Another positive sign for this pregnancy (Man - I’m such an optimist this time. It’s so unlike me.) is that I’ve had weird food cravings and sudden off-kilter food dislikes. I usually love marshmallow cereal goodness in whatever form it comes in. But this morning? I ate a bowl and the aftertaste of it made me want to hurl for an hour. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to even smell the stuff again, much less eat it. Whereas, I can not stop thinking about green olives. Like, right now, 6:30am, I’m thinking about grabbing a handful of green olives to wash down that marshmallow taste. THAT IS DISGUSTING.
And Pimento cheese. I have eaten nothing but Pimento cheese sandwiches for the last week. I can not eat enough of the stuff. I even brought a container to work earlier this week and ate the stuff with crackers! Just dipping it like some sort of appetizer. GROSS.
I’ve suddenly decided I don’t really like veggie burgers. A standard staple in my diet for the last 10 years. And now? I think they look, smell, and taste really nasty. I made one for NikkiZ the other day and just about gagged cutting it up for her. I’ve eaten HUNDREDS of them in my life, and suddenly I’m repulsed by them? That has GOT to be a good sign, right? Surely this baby is going to hang in there if he’s already screwing with my palette. That’s how I’m looking at it anyway.
Now, for my next culinary adventure: Crackers dipped in pimento cheese with a green olive on the top for good measure.
I’m drooling now.

Hey, if you put an olive on top, that makes it a canape and that is SERIOUSLY CLASSY!
Being in the family way for the first time myself, I must echo your love of pimento cheese. I’ve never been a fan, but suddenly? Love!!! I can’t handle soup, though. And I have made barfing part of my morning routine. You know, shower, blow dry hair, make up, barf, get dressed…
I’m sure it’s a good sign, but it is miserable.
I was all about the olives while pregnant (I like them normally, but man — NON STOP then).
Glad to hear things are going well!
About a year ago, I went through a serious pimento cheese phase. I couldn’t get enough of it. But I wasn’t pregnant, obviously. Drats! Now I want pimento cheese.
I can’t stand olives, but maybe someday I’ll crave them
Anyway, that all sounds pretty gross, and I’m very happy for you
Yum! Your appetizer idea with the crackers, cheese AND olives sounds delicious!
How many weeks are you now?
Okay so I don’t know what to say ……. “Great” or “I hope your feel better”……. so I’m saying both!
Mine was broccolli, which I loved before, and still can’t eat even though my son is now 2 1/2. Even worse though, a friend of mine couldn’t eat anything with garlic in it and still can’t. I can think of few things worse than garlic being taken away from me.
when i was preggo with my first son, before i knew i was pregnant i craved green olives. heres the catch, i had never EVER had one in my whole life i just craved what i thought they tasted like. i bought some and devoured a whole jar on the couch with a tooth pick. the second pregnancy i craved pickles and pepperoncinis…it was so strange.
oh also, i can’t look at a green olive now they are rotten and i dond know how i loved them so much back then
I think this is an excellent sign for your pregnancy and I’m glad you’re staying so positive. I could not stnad peanut butter when I was pregnant. Could not be in the same room with an open jar of peanut butter.
…and obviously, I’ve lost my ability to spell. I guess I need more coffee.
You’re not just having cravings, you’re having weird cravings, so I think that is definitely a good sign!
One Thursday morning on my way to work in 2002, I stopped at the local doughnut shop and picked up some doughnut holes like I did several times a week. For some reason I was craving them more than ever. When I got to work and opened the bag, the smell hit me and I had to immediaty throw them away. We weren’t trying to get pregnant yet, but we had stopped preventing three weeks earlier……..
I went straight home at lunch and took a pregnancy test and it came up positive right away. I was only like 2 weeks pregnant and I’ve still never really gotten back into eating doughnut holes. It ruined it.
And, when I wes pregnant we ate Chevy’s Fresh Mex 4 - 5 times a week and it was the last meal I had before going in the hospital and it was the first place I brought my son when he was 9 days old. Pregnancy cravings and aversions can really mess with you when it comes to food.
I think all of the signs you are having are nothing but ultra positive……sorry you’re not feeling well, but actually I’m not because it’s all very reassuring for you
Mine was the smell of red sauce (on pasta or pizza or ANYTHING). Just the smell was enough to make me fell puky, much less the taste of it. Couldn’t get anywhere near it. And my husband is Italian! It was really hard for him to go all those months without being able to even think about having pizza or pasta in the house. He had to go visit his mom for his fix…lol!
I think I lived on Kraft White Chedder Mac & Cheese — yes, the icky powder cheese stuff when I was pregnant. I still like the taste — but it took 3 years for either my son or I to be able to look at it again.
The thing that was hard to deal with was my sense of smell was all wonky and I kept smelling raw meat — oh how that sucked.
Sounds like a positive sign to me! And also delicious! I’m having similar pregnancy cravings. Especially tomatoes, which I didn’t like at all before.
The crackers and pimento cheese sounds like a great idea right now. And I agree with you, I am pregnant and veggie burgers (also a staple for me) are off the list right now.
Um, gross really? pimento cheese? ick. but it is a good sign….
Yay for cravings! I couldn’t get enough of vegetables, oatmeal, and chocolate.
Green olives are ALWAYS good. When I was pregnant with my son I would go to Taco Bell at night and order 3 soft shell taco supremes and then stick them in the fridge. In the morning I would take them out, open them up and put a few olive slices in there and then EAT THEM COLD. Mmm…that was soooo good. Now? Not so much. But then? Man, that was delish.
I hate just about everything I normally eat. The thought of chicken makes me wanna hurl, and I hate pork chops! Ewww… and broccoli, normally a staple is repulsive!
I do however enjoy melted medium cheddar on Triscuts, topped with pickles. YUM!
(I felt the baby move today - little pops… you should soon too!!! You’re not far behind!)
i think i’m going to have to break up with you now, because green olives are CLEARLY from the devil.
Pimento cheese sandwiches and olives sound DELICIOUS to me right now.
Also, I just spent 20 minutes discussing the tradgedy of what is lacking in our neighborhood: A Wendy’s. (I am now convinced that Wendy’s is the official restaurant of the pregnant woman).
Do you have a Fresh Market store where you live? They make GREAT pimento cheese.
I vote for it being a good sign. I’m not pregnant and I don’t find your food cravings gross. I’ll let you decide if that is good or bad.
I could eat jars of olives every day. I love them that much. And I could not live without cheese.
My favorite combo is:
three slices of toasted bread
Alternate spreading spicy mustard and mayo
3-4 Kraft single slices between each toast as you build 3-tier sandwich
green pimiento filled olives go on the last layer of cheese before you add the last slice of bread. (easier to manage the sandwich if you chop the olives a bit)
slice sandwich in half
CONSUME
Actually, there have been studies that say that it’s a good sign to have cravings and morning sickness. I craved anything salty during my first trimester. That and doughnuts. But the smell of coffee (which I usually enjoy) made me want to hurl. I was drinking salty vegetable broth for breakfast- EEEW!!
i second sadie - i worked at the fresh market (in the bakery) and made the mistake of tasting their chipotle pimento cheese one day….i lived on that stuff for a month. seriously, i ate it at least 3-4 times a week. i wish i could say i was pregnant so it would justify my cravings!! haha
The hardest part of my pregnancy this time around is that I can’t eat pizza, which was formerly a staple of my diet. Now it just tastes awful (and gives me heartburn). But green olives? Yum!
@sadie and @katie -
It is the FM stuff in my fridge right now! It’s amazing. However, I’m eating so much I’m sticking to the low-fat version, but it’s really good too!
My son is made of chocolate milk and frosted honey buns.
My husband walked in on me one day while I had a huge bowl of popcorn in my lap, a lemon in one hand and the salt shaker in the other. “Salt craving?” Just a bit.
ugh i wish i wouldn’t have read this…i think i am going to have to stop by tfm on the way home from work today…right now all i can think about is chipotle pimento cheese! agh!! lol
Mmm, pimento cheese. Dude, I love pimento cheese sooo much. And green olives.
When I was pregnant with Aidan I wanted veggies. I ate a sweet potato just about every day. And I despised them prior to being preggers. And tomatoes. I ate mah weight in B.L.T.’s. That happened during both pregnancies!
I could NOT eat salmon. Still can’t. I had a hard time typing the word!
But, my most bizarre craving? Brussel Sprouts with mah Diddy’s Super-Duper MoFo BBQ sauce. God, it was so good. It about made my poor father hurl though!
I’m glad you are having cravings and the sickness. It sounds like everything is going well in you belly.
Shouldn’t we be seeing pictures? Have you started showing? Will there be pictures? Could I ask any more questions?!
Oh, and I forgot this…
I hate coffee and other than when I first became a legal drinker, I don’t beer, but when I was pregnant, I craved the smell of both. I would love just being around my husband when he was drinking either just to smell it.
I had a HUGE aversion to veggie burgers during my second pregnancy. The smell of them heating in the microwave would send me straight to the bathroom to dry heave. Also veggie dogs…gag! most frozen Morning Star and Boca products in general got me. Also, I feel you with the pimento cheese. My mother in law makes it from scratch in her bakery/cafe and I have been known to stop by just for pimento cheese on french bread. Yum.
I forget Zoot… how far along are you again? I am in my first trimester and waiting for such “cravings” to hit… so far all I have noticed is that I cannot STAND junk food (halloween candy, peeps - my usual fave) and hate black olives which I used to love…. please tell me what I have to look forward to
Pimento cheese on crackers with an olive on top sounds delish and I’m not even pregnant. I think I need to go pick up some right away!
I’m so excited for you!
With my last pregnancy, I was obsessed with vinegar. ANYTHING with vinegar. The more, the merrier. I’m sure that I smelled just lovely.
So happy to hear that Lucky Charms make you sick! Yay!
When I was pregnant I was revolted by onions in any form and pasta sauce that had sugar in it. I was like a bloodhound - give me some sauce and I could tell you if it had sugar in it or not. My husband would try to hide under the table if we were out because I would grill the waitress about the ingredients of their sauce. If they didn’t know - I made them bring me some to taste. It was horrible. For years I could only eat specific kinds of pasta sauce because it would turn my stomach.
It’s really weird. I never craved very much during my first pregnancy, but during my second? I wanted Chinese food or Mongolian bbq. Especially the latter. And of course all that sodium went to my ankles, plus it made me really thirsty which made me pee even more! Ahhhh…good times.
Say it ain’t so!!! Veggie burgers???? Really??? I’m sorry, girl! I can’t even imagine!
Surely this baby is going to hang in there if he’s already screwing with my palette. That’s how I’m looking at it anyway.
if HE’S, oh your sub concious lets me know your thinking its a BOY!!great craving story..
but yeah gross cravings.
I had a cream cheese and green olive sandwich for lunch this weekend. It was so awesome.
Until the heartburn kicked in. The pregnancy heartburn. It is evil.
