So, I’m pregnant. Right? And I’m hungry - often. Actually, I think about food all the time. Not necessarily because I’m hungry, but because I’m craving food. It’s like, I get these crazy cravings - but for nothing specific. I’ve never dealt with severe cravings with any of my pregnancies, but this time? I dream about food. BUT - it’s like my pregnant self is on the quest for some sort of dream food and all my body wants to do is try new things at the grocery store, searching for the foods that will satisfy my cravings.
The worst is breakfast. I wake up every morning either starving, or just wanting FOOD FOOD FOOD. (Which, I’m learning, is not the same thing.) But - I can not find the breakfast food my pregnant body likes. I’ve made egg sandwiches and oatmeal. I’ve bought poptarts and yogurt. I even bought donuts and….eh…they didn’t do it either. So, I find myself going grocery shopping and just wandering down the aisles (especially the breakfast aisles) looking for cereals or other items that spark my craving interest.
It’s really insane. And also? Bugging the shit out of me. It’s like my mind has taken a turn and I’m in some sort of quest mode…but there’s nothing even remotely noble about it. I mean - I’m obsessing about FOOD. It’s all I think about…ALL THE TIME.
So - you know where this is going, right? Make me drool. Tell me what you eat for breakfast. If it’s something I can simply buy off the shelves and then go home and eat, you get bonus points. If I can eat it in the store while I shop? Even better.

I kinda feel like I am writing food porn right now
For breakfast I always have a variety of 5 fruits blended into a smoothie. Today two oranges, an apple, and two kiwis. (skin on the apple for extra nutrition). You could a spoonful of yoghurt or a spoonful of oats or a spoonful of honey if those things strike you as yummy.
Yesterday i had whole wheat bread slathered with creamy goatcheese, with a fresh thyme one egg omelet on the side.
The day before that I had a poached egg and a buttered piece of toast.
How’s that?
I am currently eating my usual breakfast, plain non-fat yogurt mixed with defrosted mixed berries and low fat granola (WITHOUT RAISINS!!!)
Absolutely love it, will even eat it for dinner if my boys are not eating with me…
peanut butter on wheat bread.
Or
a slice of white bread, w/a little mayo and a kraft white cheese single!
MMMM! maybe i am pregnant?? egads I hope not, i’m just a weird eater!
Well, I love anything with bacon, egg, and cheese. Eggs don’t take long to cook, and pre-cooked bacon makes that a snap as well. Hash browns are awesome, too, but I don’t dare try to cook my own.
I know I don’t get bonus points, but I’m not entirely sure what stores sell in the mornings!
Good luck on your quest!
Odwalla Bar - Chocolate Chip Peanut. Peanuts and oats and dark chocolate chips. It isn’t quite a big cookie for breakfast but it is close. Oh yeah, then some fruit a couple of hours later.
I’m currently 18 weeks, and food is an issue too. I always want something good, but what is it? No idea.
Lately I’ve munched on Quaker chocolate rice snacks, followed by an orange, apple or banana. I also love to make muffins in different flavors. Breakfast is hard for me, I’ve never really loved it.
Just keep trying a variety. This time around I find my tastes change so quickly. So whatever I make, it’s in small batches, because tomorrow I will not want it anymore. Fun stuff.
17 weeks here and I am all about the Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal for breakfast…. (which is HIGHLY not like me b/c I don’t “do” sugary in the morning usually)…
I know what you mean about wanting something… but not knowing what that something is… unsubstantiated cravings…
When I was pregnant, I used to eat the weirdest stuff for breakfast. My favorite? Pringles. Plain pringles. And coke. It had to be regular. And I hate that in real life.
One time I really had to have a tuna fish sandwich on a croissant with a Sprite.
Some times it was macaroni and cheese.
Oh, one time — it was beef jerky and a chocolate shake. And I had to have the together. Separate, they just wouldn’t work.
Nowdays, that I’m a normal, not pregnant human being, I eat your boring things for breakfast. The latest thing that I love? Life cereal with the yogurt crunches in it.
I just made an egg/swiss cheese/tomato bagel (everything) sandwhich in my kitchen with salada hot tea, lemon and honey
After working midnight shift for many years. I have learned to not worry about eating any foods at any specific time of the day. My kids love it when i make “breakfast” for dinner and yesterday i had a chef salad for breakfast with zesty italian dressing. Today I had a ham, egg and cheese sandwich. I have had dinner leftovers for breakfast before(think pork chops/mashed potatos with gravy) and one day last week I had leftover Beef teriaki ! I just eat whatever I feel like and to heck with what you should or shouldn’t eat at any given time.
I always ate a lot of granola bars or eggos - yes, eggos with butter - bonus points? Eggos have TONS of iron in them, which is good as I was really low.
weight control Quaker oatmeal. Maple and Brown Sugar. which isn’t that good. I like the Banana Nut bread one much better. Then usually a banana. or a cookie. Lately it has been King Cake. OH OH maybe that is what you need!!! Do they have King Cakes up by you?? Should I send you one??
Dude, Honey Nut Cheerios. SO GOOD. Really, give them a try. I could eat them morning, noon, and night.
When I was pregnant I would get out my griddle and put an english muffin on it, a slice of canadian bacon, and an egg. Put it all together hot off the griddle with a cheddar slice. AMAZING. When I had gestational diabetes, I only ate one half of the english muffin.
I also ate a lot of eggo’s when I had morning sickness. I would even have waffles for dinner, because they settled well.
Kashi GoLean cereal with skim milk. Super boring!
14 Weeks today and this morning I wanted Pancakes so bad I almost stopped at a diner to have a good syrupy stack but then remembered I had a conference call to be bored on. So I had a sesame bagel toasted until really golden with Honey Roasted Peanut Butter and some Pineapple. It was yummy and probably much better then the Pancakes would have been…but yum, pancakes.
I go the boring, standard, but satisfying route.
Homemade bread, toasted with butter and honey. I’m out of time to brew some coffee, and need my caffeine to get me through class, so I also popped open a diet coke.
Normally, though, it’s a hot cup of coffee, that is the most important part of the breakfast.
He! I had the same issue when I was pregnant, but to make matters even worse, we were living in Amsterdam at the time and they had NOTHING I “needed”. talk about frustration!
Anyhow, currently, every morning the Girl! (soon to be 18 months) and I have a fruit and sometimes fruit and veggie smoothie (my child has entered toddlerdom and refuses to eat. anything. ever).
We mix about a 1/2 of vanilla yogurt, about a cup of OJ, or Apple J, or whatever “J” we have on hand, a banana and assorted frozen fruit, somedays I skip the banane and add about a 1/4 cup of wither carrott puree or sweet potato puree then we add fruits. some days its about 3/4 cup of thawed peaches, some days is blueberries, some days it’s a big mix. but whatever, it’s about 3/4 cup and about 4 cubes of ice and about 3TBS of flaxseed meal. Blend it, and serve. it’s great because it goes everywhere, i can give it to her in teh car if we acutally have to leave our hosue before 830 for some odd reason, and since I add whatever fruits or veggies I feel like, it’s pretty versatile. And not to mention, I feel liek I’m giving her somethign slightly more nutrious than frozen waffles, grilled cheeses or saucy noodles - the only three things my child will willing eat right now.
On days when I am just not feeling like a liquid breakfast, I typically make myself an eggwhite and turkey baon sandwich. But that doesn’t help you.
Good luck - I have felt that pain before.
I don’t know if you’ve tried this one, but it’s one of my favorites, a Monte Cristo sandwich. It’s ham & cheese (optional) with jam (a flavor you like) between two pieces of french toast. I like to add an egg to mine.
That & a vente latte from Starbucks hits the spot for me.
When I was pregnant I was addicted to grape nuts. Every night about midnight I would be STARVING and would eat a giant bowl of them topped with a giant pile of sugar. I do not recommend it unless you are purposefully trying to gain weight at rapid speed.
I had twins in August and craved cottage cheese and toast for breakfast everyday when I was pregnant - now I think it’s yucky…hehe
Two scrambled eggs white with ketchup and a toasted English muffin…when I have time to make it.
I’ve kind of had the same problem but I found the cure for me in eggo waffles (or generics, depending on whether we’ve been to costco or the regular grocery store) with peanut butter and raspberry jam alongside a bowl of instant oatmeal. Lately the oatmeal has been cinnamon bun flavor and I add nondairy creamer when I make it to make it nice and creamy without cooling it off with milk. Top it off with oj or other fruit juice and maybe just a teensy bit of decaf and you have the breakfast of this preggo….
I crave donuts though. The entire pregnancy. We’ve only caved and bought them about 3 times as I’m trying to make sure I don’t balloon up (was 25 lbs overweight when I GOT pregnant). But ohhhh, donuts. mmmmm.
omg, how do you all have time to eat breakfast every morning? i wish i had time to cook all these yummy things!
i did make a big batch of granola and would grab some of that as i ran out the door every morning…but then i realized i was only picking out the nuts and eating them (i like salty stuff a lot)…so the past few days i’ve just been bringing a little bag of dry roasted peanuts. maybe it’s a weird breakfast, but it hits the spot without being too sweet AND it’s protein!
OK, OK!
When I was pregnant with both my kids I ate this ALL THE TIME!
I would fry a egg and make sure it had dippy (yok) still in the middle. THen I would top it with cheese once it was cooked. I would then toast a bagel and put cream cheese on the bagel then add the fired egg with cheese the cheese on top. BEST STUFF EVER!
Also works well if you fry the egg then add the egg to the middle of bread and cheese and cook again like a grill cheese samich with fried egg
Good Luck
xoxoxo
Pregnant here too. I’m dreaming about food almost every night - it is rather sick.
Breakfast isn’t very exciting but I usually have 2 pieces of wheat toast - one topped with egg salad and one topped with Honey Roasted Peanut Butter (my new obsession). Or sometimes plain yogurt, dried cranberries and a handful of granola mixed up - yum! If I’m not in the mood for eggs, I go for wheat toast or a bagel with hummus slathered on both sides and slices of cucumber on top and some alfalfa sprouts - put together for a yummy sandwich. Really I just want a donut.
I like to make a sandwich out of an english muffin. Toast the muffin and put in one slice of cheese, one slice microwaved bacon and go. I like to put a little mustard on there too, but it’s good with just the cheese and bacon too.
Chikfila chicken minis are pretty high on the list too, but those aren’t really a make at home breakfast.
I’m 26 weeks. Yesterday morning I had a chili dog for breakfast, and this morning I had Jeno’s Pizza Rolls.
Yum.
I crave weird things with this pregnancy. I want to eat sour candy and refried beans (not together). For breakfast I usually just eat cereal but I wish I could have fresh HOT waffles…the frozen kind just don’t cut it.
How do you feel about oatmeal? I love baked oatmeal …
http://www.cooks.com/rec/doc/0,1910,149185-238205,00.html
In my dream world I could just go to Another Broken Egg everyday for breakfast….
Peanut butter and honey on bread or fried egg sandwich.
I almost NEVER eat breakfast (unless you consider a cup of coffee breakfast?).
But with this pregnancy, I MUST HAVE a bowl of Applejacks or someone gets hurt.
This morning, Henry was stealing those fruity o’s from my bowl. And I *almost* cried.
what am I thinking…in my dream world …they would deliver!
Cultural Revolution Vanilla yogurt, frozen blueberries and granola. Potato bread toast.
I hate to rat anyone out, but she was like that before she got pregnant
I could tell you some stories… but she’s probably already posted them here. Hungry and Zoot go together like Eggs and Bacon. Wait, did someone just say breakfast? Now I’m hungry, dammit!
@Everyone - I’m on my way to the store to buy one of everything mentioned.
@Chrispian - DON’T SAY A WORD. I like to pretend this is all pregnancy related.
Okay I am not pregnant and currently on Weight Watchers so I haven’t been able to have them in a long while but Red Baron makes the most delicious breakfast pizza!! OMG!! You can get it with bacon or sausage and it is usually in the frozen section by the waffles. They have a ton of calories but ohhh so good!
@zoot Blackmail
I’m not a breakfast person except on the occasional Saturday or Sunday morning. When I was pregnant I forced myself to eat oatmeal every morning before work. However, if I were to want breakfast it would be chocolate chip pancakes or a breakfast sandwich (toast with jelly, scrambled eggs, and bacon). I did crave cream cheese my entire pregnancy so occasionally bought bagels with different kinds of cream cheese when I was out and about for breakfast.
I love Pizza Bagels. All you need is a bagel, top it with pizza sauce and mozz. cheese and put it in the broiler for about 2 minutes to melt the cheese.
I also love hashbrowns. Buy them frozen and just throw them in a pan!
i just remembered my favorite breakfast of all time (that i don’t have time for anymore)
pepperoni bagel bites…seriously, they are perfection in the morning time. and you can justify it as breakfast food because it’s bagels!
Breakfast burritos are good. First brown some breakfast sausage put it aside, scramble eggs, throw some shredded cheese in then put the sausage in with the eggs and cheese. Microwave a flour torillia and put your ingrediants in and roll it up. You can also put some Taco Bell sauce in to spice it up.
Im pregnant too, and yes, I do think about food, but my obsession is cleaning products and cleaning. LOL. I ask all my friends for their tips and products, I devise cleaning charts and lists of products I’d like to try, and I spend a crazy amount of time scouring the internet for cleaning freak websites. Sick.
I usually eat half of a container of Fage Total yogurt with about 1/4 cup of mixed berries and a sprinkle of Splenda. Something that’s protein-based and not too starchy will help quell your hunger and cravings!
Apple pancakes.
Make regular pancake mix (whichever kind is easiest except the premade toaster pancakes) and when you put it on the pan to cook, put a REALLY REALLY thin slice of apple on top of the batter. Then put a tiny bit more batter on top of the slice so when you flip it you’re not burning the apple. Cook. Enjoy.
I also second breakfast burritos.
Finally, we love leftover rice pudding for breakfast. Or bread pudding, for that matter.
Since I work nights, I eat random stuff at random times of the day. Often, when I come off of work, I have a ham and cheese sandwich because it sticks with me long enough that I can sleep for seven hours and not wake up hungry. Today, I had a froze Mama Celeste pizza for breakfast. At a diner, I always get pancakes…SO GOOD!
Oh, and @kindra roberts - those breakfast pizzas are SO GOOD! I love them! I haven’t had them for a while because I too am a WW girl (although I am not doing my best at it right now - as seen above), but those are seriously the best frozen breakfast food ever! YUM!!!
Well, mine sounds pretty boring compared to everyone else. When do you people find time for some of these things? I grab a Fiber One Honey and Oat granola bar. If i’m lucky I have grapes for a mid morning snack to hold me until lunch.
I’m seriously into bagels and cream cheese these days. I generally pick cinnamon and raisin bagels though I’ve been known to have cinnamon and baked apple bagels too (the advantage to the raisin ones is that no one else will eat them so they are ALL MINE). I get the cream cheese in the tub so it’s easy to get out and spread and I put a nice thick layer on the toasted bagel…. mmmm!!!
And last night Kile made french toast for breakfast, made with actual french bread. He stuffed mine with cream cheese (sensing a trend?) and then buttered it, but a dollop of jam on the top and sprinkled some powdered sugar. OMG, it was heaven.
There is a big difference between being hungry and just not being satisfied. I didn’t read ALL of the suggestions, but my go-to food when I need to be satisfied is an English muffin with butter and cinnamon sugar. Good luck!
Breakfast Burritos. Ate one almost every morning of the last two trimesters of my pregnancy with twins.
With really good salsa. That was the key componant.
Yum. Still sounds good.
When I was pregnant, I craved the “healthy” brand of Pop-tart type things. I would even eat them in the store. During the first few months, I also craved salt A LOT and would eat those drinkable soup packets and Doritos for breakfast. It sounds horrible now, but then it was sheer bliss.
I eat cream of wheat with a banana cut up in it, with a little milk and splenda. Or vanilla yogurt with blueberries.
My latest is Quaker Oatmeal To Go-Raspberry Streusel. Er, at least for one of my breakfasts
I’m nursing and still in that starving all the time mode…someday I won’t feel hungry right?
OK I totally shouldn’t have read the comments cause now I am starving!! Are the cravings giving any clues, like salty, sweet, creamy, crunchy…? I love breakfast and will eat it any time of day. I love bagels with butter and rosemary honey or waffles for something sweet (eggos are super easy). Maple Flavored Mini Wheats are a go to quick breakfast and when I have more time I ,well love isn’t a strong enough word really, breakfast burritos, sausage patties, bacon, any kind of egg… okay this is not helping. I am just going to stop and go make myself some breakfast, but I stongly suggest you just go to MacDonalds and get your self a Sausage n Egg McGriddle with a hashbrown, or breakfast burritos…ok stopping now
It’s like on Friends when Phoebe was pregnant and realized she was craving meat. Sort of.
Good luck!
Oh and also… I love to take a fried egg (over medium) and place it on top of a buttered piece of toast. It’s so delicious.
And then have another piece of buttered toast nearby to spread some cherry jam on. This is a weekend kind of breakfast. During the week I have smoothies or Fiber One granola bars (the best granola bars in the history of the world ever) and apples. I TRY to eat healthy breakfasts during the week so I can have eggs and bacon and fun stuff on the weekends.
I vote for Raspberry Filled Powdered Donuts by Hostess. Because I love health food
When I was pregnant with my middle one (who is now a 19 year old college student), I just LOVED cheese danish! I would get one from the bakery every time I grocery shopped. I didn’t buy loads and eat them every day, but it was a treat I really looked forward to.
Nowadays I try to follow South Beach, which is a healthy way to eat. So I make a “veggie quiche” once a week with frozen spinach (thawed with the water squeezed out), a chopped onion, a diced pepper (jalapeno, anaheim, or pasilla), 6 eggs, and 1 cup of mozzarella cheese (bake at 35o for 35 min). I cut a wedge and pop it in the microwave, and a yummy nutritious breakfast is ready in 45 seconds! Sometimes I’ll supplement this with a couple links of soy sausage.
I also like to make homemade muffins. But they aren’t an entire meal, just something to top off the breakfast if I’m really hungry. Oatmeal-banana-coconut and cornmeal-orange-cranberry are two of my favorite combinations.
Once a week I get a breakfast burrito because a lady delivers them to the office. They’re wonderful!
When I was pregnant it was cold pizza and cold chinese food for me. Don’t know why it had to be cold, but to me it tasted even better cold.
I definitely know that feeling of searching for a food you are craving and not being able to find it. When I was pregnant I thought maybe it was happening to me because I was so sick, and there was nothing I wanted to eat, so my brain kept cycling through EVERY possibility hoping to find something that would make me feel better. I would send my husband to the grocery store with these huge lists of things that sounded good at the time and then not want to eat any of it when he brought it home.
Right now I eat oatmeal every morning for breakfast, but when I was pregnant I always ate a ham and cheese lean pocket because it was the only thing I could get down. After I had my son, I swear, the only thing I ate for a week were those donuts that come in the box with the three varieties, with the chocolate covered, plain, and powdered sugar?
Right now I’m craving a really healthy breakfast for some reason, maybe some yogurt, a banana, a bran muffin. This weekend I’m going to make raisin bread and we’re going to have raisin bread, scrambled eggs, and fruit salad.
And last weekend we went out for breakfast and I had bacon and blackberry pancakes (OMG SO GOOD) and Mr. E had a sandwich made with rosemary bread, avocado, bacon, and an egg. Which was AMAZING.
Enough breakfast food porn for you?
I just feel the need to put craisins on any cereal I eat
Good luck finding your bliss heh.
I found that what I really wanted when preggers was protein; so chicken apple sausage that i could nuke was a good filler. I’m also big on doing “scrambled eggs” in the microwave (I spray pam on the bowl, throw in an egg or two and some milk, mix them together & nuke them depending on how runny you like them; I don’t, so it’s 2mins for me.)
good luck!
I am SO glad that there were a few other people who ate Eggos - I used to eat so many Eggos that I’m surprised my son didn’t get born with little square holes in him…
Hey, this won’t help you much, but I brag about the fact that my preschool serves hot breakfasts (at least 4 days a week, Monday is cereal/poptart day because we never know what might happen on Mondays) and since I make the menu, I do the grocery shopping, I get the best breakfasts in the world these days. Today, Chocolate Chip Muffins, some days, oatmeal, some days just cheese toasts, there’s always bananas, peaches, pears, oranges, apple sauce, and the here’s why it is the most awesome breakfasts in the world - I don’t have to cook them, lol! That makes it double awesome. Good luck!
Okay, here is the best breakfast that I make. I do a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich. Instead of making it on toast, I make it like a grilled cheese. Not sure how you feel about ketchup - but it’s good to dip this sandwich into. After eating this, I usually don’t eat again until supper. If you want, you can skip the bacon and just have a grilled fried egg and cheese sandwich. Delish! It’s also good with sausage. YUM
Reading all of that is either going to make me starved, or sick. Something easy for breakfast that you find in the freezer section; french toast sticks or pancakes. Just throw them in the microwave for 30 seconds and 10 second increments after that until you know how your microwave cooks them. I cannot do eggs.
I love granoal cereal. Kashi makes Mountain Medley and Orchard Spice. Very filling and so good if you like that sort of thing. But not only for breakfast, put some in little baggies and carry them in your purse for emergency snacks. You can even put some on yogurt for some crunch in your yogurt.
The first comment about smoothies? LOVE IT.

I craved cold, cold V8 juice - ONLY in a can.
BUT, here is a recipe for a breakfast casserole. You make it the night before and bake it in the morning. Now this recipe serves a lot, so you could half it or whatever, but it’s not too bad heated up the next day, so one evening putting it together could possibly get you and Nikki through at least two or three mornings with a somewhat traditional breakfast. I also have a recipe for a french toast casserole (very sweet!). Let me know if you’d like that one too. Its perfect for Sunday morning/holiday breakfasts.
1 lb sausage, browned in skillet & drained
2 ¼ cup milk
12 eggs
1 ½ tsp dry mustard (you can use regular prepared mustard, about a tbsp for that zing it adds)
½ tsp salt
1 ½ cup cheddar, grated
6 slices white sandwich bread
Break eggs in large mixing bowl. Add milk, mustard, salt and whisk thoroughly. Tear bread into bite size pieces and add to eggs mixture. Fold in browned sausage and cheese. Pour into greased 13 x 9 casserole dish. Best when refrigerated overnight. Bake at 375 degrees 30-40 minutes.
Serves 8-10
Eggo Chocolate Chip Waffles - so delish or pancakes with butter only- no syrup ( I don’t like maple flavored anything) - w/ chopped banana and a few walnuts. I hope you find what your craving. I was at Wallyworld the other day and a preggo lady was talking to her hubby about wanting pickles w/ honey- she said she HAD to have them- I thought it was cute the way she was rubbing her belly. I told her to indulge herself.
Almost 15 weeks pregnant now…. and my current breakfast obsession are those Pillsbury Toaster Scrambles. Have you seen them? They’re in the freezer section with the frozen waffles and pancakes and other breakfasty things. They kind of remind me of PopTarts…. but are a flakey pastry like outside filled with egg and cheese. The ones I love also have sausage. And they also make them with ham or bacon. Pop them in the toaster and in a few minutes you’re set. A big plus… Zoe (my 2 1/2 year old) loves them too.
When I was pregnant, I would make two toaster waffles, fry an egg, and 3 strips of bacon. I would then proceed to make a sandwich with said waffles, egg and bacon, adding a cheese slice and syrup. Because I was gross… but there you go!
i just had to share what i crave…mcdonalds breakfast skillet burrito. just the right amount of spice…eggs, potatoes, cheese. i want one RIGHT NOW!
I don’t always eat breakfast, but when I do, it’s my infamous “mush”. I take a nice scoop of greek yogurt, pour over it a cup of Trader Joes Maple Pecan Crunch cereal, and then slice either a banana, a peach or berries over that. Then I sort of mush it all together. It’s not pretty, but it tastes SO good and it’s good for you.
My son is made of Hostess Honey Buns and store bought Chocolate Milk. I seriously couldn’t get enough of those things when I was pregnant. And now? He loves honey buns, but will not drink chocolate milk.
I will eat anything at any time of the day. Yesterday, I had a turkey and swiss sub with onions.
Ok.. not pregnant, just an eater. Heh. Anyways, breakfast burritos. We’ll get the chorizo (the soft, not aged kind) and cook it up in a pan til it’s cooked like regular breakfast sausage. Then whisk some eggs in a bowl and dump it in. Stir until the eggs are cooked. Serve in tortilla with cheese. MmmmMMMm. You can add bell peppers to it or chopped tomatoes.
Is it healthy? Noooo. Just yummy. “Mexican” food first thing in the morning is awesome!
