Akismet is a very awesome anti-spam tool. It has blocked 353,502 spam since I set it up one year ago. So, obviously, it’s doing a good job. HOWEVER - it seems that lately stuff is getting through way more than it use to. I used to get hit, maybe once a month, with spam that made it past Akismet. Now it is several times a day. Now - keep in mind - it still blocks HUNDREDS per day, so this is not a huge percentage, but I was wondering if anyone else was seeing the same trend? I have found some articles discussing this alarming occurrence, but I’m wondering if it’s happening everywhere or not. Sometimes it’s hard for me to wade through the techno-babble when I just want to know: Can We Fix It? So — any other Akismet users noticing more Trackback spam getting through?

I use a triple combo of Askimet, Bad Behavior plug in and Comment Time out. I get maybe one spam a week. Currently Bad Behavior plug in is turned off because they have some glitches they need to fix, though, so maybe wait to grab that one.
Akismet works wonders for me. I notice maybe one spam a month, but I don’t get the kind of traffic you do.
And more often than not even that one spam I do get doesn’t show up on my blog it just sits there waiting for approval.
I have gotten trackback spam for awhile, even with having Akismet since I set up my blog over a year ago. I eventually turned on comment moderation for first-time comments, which has helped. I still get the trackbacks, but I’m able to immediately moderate them as “spam,” and I have been getting far fewer as a result.
I also notice that they seem to come in waves. Like Akismet has bad days when it lets 10 through, and then it gets its act together again and doesn’t let any through for a month.
I don’t get that much spam. Maybe because I only have like, six readers?!
I haven’t had any spam getting through. But um yeah, I don’t have the reader numbers like you do. I’m sure that has something to do with it…right?!
nope- my askimet is working same as usual.
I switched from Akismet to Spam Karma 2 a while back, and I like it better because it’s a lot more configurable.
Pingback spam is a fairly new frontier for anti-spam efforts, and it’s going to take a while for safeguards to catch up. There are some Wordpress plugins that might help with the problem:

I’ve noticed this too with Akismet. I’m getting about 5 a day through. I hope it sorts itself out.
I had my blogspot site for 7 months and got one or two spams from there. I’ve had my Wordpress site for 7 days. No spam.
I’m thinking that being an unknown saves me.
I am, however, in awe of what your traffic #s must be like.
I am so frustrated that I’ve turned off comments / pingback and my comment form.
I hate being all ostrich-like, but I’m tired of it. I’ll check out the suggested plugins when I get a chance.
I have noticed more getting through lately - thought it was just me!
Same here!
Yes, it is happening to me too. We’re in the process of assessing our antispam ware.
I forgot to mention that it usually happens 3-4 times per day at around the same time each day. Each time I will receive between 30 and 50 messages.
I haven’t been hit by the spammers in full force yet, but when I do, I’m going to come crawling to you for advice. I’m not so techno-savvy.
I’ve noticed a lot of trackback spam getting through on other blogs that only run Akismet, but as I use it and Spam Karma on my blog, ain’t NOTHIN’ getting through there.
I use Spam Karma and have been really pleased with it. Of course I think I have it set to “super beotch” mode or something like that but…
I mentioned a celebrity name the other day in a post and within seconds of posting it I was getting some weird trackbacks and that was pretty darn annoying!
I’m not sure I’ve ever come back and posted something in respone before, but since i tempted the spamming gods of fate and told you that I hadn’t been hit, my website has been bombarded with spammers.
Guess I should’ve kept my mouth shut, eh?
