…thank god my daughter loves PBS.
WOW. Talk about powerful.
I’m so afraid for the little girl I’ve got growing in here!
De-lurking to say that Unilever (Dove’s parent company) markets those feel-good ads real beauty ads in the US and then sells skin bleaching cream to Indian women abroad while marketing “fair as beautiful” in a country with all sorts of issues related to said practice that are too complicated and numerous to go into in a blog comment. There was a big article in NYT business about it recently. I would love to swear off their soap but I have sensitive skin and I’m on it per my dermatologist. The minute I find something that doesn’t cause a scaly rash, I’m throwing them all out.
Anyway, I’ve never been able to look at their ads the same way again.
@monkey – I looked it up and the NYT article is here:
http://tinyurl.com/2ncnen
It says this: “Avon, L’Oréal, Ponds, Garnier, the Body Shop and Jolen are selling lightening products and all of them face stiff competition from a local giant, Fair and Lovely, a Unilever product that has dominated the market for decades.”
It sounds like Unilever is not the only product like that. It does sound disgusting, but I wanted to make sure I hunted down the article in case other readers were curious. It’s not just Unilever,
” ‘Half of the skin care market in India is fairness creams,’ said Didier Villanueva, country manager for L’Oréal India, and 60 to 65 percent of Indian women use these products daily. L’Oréal entered this specific market four years ago with Garnier and L’Oréal products, but so far has a small market share, he said.”
And then later:
“The All India Democratic Women’s Association has been monitoring advertisements since the 1990s and gets particularly angry with ads that convey the message “if she is not fair in color, she won’t get married or won’t get promoted,” said Manjeet Rathee, a spokeswoman for the association’s media group. The current crop of television ads for fairness creams are “not as demeaning” as ones in the past, she said.”
So – just wanted to provide more information. It sounds like Unilever’s products have the most disgusting advertising, but they aren’t the only ones marketing the same idea: fair skin is better. And maybe the outcry has made a difference since it seems some agree the current ads are better. Also – it looks like Unilever has begun marketing the same product to men – so it’s not just women.
Anyway – just wanted to make sure all of the information was there in case anyone wanted it. Thanks for motivating me to research it Monkey.
my plane didn’t crash, so i thought i’d celebrate by commenting again.
whee!
I would have linked back to my original post that discussed the particular article but in light of the recent controversy about leaving site addresses and increasing google rankings I decided against it.
I am, myself, Indian and have faced the issue of skin tone (in that my mom is very fair and my dad is not and I have a lifetime of “too bad you got your mom’s beautiful features and your dad’s yucky skin tone” behind me) and the skin bleaching creams in India disgust me. I recall at least a couple of sites that discuss desi issues linking back to my post.
Unfortunately I can’t swear off unilever products entirely because my family and I, despite wonderful health otherwise, have horrible dermatalogical issues so I would look like a lizard if I were to use anything other than Dove. I’ve even had to give up perfumes (recently) and like my mom, will eventually have to give up most makeup other than lipstick and kohl. So I use Dove right now but it doesn’t change my opinion that their real beauty and image challenging ads are a lot of hot air and nothing more than clever marketing. And that’s okay, I’m very business oriented and appreciate marketing but I don’t get all excited about them the way I used to before NYT Business published that article. To me it’s just a good ad campaign, like those Vodka ads.
But let me just say I really like your site and have been enjoying lurking for the past few months. I found you through Cagey of Rancid Raves and Stephanie of Completely Irrelevant. Congratulations on your recent good news-I hope everything is smooth sailing.
Monkey
They have been playing that ad all day on TV. It’s a good one.
Holy Crap!! Wow I love’d this video. So True and to the point!! WTG Dove!!!
