Dude. This is totally going to become a craft blog.

My curtains are done! Sorta. Almost. Well - I haven’t hemmed the bottom yet because we don’t have a curtain rod. I want to hang the curtains up and pin the hem (Look at me and my sewing lingo!) while it’s up so that I get it close to accurate. I’ve also decided my stitching is so bad at the top (the part closing off the loop for the rod) that I’m going to go buy some ribbon and some same color thread and add a little embellishment to cover that up. Stripes are great to work with until you have to go against the stripes, then your lameness shines for the world to see.

But - essentially? DONE! I’m not going to cross it off my list until the finished product is hanging in NikkiZ’s room, but I do want to show you two pictures. This first one if of my line from yesterday.

Day One Learning to Sew
You can’t really see the stitch, but you’ll have to trust me. It’s there!

Day Two: Curtains!
Those are the almost-done curtains behind the machine on the sewing box.

I’m awesome, right? I can’t wait to show you all the finished product. But for now, let me tell you the story of how completely unimpressed my husband was. See - the first panel was so hard - that’s all I wanted to do. It was wide enough for the window, so that’s all that should matter, right? When he came home I showed him that one panel and was all, “Look! I made curtains!” His response was, “Um. You only made one? How do they look out the window?” And other such demanding statements. My husband, not happy until the curtains are actually functional. Geez. So, I woke up this morning and made another one. And it looks pretty good and I’m glad I did it.

He’d better be impressed now, or he’ll have one raging hormonal pregnant woman to deal with.

This is totally me. I just made curtains for our living room and G-man’s bedroom. The living room ones weren’t so bad but I decided to line the one’s for the bedroom (twice as much sewing!) and they took forever. I started those right after Christmas, did one pair, and left them. I finished them up a couple of weeks ago—like 2 months later. And by finished I mean sewed everything and hung them up—except the bottom hems. I now have 8 curtain panels hanging up in my house without the bottoms hemmed. I’m not pressed about it at this point. In my eyes, they’re done.

Nice save with the ribbon idea. Curtains are harder than they look, I bet.

Awesome! Sewing can be addictive though. Pretty soon you look at everything and think, well, I can just whip that up. At least I do. And I can barely sew a straight line. I just sew things that don’t need to be square.

And now for some assvice. If you decide from the outside of the house you don’t like how they look you can line them pretty easily. I used sheets to line mine. Seconds at an outlet mall are much cheaper than a similarly sized piece of fabric and has a uniform color. Just don’t hem the bottoms together, only the top & sides.

    Can’t wait to see them.

I always end up sewing my own curtains because I can never find what I want in the store. Wait until you see how impressed everyone is when you tell them you made them yourself.

See, the good thing about having 2 curtains is that the stitching at the top is gathered up because of the extra fullness. The stitching line is less visible, and you have a more finished look also! I think the rule of thumb is that you want the total width of the curtains to be at least 1 1/2- 2 times the width of your window.
Way to go, you 2-curtain-making seamstress!

you are awesome, indeed. my sister majored in fashion merchandising in college, and i still carry the first sad little purse she ever sewed. well, i carry it sometimes. it’s very fragile, so it can really only hold, like, my ID and a few bills, or else it will break.

and, since i don’t know how to sew…that is not an option.

Woo! I’m all inspired now. Very awesome.

I WISH I knew how to sew anything other than a “running” stitch - which was never even straight after each attempt. My grammie was a great seamstress, but those genes just didn’t get passed down to me (HA! I almost typed “jeans”…hehe…how “punny”… OK let me stop now). Anywho, GO YOU :)
