Look at Me! Pretending Like I Know What I’m Doing!
Category: I Take A Lot of Pictures | 29 Comments »

I downloaded and tinkered with ten photos using Pioneer Woman’s Actions the day she posted them on her blog. For the past two nights I’ve done nothing other than tinker with photos I’ve taken using her ACTION. I have no clue what I’m doing. I SWEAR. Yet – look at the variety of coolness I created using her Actions.

(Just for the record, I already feel cooler just using the word "ACTIONS" like I even know what THAT means.)

I used a couple of different actions per photos, sometimes lightening or cropping first. Essentially I just clicked her actions until I did something I liked. You know – because that’s the way the Professionals do it.

Now, I’d really like to buy Lightroom that Miz Booshay uses for the articles she writes at The Pioneer Woman. She makes it look so easy here. But – I only have three dollars to spare right now. And for some reason Adobe charges more than three dollars for their product. Go figure.

So, I’ll just keep trying to learn my way around Photoshop. Until I kinda get the hang of it, I figure I’ll put all of my PW Action photos in this set, just so you can see how the Actions look when a moron uses them. Here are the ones I’ve worked on so far.

OMG, actions totally make me look like a better photographer than I am. That and the “rule of threes.” And trying to be a natural light whore. Otherwise, I’m a hack.

They look great Zoot! If/when you do decide to buy Adobe, check the price on the student discount, since you do have a student in the house. And I’m sure with his up and coming photog skills he’ll be using it too! The price difference on the student discount is usually huge for the same product.

I’ve been playing with those actions too. Way too much fun. I even went so far as to look up MORE actions online (non-PW) and downloaded those too. I’m obsessed, I tell you. GAH.

Dang! Now I want Photoshop, and I have less than $3 to spare at the moment. Nice job on the pics. I’m particularly found of the sepia-toned and B&W effects. Not for everything, but for one or two a very nice change from what we’ve come to think of as normal.

Those are awesome! Guess I’ll have to mess around with Photoshop myself! Love the one of LilZ with his iPod.

  6. Cassie Says:

WOW. Those photos are really awesome. I’m gonna have to go learn some actions myself! (I heart photoshop. I don’t care what anyone else says about any other program. If you have photoshop, you’re more than fine.)

wow – they are great … and what great models you have! Now I will just have to go sob over my “ps elements” since I never have more than $3 to spend on softward hubbie doesn’t understand!

  10. Cass Says:

I downloaded the 30 day trial of Lightroom to give it a try.

  11. Stacey Says:

I’ve got to try this out, in all my SPARE time! Yours are inspiring me.

  14. Kathy Says:

I really like the desaturated look (she demonstrated this on her site by overlay and B&W layer and moving the percentage up and down. I’ve been messing around with using the high pass filter + vivid light overlay to give a somewhat surreal look.

  15. Fraulein N Says:

Actions! I don’t even know what that means but it sounds like it would be fun to try out.

I am such an action addict. I get most of my free actions from Deviantart or Pay it Forward Photography: http://pifphoto.com/

  17. Tiffani Says:

Waahh! You’re making me want PhotoShop! But it’s expensive, and I wouldn’t have a clue how to use it. But your photos are soooo pretty!

  18. lisa-marie Says:

I bought Photoshop years ago and still haven’t figured out how to use most of the features – it’s just way too hard for me and it really was way too expensive. Personally, I love picnik.com for some awesome (and inexpensive) photo manipulations.

  19. Courtney Says:

    Great work! I’m VERY impessed!

  20. mdv Says:

You did a fabulous job with these.

I’m lusting after a couple of other PW recommended add-ins.

I need help! I downloaded (or thought I did) her actions…do they show up as a toolbar or what? I SO want to use them, I am just not so smart when downloading stuff.

  22. Kathy Says:

Tiffani – There’s a free online version of photoshop called Photoshop Express. I haven’t tried it yet, but it looks like a fun, and importantly, free tool to do some minor tweaking.

  23. Jo Says:

GET LIGHTROOM. It is absolutely awesome. You can batch edit, which is huge, and it will create webpages and galleries for you. TOTALLY WORTH IT.
