Naptime
Category: Sometimes I'm Krazee |

I came home from work and passed out. As in, I walked through the door, walked to the bedroom, fell on my bed full clothed, and passed out for over two hours. And I probably could have slept for days more. Man - I love naptime. I want to marry naptime. I want to have naptime’s babies.

It is now painfully apparent that I did not sleep as long as I needed.

Are you a nap person? Do you nap? Can you nap? What circumstances allow for a good nap and what circumstances does a nap actually make you feel worse? Sometimes I take a nap and feel worse, usually if it’s not long enough. Or if I’m so tired a nap does no good. But even then? I’d still make out with the nap for at least a little while.

Sunday afternoons are perfect for napping.

Also, back in college, my roommates and I instituted “nap time” to be between 4 and 6PM — after class and before dinner. Actually, I guess it could more accurately be described as “pajama time,” because sometimes we didn’t nap, but rather just lied on the couch, ate cheese, hummus, and pita, and watched Trading Spaces.

A bad nap is when I nap too late in the day and it screws with my regular sleep schedule. Then I’m too tired the next day, which can set off a whole bad napping/sleeping cycle.

Mmmmm… Naps. I can take a nap almost anytime, anywhere. I don’t even care if it makes me feel worse- the act of napping is so delicious that it’s worth it.

  3. kimblahg Says:

Oh heck yeah I’m a nap person. It is just part of who I am and if I don’t nap on a semi-regular basis, I get very cranky and fuzzy-headed. I read that Einstein required a lot of sleep too so I think it just means I’m a genius.

  4. nanette Says:

Yup, weekend naps are the best. Post-work naps are nice, but they throw off my sleep schedule so I try to avoid those.

  5. Gwen Says:

I’m not typically a napper but when I can, it’s awesome.

My favorite is the bed nap. When you get back in bed you’re serious.

  6. alli Says:

Hooray for naps! I took an hour long one today… and the definition of Sunday afternoon is nap time.

  7. Audrey Says:

I’m a big fan of naps, but my husband loves them even more. The man could sleep for a week if I let him! (Okay, maybe not that long, but certainly most of a day.) I agree with Gwen: bed naps — under the covers and everything — are the very best.

  8. Mindy Says:

I can’t take naps. They make me bitchy. It doesn’t matter if it’s 10 minutes or one hour. Naps just do not work for me. I am a little bitter about that because the concept sounds really good.

  9. Maxine Dangerous Says:

I am all about the nap. It’s like a religious thing. There’s nothing quite so delicious as getting back in bed, covering up, and falling asleep for an undetermined amount of time. I often wake up three or four hours later and wander around my apartment the rest of the day like “F*** yeah…” :)

BTW, I nap on the weekend. I’m not unemployed. :)

Okay, now I want to get in bed and it’s not yet 7 pm. Poo on “laundry” and “dinner” and “responsibility.” ;)

When I am pregnant, the nap is as important as taking my prenatal vitamin. Otherwise, I never nap. I’m one of those people who can’t sleep sitting up so that rules out chairs, cars, airplanes, etc. I pretty much have to be laying down in bed to sleep. And I literally am unable to nap unless I’m pregnant. The downside being that a pregnant nap almost NEVER makes me feel better. Almost always makes me feel worse. Still, if I don’t take one, then I turn into a homocidal maniac. I swear, I’d spend my entire pregnancy in bed if I could get away with it.

  11. Katie (The Yap) Says:

Sorry. You can’t marry naps. He’s already mine. My body needs a nap every single day without exception. Sometimes I push through and stay awake, but then I am mightily pissy.

I’m a full-time mom now, so I can indulge myself, but when I was pregnant and working full time I did exactly what you described. Every day I came home from work and passed out. And every lunch break you could find me in the backseat of my Ford Explorer, with three pillows a blanket and an alarm clock.

  12. Katie (The Yap) Says:

Also, a nap has never, EVER made me feel worse. Ever. I always feel better!

  13. Nina Says:

I LOVE love LOVE naps!!! I don’t usually have any trouble going back to sleep, sometimes for just an hour, other times longer. It’s funny- when you’re young and you ‘have to’ take a nap, it’s like torture or a punishment or something. But then you get older and it’s like a luxury! LOL.

  14. Fraulein N Says:

I love a good nap. Day nap, night nap. Couch nap, bed nap. Post-work-fully-clothed nap, serious-in-my-jammies-under-the-covers nap. Hour nap, entire afternoon nap. I don’t care. Me and naps got a thang goin’ on.

  15. ferd Says:

Naps are preordained. A must. Please indulge. You are pregnant, not that it is a requirement for a nap. It is a good reason. Do it.

  16. Kenna Says:

I want to be a napper, I dream of being a napper but alas my body refuses to nap. My mother told me that I would not nap as a child either….damn hyperactiveness…I cannot even sleep past 6:30 no matter how late I went to bed..makes it hard on vacations. I average 5 hours a night if I am lucky and come back even more tired. Oh yeah, CONGRATS on the pregnancy also! I am keeping you in my thoughts.

  17. maryjo Says:

Sometimes I nap… mostly thought I can’t. I don’t just sleep for an hour… a nap for me has to be at lest 3 hours. I love e some bed naps… those rock!!

  18. Mitch McDad Says:

I’d give my left “you know what” to be able to take naps. I love them!!!

  19. mdv Says:

Since I have insomnia, I think all sleeping is good. :-)

  20. Inalelori Says:

I wish I could take naps, I LOVE the idea of naps! But they make me feel almost sick when I wake up, all tired and confused. Last time I took a nap was in September and when the Mister woke me up less than an hour later (as requested by me) I rushed up thinking I had slept an entire night and couldn’t figure out why or how on earth I was fully dressed. It got my heart pounding and left me feeling like I’d had some sort of anxiety attack for a couple of hours afterwards. But man do I wish I could do naps.

  21. Meems Says:

I love naps, I live for naps. Of course I do since I work graveyard shifts. I love a cloudy day, that makes the napping even better.

  22. Kathy Says:

Yay! I love naps. I get up early, so I take sleep anywhere I can get it. (My neighbors aren’t letting me sleep at night. Grrr. Lucky them they can wake up at noon. I have to nap or I’d go insane. )

  23. stacey Says:

I love napping. I have to be tired enough for one however. If I am just kinda tired it isn’t that satisfying, and usually is only like a 20 min toss and turn fest. If I am just wiped out? I will fall asleep for several hours and not move at all. Those are the best. I have the bad habit of having the TV on when napping, sometimes that has an effect on the nap quality.

  24. Ashley & Family Says:

I love naps! I only work half days on Friday so when I get home it’s what I do until the kids get home. There is absolutly nothing better than a cold dark room to nap in while the kids aren’t home :)

  25. Moogie Says:

I usually don’t nap unless I’m sick. Quite often if I take a nap, they make me feel worse, plus I have a hard time sleeping at night.

But sometimes…..ah, the nap is just what the doctor ordered.

  26. Amber Says:

I really envy you, because I can’t seem to nap at all, no matter how tired I am. I have to be in my own bed, and it has to be bedtime, or I’ll just wander around like a zombie. (Actually, I do that most of the time, though, so it’s not such a big deal.)

  27. Hot Librarian Says:

Love naps, could be professional napper and would be workaholic. Never get to nap anymore unless baby is napping… which she is now. Gottagobye.

  28. Jody Says:

My favorite nap is the hoodie nap. I put on my favorite hoodie and put the hood up and snooze on the couch. I nap way better with my ears being covered, I’m not sure why since my house is usually pretty quiet. I think I just love how snuggled down I feel. The husband is a good napper too, but isn’t a fan of the hoodie nap. His loss.

  29. Katy Says:

I love naps but since I can only nap when Meghan does and she will only nap for 30 minutes at the most, I just feel loads worse afterwards. Now I just go to bed early instead.

  30. Average Jane Says:

I LOVE naps! I’m usually in for really long naps, like 2-3 hours, but lately I’ve begun to be able to achieve and appreciate the 20-30 minute nap. In fact, my company let us go home early today and I’m giving serious thought to taking a nap later, just because I can.

  31. Takin Chances Says:

I can nearly nap on demand. And don’t be trying to marry naptime because I called him a long time ago!!

Naps are one of my top 5 favorite things EVER!!!

BEST conditions for naps are: rainy days, sunny days, cold days, hot days, cool days, windy days, morning, afternoon, sometimes evenings, right after meals, anytime the cats are on me, when I don’t want to think anymore.

  32. Margie Says:

Not a napper–except maybe when I’m sick. I can’t remember if I was able to nap during pregnancy; it’s been over 17 years! But I do remember being pregnant and having trouble staying awake during an afternoon class. I was also working full time; taking that class was a mistake, but it’s not like I needed it to graduate. I was working for a university, so could take a few credits per semester for free.

Even as a kid, I’d be put down for a “nap” and not be able to sleep. I’m sure I must have taken them when I was really young, but at age 4? No way! Even now it takes me a while to fall asleep. Husband can pretty much be asleep as soon as he gets between the covers.

And if I DO take a nap? Disoriented. Often grouchy or just out of sorts. Just not worth it for me.

I’m better off taking a brisk walk in the fresh air if I start feeling the afternoon blahs.

If I have a long plane ride–which tends to disrupt your sleep and body clock anyway–I’ll try to nap, just because flights are so darn boring that a nap is a way to pass the time, as long as you have a neck pillow so you don’t wake up feeling yucky from that.

  33. Jem Says:

I agree with the commenter that said Sunday afternoons = good naps. Any other time and I wake up feeling worse :( Unless I sleep naturally until I wake up…but then its always like 5 hours later which means its time for bed, and then I can’t sleep because I’ve just BEEN asleep…

  34. TammyK Says:

I am a major nap person. Naps are my friend. Naps and I tried to get married once but it just didn’t work out because even though I love naps I didn’t want to nap 24/7… and well he didn’t understand, lol But we see each other as often as my life allows, lol
