I’ve gotten a million emails from people saying the Golden Compass movie is going to RUIN our children. Something about luring them to read a book, turning them into spawns of Satan?

I read the 1st of the trilogy several years ago and found it dark – maybe I couldn’t make it through because there was SO MUCH SNOW and it made me cold.

Anyway, want to hear your reaction. It’s more Hobbit-y or LOTR-y than Harry-ish, I think.

Yay Etsy! My friend just opened her new shop, Buzz Loves, on Etsy!

I hope she’s featured in the Showcase!

The times I have visited Etsy I have found some cool stuff, but I am with you on the being completely overwhelmed part, so this is a cool link!

Holmes is my hero now too. I can barely do heels on a regular day, so I can’t even imagine doing it after a marathon.

  6. stacey says:

Katie Holmes ran without a sports bra or any kind of support that way…..there are some very interesting photographic pics to support that….I dont understand how…that would just HURT!!! Regardless, bravo to her for running it, finishing it, and going out for the night afterwards….

oh and I am just starting to hear things about Golden Compass….it sounds very interesting…..

The “His Dark Materials” Trilogy is actually a really good read. To be fair to the wingnuts, it does get progressively more anti-church from the first book to the third – they’re not wrong there. Of course, it’s a story about alternate worlds with talking polar bears and miniature people who ride dragonflies, so anyone who takes it seriously obviously needs a reality check. I think the first book is the best, but they’re all good.

  8. I am so unbelievably addicted to Etsy that it’s not even funny. I’ve picked out a bunch of things for people for Xmas. I love supporting independent artists. Hopefully I’ll get some loyal followers after I open my shop. :D

The ‘His Dark Materials’ Trilogy is FANTASTIC. I recommend it to anyone from about age 11 up. I’m so looking forward to seeing how they treat certain elements in the movie. The ONLY bad thing about these books is that there are only 3 of them! Of course, I’m not exactly known to be pious…

  10. Alias Mother says:

I loved the Dark Materials trilogy. No, it’s probably not for you if you are a dedicated Christian who is worried about your kids getting too much of an alternative viewpoint. (Much as the Narnia series is probably not for pagans or athiests who try to steer as far away from the Christian church as they can.)

“The Golden Compass” is a book. A book and a series that has a lot to say, some of it pretty challenging and dark. That doesn’t mean it’s going to ruin the world. It’s just not for everyone (and it’s especially not for young kids. I don’t think I’d give it to anyone younger than 11 or 12).

I’m just tired of reactionaries. Can’t people just say, “Eh, I don’t think it’s right for my kid” and move on?

  11. junkie says:

ha! you had to know my mom emailed me about the evils of new movie and all the books. it took all i had to refrain from telling how how much i liked the trilogy i had read a few months ago and couldn’t wait for ariel to get into the movies.

  12. Moogie says:

I love etsy but like you, I get overwhelmed. This link is fabulous. I’ve bookmarked it now. Just what I need, and easier way to spend money.

As far as The Golden Compass….I’m not really sure how I feel about it.

  13. TammyK says:

I think it’s very cool that Katie ran a marathon. Pretty neat. And as for Golden Compass… I am gonna go get it and read it myself… then we’ll see I suppose. According to a few people my children are already spawns of Satan, lol

  14. canape says:

That is one of my favorite Etsy pages too. It’s also fun to go to the color search page and just browse through random things of the same hue.

Hi. I’m Kim.

This is my blog that I've been writing on since January, 2004. I call myself Zoot as it's a derivative of an old childhood nickname. I used to write about my struggles to have children, but eventually I succeeded and now, I write a lot about those kids. I don't use my kid's exact names simply because if someone Googles their very unique names in the future, I don't want them stumbling upon my entries about boobsweat. I mean, would you hire someone whose Mom writes openly about such topics? NO. YOU WOULD NOT.

I love taking pictures and carry my camera (almost) everywhere I go. This means you'll see a lot of photos on this site. I also periodically post recipes I like as I've been slowly (but surely) learning to cook and I like to share my discoveries. Finally? I'm an annoying pop culture fanatic so I'll periodically ramble about Hunger Games or the latest Parks and Recreation.

I hope you like it here. If not? Please don't tell me. I cry easily.
