I prefer to call it the “Friday morning crap-for-all”
Category: NikkiZ | 46 Comments »

The Top 40 station we have locally has a Friday Morning Free-For-All every week and they let callers call in and request whatever song they want. Mostly, the requests are from the 80s. That’s fine! I grew up in the 80s, I can hang with that. But why, why, why must the callers request the suckiest 80s music ever? Bah. Every Friday I spend the drive bitching to LilZ about how he should not judge the entire decade of music based on Falco’s “Rock Me Amadeus.” Who calls and requests that song every Friday? HOW DO I MAKE THEM STOP?

LilZ started contemplating the fact that when he is my age people will be calling in music that’s playing on the radio now. So, we started discussing what songs he did not want people to call in and request. He got depressed thinking about it. Heh. Welcome to my world, sucka’.

Today NikkiZ turns 2. The age difference is great enough between her and LilZ that their “generation” of music will not be the same. He’ll be feeling old hearing his favorite songs playing during “Retro Lunch” for the first time when she is old enough to be the kid bitching that the stations plays crappy music at lunch time. This depressed him. It should. I don’t want to be the only one feeling old, dammit.

LilZ likes to look at the future and imagine things like, NikkiZ attending his college graduation when she’s in 7th grade. Or possibly being a bridesmaid in his wedding when she’s in high school. He wonders if he’ll have kids already when she graduates from high school. Will he bring his kids to visit her in college like we did recently for MrZ’s sister? (Who, happens to be separated by the exact same amount of years.) It’s a neat thing to consider and one of the many unexpected cool things about having kids 11 years apart.

That and having a built-in babysitter, of course. That part is the best.

Happy 2nd Birthday, NikkiZ! please stop growing up, because every year that you get older that means my baby gets older, too. :)

  2. Randi Says:

Happy Birthday NikkiZ!! My children are 3 1/2 yrs apart, and it’s wierd enough for me knowing that my son will be in third grade when my daughter’s in kindergarden!

  3. tiffany Says:

    yay, nikkiz!
(although, i’ve always thought that birthdays should involve more celebration of the mother who, you know, actually brought life into the world. i always get my mom flowers on my birthday…it’s too late for me to send you a present, though.)

    Happy birthday, baby junior!

And as for you, missy, I’ll have you know that I think “Rock Me, Amadeus” is one of the greatest songs of all time.

  5. Angie Says:

Happy Birthday to NikkiZ! Two – what a great age. I just love the pictures of Lilz and NikkiZ – he truly seems like the sweetest kid….you are so blessed! Must be the awesome mothering, right?? Of course, we need to keep reminding ourselves of that. Everything else is ‘our fault’, why not the good stuff too?

    Have a great day.

I live in Vienna, where Falco was from. Austrians are VERY proud that an Austrian actually made it to #1 on the charts in America, even if it was way back in the 8o’s, so can you imagine how often they play that song here (along with every other Falco song)? And that’s without anyone calling in to request it!

My youngest sister is 7 years younger than me and it makes me feel very old that she is turning 18 next year, because up until now i felt like 18 was just yesterday, but now I have no choice but to admit that it was seven years ago…where does the time go???

    And happy birthday, NikkiZ!

  7. Kathy Says:

    Happy Birthday NikkiZ!

My brother and I are 11 years apart. Which made for a big difference as he grew up. He’s in college now and the age gap is still big obviously, but it seems smaller somehow. It’s kind of nice to see his life from this perspective.

  8. Jenny H. Says:

Happy Birthday, NikkiZ! I can’t believe she is already two! She is lucky to have such a good big brother.

And who in the hell likes Falco? For real. I am almost afraid to ask what other horrible songs they play.

  9. Stephanie Says:

    Happy 2nd birthday, NikkiZ!

My brother and I are 7.5 years apart, so the year I graduated high school, he graduated elementary school (5th grade), and the year I graduated law school, he graduated high school. He just turned 20 last month, which suddenly made me feel very old… I mean, I remember when that kid was born like it was yesterday.

Oh, and my parents definitely took advantage of having the built-in babysitter too.

  10. Dabney Says:

    Happy Birthday, NikkiZ.

And I am sorry, but Rock Me Amadeus is a kickass song.

  11. Heather B. Says:

Your daughter and I are exactly 22 years apart. Now I feel old. Actually what is really scaring me is that I’m old enough to be her mother.

On that note, I hope you both have a glorious day.

  12. Takin Chances Says:

Happy, happy birthday NikkiZ!!! You kick serious toddler butt!

  13. Average Jane Says:

    Happy birthday to NikkiZ!

Wanna know what’s worse than Falco’s “Rock Me Amadeus”? Taco’s “Puttin’ on the Ritz.” You’re welcome!

  14. Belinda Says:

Awww. Bella is obsessed about “when she grows up.” I loved this post!

  15. Maribeth Says:

LilZ you Rock! What a great brother!!!

  16. ladybug_mjj Says:

Happy birthday, NikkiZ!!! Built-in babysitters are awesome, I was 12 years older than my youngest sibling, and mom used it! My two are seven years apart, my 9-yr-old is still too young to stay home alone, never mind be in charge of the toddler. I’ve thought about where #1 will be when #2 hits certain milestones, and vice-versa. Most of my mental meanderings revolve around paying for school.

  17. Bethiclaus Says:

I’m kind of mortified to say it now, but I think I might be the one calling in to request “Rock Me, Amadeus.” My love for Falco is a forbidden love and I like it. Also, I like to rock out in German. It makes me happy.

  18. Janet Says:

    Happy Birthday NikkiZ!

  19. Kathy Says:

    Happy Birthday NikkiZ!

I always thought the reason that most people request such god-awful song is that they really don’t know any others exist. I mean, if you had Falco (or MC Hammer — child of the 90s here) soundtracking all your memories, there would be an inevitable emotional attachment to it.

  20. Gwen Says:

    Happy berfday, NikkiZ!!

  21. Beth Says:

Aww, happy second birthday to NIkkiZ! Two is fabulous!

My son is ten and a half years older than his sister, and thirteen years older than his brother. It’s been a fantastic age difference.

  22. wordnerd Says:

Awww – Happy Birthday to the cutest two-year-old in the blogosphere! My “baby” turned 13 Sunday. Don’t ask.

  23. shokufeh Says:

    Happy Birthday, NikkiZ!
I am 10.5 years older than one of my brothers and he graduated from high school the same summer I got married. In college, he got a trip to Hawaii to come see my MrMan. Wait a minute, what did I get out of the relationship, other than memories of a cute little kid? ;)

  24. Maxine Dangerous Says:

Happy birthday, NikkiZ! :) Considering I just read your birth story about three weeks ago, you’ve grown considerably! ;)

    Happy Birthday NikkiZ!

He plays dolls with her? What a kick-ass big brother!

  28. Dawn Says:

    Happy Birthday to NikZ!

    FUN

My sister and I are ten years apart and my son and my sister are ten years apart…to round it off- my son and next son are ten years apart…
my sister went and goofed it up though…she didnt wait ten years. (only made it 7)
The generational gaps are amazing to watch play out.

I also LOVE the debate when they REMAKE a song and my 20 year old son thinks its NEW!!!

  29. The Muse Says:

My little sister was in 8th grade when she came to my college graduation, just 4 years ago. It was fun – I was about to embark on the real world, and she was going into high school.

Now, she’s about to graduate from high school in a few short months (!!!), and I’m finally happy in a job that I love.

And one other thing… I, too, was the built-in babysitter when my sister was younger. I spent a lot of my teenage years resenting her for that (my parents both worked, so I was limited in how much time I was away from her and the house)… now, although I wish that I’d had more of my years to go out and be crazy and do stupid things with my friends, I’m thankful that we got to spend so much time together.

Especially now, when she’s got her own social life, and I feel like I never talk to her anymore.

  30. Audrey Says:

    Happy Birthday NikkiZ!

  31. Wacky Mommy Says:

Happy birthday, Little Missy. You are adorable. And how lucky you are to have such a cool big brother.

  32. chris Says:

I love watching the relationship between my oldest and youngest. He adores his youngest brother almost the same way a parent adores their own child. And since they are 10 years apart in age their relationship isn’t burdened by typical sibling issues.

  33. Tiffani Says:

    Happy Birthday, NikkiZ! Have fun!

P.S. I love “Rock Me Amadeus” but it’s probably because it brings back memories of the boy I had a crush on in 8th grade. Ah, the good old days! Ha!

  34. lisa-marie Says:

    Happy Birthday, NikkiZ!!

  35. Moogie Says:

Happy birthday NikkiZ. I can NOT believe that it’s been two years already. It just doesn’t seem possibl!

  36. Brenda Says:

Happy Birthday NikkiZ! Hope you have a great one!

My brother is 18 years younger so we are a whole generation apart. I was leaving to go to colloege when he was starting daycare. I’m more like an aunt to him than a sister at times.

  37. Kristabella Says:

    Happy Birthday NikkiZ!

  38. Fraulein N Says:

Happy Birthday NikkiZ! I love the look on her “brudda’s” face in that picture.

  39. stace Says:

Oh my goodness! I completely forgot it was her ACTUAL birthday today!! Holy!! I am SO sorry!! I am such a bad, bad aunt!! The girls are going to kill me! Maybe she’ll let me steal her away and bribe her forgiveness with copious amounts of sugar, chips and soda????

  40. TammyK Says:

    Happy 2nd Birthday NikkiZ.

  41. Elizabeth Says:

Happy belated birthday, NikkiZ! We are going through the killer “terrible twos” here, and Kaitlyn isn’t even two yet! But I’ve heard her do that mocking thing. I like when she picks up my cell phone and “yells” at my husband. “Dah dah? Blah blah blah BLAH, Dah Dah” It’s really funny :)

  42. stacey Says:

wow…I can’t believe she is 2 already!! Happy belated birthday!!

  43. Jem Says:

    Happy Birthday NikkiZ!!! :)

  44. Rachel Says:

My first is about to turn 4 years old. I don’t know where the time goes.

  45. canape Says:

My Bird and my stepdaughter will be 11 years apart. It’s been really cool having her be interested and excited about the pregnancy. Except when she said, “I know how that happened. You know. You and Daddy.”

Okay okay. Thanks for sharing, my darling stepdaughter.

    Happy belated birthday NikkiZ!
