I did a post the other day listing the things I’ve learned in general, but I learned some interesting things today. Did you know that the men’s colognes in department stores are in the Men’s Department? I did not know that. I spent many minutes looking around the women’s fragrance/cosmetics for men’s colognes. I finally gave up and LilZ suggested that, “Maybe they’re in the Men’s Department?”
Huh? What kind of sense does that make?
A lot of sense, moron.
We went to the men’s department and wouldn’t you know it?! There were two huge counters full of colognes. Of course, this is also how I learned that department store colognes are very expensive. So we bought nothing. $80 for a bottle of cologne? REALLY? I don’t spend that much on every cosmetic I use for makeup/hair/skin TOTAL. Why would I spend that on one bottle that holds no more than 5 ounces of cologne.
And did you know men’s cologne is associated with “seasons”? I asked a lady about one I had seen at TJMaxx and evidently it was at TJMaxx because it’s from last season. Huh? As in…winter? I’m so confused. Does cologne go out of style? Is it a big No-No to wear cologne from last year? Does anyone actually recognize scents from last year? And then look down at people wearing them? If those people exist, I don’t want to hang out with them. I’m betting they would frown on my use of last year’s Suave deodorant.

The only time I pay retail for cologne is before Christmas, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. They have lots of gift sets then that are MUCH better deals!
I’ve never heard of cologne going “out of season,” but I haven’t bought cologne in a while.
(Actually, the rare occasions I’ve bought fragrance of any kind it’s been at a discount store, so I’ve probably been smelling like last season for many seasons myself.)
My dh’s cologne always made me sneeze! Now he smells like soap and I love it
Save a lot of $ too.
You would have to be pretty hoity toity to worry about the “season” of cologne. I guess those same people would frown upon my wearing the same perfume that I got at least 3 years ago.
Thanks for cluing me in to the cologne/perfume seasons! I still wear scents that I’ve been wearing since high school! What can I say…I love them and they work for me. I don’t want to know any cologne snobs, either.
You have got to be kidding me? Wow. I wonder what they would say about me wearing the same perfume for years. Not like I care. They better just be lucky I bathed.
I hate malls!! Seriously…I haven’t been in one since….wow….almost a year? and as for colognes/perfumes? I don’t use em…..they give me headaches….okay the perfumes do. But colognes?? some are soooo yummy, specially on the right guy!!
My husband is a cologne-aholic, and I’ve heard a lot on the subject. The gift sets at TJ Max are always a great deal. Another way to get a good deal on something expensive is ebay. You do have to have an idea about what you want though. His solution is to spend hours sniffing in the cologne section. My nose loses its power to differentiate after like two sniffs, but maybe you can hang tough.
Once you know what you like, spray yourself down at a store to see if you still like it that night. The initial smell is different than the after smell. Once you like it you can shop around and find a much better price than at a department store. If you want to know a lot more on the subject, you can go to basenotes.net. It’s a cologne forum.
Cologne does come in seasons like clothes, summers are lighter and fruitier. But I am picky and only like a few so, I just wear what I like year round, and I seriously doubt anyone knows or cares.
whew…sorry I wrote a book.
My husband wears no-nonsense Aqua Velva aftershave. Smells nice and costs like 4 bucks a bottle at the drugstore. Or, if you want a fancier presentation, Old Spice makes a very similar scent (not the original Old Spice, but the blue one) and it comes in a fancy, bumpy bottle still for like 10 bucks.
Wow. Good thing my husband wont wear cologne.
I don’t change my clothes for the season never mind perfume!
Seasons-shmeasons. I have been alternating the same two perfumes for YEARS.
Who does that “seasonally”? That’s just weird. And waaay too time consuming.
BTW? Gift sets are totally the way to go!
