This post is in response to my daily prompt posted here
I’ve thought long and hard about the best way I’ve ever spent my money. My first thought was rather materialistic and uninspirational: TiVo. I mean, it has changed our lives. We can now ALL watch the shows we want to watch when we’re all ready to watch them. It’s the most amazing thing ever. But I decided even I’m not that obsessed with television to call it the best dollar I’ve ever spent.
I considered the noble ways I’ve spent my money and the charities I’ve donated to. Unfortunately, I don’t actually know first hand how that money was spent, so it’s hard for me to get behind those ideas.
I’ve thought about amazing vacations and romantic dates. I’ve considered great hair cuts and cute shoes. I even spent a few minutes thinking about the amazing food I’ve eaten in my life and how, in fact, some of those meals are frequent participants in my dreams.
But - my final answer is this: the Books-A-Million gift card I used on the first three Harry Potter books. I first wrote about it here so I don’t need to go through the story of how I came to buy the books. However, I will elaborate on why it was the best purchase I ever made. First? They’re damn good books. That’s the easy reason. But the real reason would be this: If I listed some of my fondest memories in the last several years, some of my happiest nights or wonderful outings with my family and/or friends, there would be a huge majority of them related to Harry Potter. There have been several midnight book releases and several midnight movie tickets. It is the one series of books that LilZ, MrZ, and I have all read. I just feel like, for such an offhanded purchase, it brought so much fun into my life as a Mom.
What about you?

Me tooo!
I love me some Harry! I wish it would never end! Now I have to go think about the best money I have ever spent!
My best investment was my new computer. It’s so much better than the old one (although I hate Vista) and I’ll soon be using it to look for a new job!
I “impulse” bought a stuffed rabbit for my little girl the easter that she was three months old. It had a little pink robe on and I thought it would be funny to put it on the baby. Well she fell in love with the thing around her 15th month and has been obsessed with it ever since. That rabbit is her one true link to happiness, and comfort. Its amazing that somthing that I spent way to much money on and thought it was silly at the time has become almost like another member of the family. Its a wonderful rabbit.
I would have to agree. It has brought me so much closer to my oldest son, being able to discuss the story with him, and taking him to the movies and book releases.
Great post, Zoot!
Let’s see…my best purchase would probably be the house we’re in now. It’s big enough not only for me and my girls, but the new additions of a husband and 2 step-sons. It brings smiles to my face (and the occasional “QUIT JUMPING”) when I hear all of them playing upstairs.
I love this post.
Like @Juliesmama, I bought a Madeline doll and a few of the books for my niece when she was born. She fell in love with the doll and would carry it everywhere with her.
My best purchase would have to be my MacBook. It changed my view on computers and I will never ever ever in a million years go back to a PC.
On a more materialistic note, my Marc Jacobs handbag. Oh my gosh, it is made from the softest leather in the entire universe and I love it to pieces!

Hm. A three-way tie between:
1. My (2) college educations - paid for 100% by myself.
2. My divorce from my first husband.
3. The house I live in now. Possible only because of 1 and 2 - but has brought my husband and son and I so much joy.
The best purchase I ever made was my house. No doubt about it. And I sold it at just the right time too. Woot.
I have to agree with Ree though, and say that my divorce was also money well spent, however, my dad paid for that, so I didn’t spend the money really.
Then, my piano would also be on the list, but since it’s financed right now, I guess I technically haven’t spent all that money either yet.
My degrees and my house. Definitely my house - it’s my first. I’ve been there almost three years now and I still marvel that it’s mine. Mine, mine, mine, all mine. A little piece of the universe that belongs to me.
I would say that is money VERY, very well spent. You can’t put a price on those kinds of memories!!
Also, you and littleZ are too damn cute - I love that picture
Best purchase? what about best use of money. purchases i can think of some, but the best use of money for me was cashing in my 401k and moving across country. best thing that i have ever done.
Best money ever spent? Hands down, the infertility treatments that gave me my perfect, amazing daughter after five long years of trying. Worth every dollar and then some. (Which explains why we are in the process of forking over more barrels of money to try for another one!)
This is a fantastic post! I love things like that that the whole family can be a part of. I have been trying to think of a purchase that I have made like that but haven’t come up with anything good. I guess you will need to start working on NikkiZ early to make sure she gets in on all the fun.
I have been freaking out ALL DAY! My husband fixed our computer about half an hour ago. I was seriously distraught over missing the first day of NaBloPoMo. I have tons of ideas and cannot wait to begin.
We just finished moving into our new house. And we had a butt-load ‘o’ the drama. But, we are in now. And I have mah internets.
Life is good.
if i had to answer that question, i would probably say my imac is the best money i’ve ever spent. but harry potter is at least in the top 5. if i had kids? it would be number 1, probably.
i so want to be part of this but am chickening out.. work is hectic!
and btw, that link is not wokring for me
!
are haircuts that expensive?!
This is a great post! I also love Harry Potter… but my family isn’t into it as deeply as I am. lol.
oh, girl…..this brought a few tears to my eyes. i think it’s the best thing you ever purchased, too. i have you to thank for all the many wonderful and beautiful memories they have brought me as well.
