And you, and you, and you…

This is in response to the writing prompt here.

When we went grocery shopping this weekend and all of the Halloween decorations that NikkiZ loves to look at were replaced with Christmas trees. This normally pisses me off and I grumble about how no one even thinks about Thanksgiving anymore, we just jump straight to Christmas. But Saturday? I was thrilled. I was able to take that opportunity to start introducing NikkiZ to the concept of Christmas. I explained that Santa Claus will bring her lots of toys for Christmas, since that is the reason for the season. Right?

This was especially important because Santa Claus will be at the Botanical Gardens Members function Thursday night and I kinda want her to be a little prepared. So, we talked and talked about who Santa Claus was and what he would do. I’m sure she’ll be terrified, but at least the words will be familiar, even if the face is scary.

However, she got so wrapped up in the word “toys” she kept saying, “ME! TOYS!” all day Saturday. So, I had to explain to her that everyone gets toys. I would start naming members of family and kids in her class. She finally started understanding and now when you mention Christmas she’ll list out everyone in the vicinity and say, “Mimi gets toys, Grandpa gets toys, Brother gets toys…” and so on. It’s actually quite cute. And it reminds me that Christmas is so much more awesome for me as a Mom than it ever was for me as a kid.

That is way too cute. I like her thinking though. Everybody gets toys. :) Have you shown her any pictures of Santa yet? Maybe that might help her when she actually sees him because she’ll have an idea of what he looks like. (??) I can’t wait to hear how she reacts. And I agree with you 100%. I enjoy Christmas much more now that I am a mom.

  2. Juls says:

Yup. The memories are so precious when they are first learning of Santa and Christmas. Enjoy it. It whizzes past.

  3. mdv says:

Adorable. I want toys for Christmas too.

Ditto what Moogie said. Perhaps, you can show her photos of LilZ with Santa.

  4. Stacey says:

Aww that is cute. I am excited to shower my 6 month old niece with presents at Christmas, but I do realize she won’t really get it for just a little longer. I saw Christmas displays before Halloween….and it just SCARES me. I can’t afford Christmas right now!!

  5. Ida says:

I agree. I love Christmas way more as a parent and I LOVED it as a kid. There is just something about seeing the magic through your childs eyes that make it that much better.

  6. Ida says:

Oh, my gosh!!! My gravatar worked!! That’s the first time.

  7. It probably wouldn’t bother me if Christmas lasted 4 months – I love Christmas! But I also LOVE Thanksgiving!

  8. Last year was the first year Grace didn’t freak out when we visited Santa Claus – she’s 7! Hopefully Jackson won’t be that way, we better start preparing.

That’s so cute. I hope she’s still excited when she sees Santa. Just remind her that he’s the guy who BRINGS the toys.

This ought to be our best Christmas ever! I love the holidays, but Christmas in particular.

  11. Jenny H. says:

I can’t wait for the look on their faces when they see what is under the tree for them on Christmas morning!

  12. Jenny H. says:

Particularly Quinn, he is two now. So it ought to be awesome!

  13. Heather says:

I always get a little bitter because Christmas usurps my birthday ;) (Nov 25th) But I think maybe this year I’ll just try to enjoy all the magic regardless!

  14. Kathy says:

I come from a family who doesn’t really exchange gifts, at least now that everyone is grown and there’s no little kids anxiously awaiting Santa, but I love Christmas shopping for other people or their children. That being said, Christmas is coming way to early this year. I’m trying to catch the holiday spirit, but it’s a little too soon for me.

  15. Becky says:

Christmas is so much fun with little ones, isn’t it?

  16. Kristabella says:

Seriously, it is too early for Christmas stuff. A local radio station has started the non-stop Xmas music already. That’s a tad on the ridiculous side if you ask me.

I definitely enjoy Christmas more now with my nephews and niece. It’s so much fun for them!

  17. Dirka says:

I’m excited for Christmas this year because we’re hosting the festivities in our new house!

  18. Nags says:

I love the way she calls lilz ‘brother’

  19. TammyK says:

I adore Christmas. It’s my favorite Holiday. It shares a slot with Halloween in my book. lol. But I am very tired of having the holiday rammed down my throat before it should be. This year our stores started putting out their Christmas stuff on September 24th!! That’s insane! I remember when Halloween used to have it’s own place in the limelight and on November 1st …then the Thanksgiving and Christmas stuff would come to town.

  20. Jenny H. says:

I am agreeing with TammyK! Let’s celebrate one holiday before moving on to the next!

She will be the cutest elf evah.

Hi. I’m Kim.

This is my blog that I've been writing on since January, 2004. I call myself Zoot as it's a derivative of an old childhood nickname. I used to write about my struggles to have children, but eventually I succeeded and now, I write a lot about those kids. I don't use my kid's exact names simply because if someone Googles their very unique names in the future, I don't want them stumbling upon my entries about boobsweat. I mean, would you hire someone whose Mom writes openly about such topics? NO. YOU WOULD NOT.

I love taking pictures and carry my camera (almost) everywhere I go. This means you'll see a lot of photos on this site. I also periodically post recipes I like as I've been slowly (but surely) learning to cook and I like to share my discoveries. Finally? I'm an annoying pop culture fanatic so I'll periodically ramble about Hunger Games or the latest Parks and Recreation.

I hope you like it here. If not? Please don't tell me. I cry easily.
