But it’s not the biggest one this year, which is remarkable. The biggest one was at the Topsfield fair, and weighed 1689 lbs. Now THAT is a pumpkin. We went to see it. Frightening would be the word I’d use to describe it. And we used to go to the Half Moon Bay fair all the time and there were some mighty big pumpkins there. But this baby? You could move in and set up housekeeping.
Okay, I was flipping through channels a few months ago, and landed on PBS. Some woman was talking about her “punkins” and how she named hers Shasta. She said raising a pumpkin is just like taking care of a baby, and she cries when it’s time to cut them off the vine - and one year! the mice! oh my lands!
Then there was this segment where a guy was rubbing his pumpkin down with a soft cloth and some sort of oil. The sun was setting behind them and the music was all sorts of smooth jazz romance. Then he was talking about how raising pumpkins was so “intimate.”
In short, that show was freaking awesome and I am going to watch the whole thing the next time it comes on.
