Things I Hate: Black Widows and 4am.
Category: Stuff I hate |
*shudder*

In case you missed it on flickr yesterday, I uploaded pictures of a black widow my husband found inside some box on the outside of the house. Every time I think about it, I want to throw up a little bit. I am not a big fan of spiders. MrZ likes to scoop them up and put them outside if they creep into our home. I squoosh them flat with the nearest foot. Of course, he squooshed the black widow, but not until after considering for one brief moment if there was anyplace “safe” to put it away from our house. Then his sanity returned (Me: “You do not get bad karma for killing something that might have killed you!”) and he smooshed the thing dead. DEAD. DEAD. And I ran away from home because even the thought of a dead black widow somewhere near where I sleep scared the crap out of me. I am now living on the streets because I’d rather face druggies and criminals than spiders. Amen.

*shudder*

In less arachnophobic news…my son woke up at 4am this morning! For good! (It should not need to be clarified that I’m talking about my newborn son and not my teenage son who sleeps until 2pm on the days I let him.) 4am is about the earliest I’ll allow a child to wake me up for the day without grounding them for eternity. So, he’s lucky. He can go to his prom this weekend after all. But - if he tries to make it any earlier tomorrow? It’s off.

I’ve actually been staying up a lot later now that AndyZ is here. Maybe it’s because my “ME” time seems more rare and I like to cram in a bit after NikkiZ is asleep. Or maybe my sleep cycle is changing and I’m turning into one of those crazy “Night People” I’ve heard so much about my entire life. Even during my beer-drinking college days, I was a morning person. I have always preferred early mornings to late nights. But maybe three kids will change that in a person. Especially when one of those kids likes to steal my mornings from me by demanding things like being fed and diaper changes and general care. Jeez. So demanding, that kid.

Shock and Awe
Good thing he’s kinda cute.

He is more than kinda cute. This photo makes me want to snuffle his cheeks.

P.S. No need to live on the streets. You can come live with me in NYC. You might melt since it was 91° when I left the house at 2:00 a.m., but at least there are no spiders.

  3. Moogie Says:

First off…eww. Ewww. Ewww…I hat spiders. I did catch the pictures on Flickr yesterday and then immediately wished I wouldn’t have. I’m with you on the spiders. There are so many bugs here in the SE that I didn’t have to deal with in California. My gross factor went through the ceiling. Maybe that was when I started to drink heavily.

As far as the morning/night person? I have also been a morning person. I think that’s probably why the first few months of both of my kids lives were a bit rough on me. I never did change to a night person. Thankfully, my husband was and is a night person so it worked out a lot better than it could have.

Kind of cute? AndyZ is adorable, as is NikkiZ and LilZ. You have a beautiful family. I love reading about them and seeing all the photos.

  4. Moogie Says:

Oops…I sort of turned into a regular Chatty Cathy there..sorry.

  5. Missy Says:

He is completely cute! And for a second there I did think you were talking about LilZ.

I used to be so talented at sleeping in til all hours of the afternoon. It’s really sad that I’m not as good at it anymore.

I fail at commenting lately…my goodness. I’m not even on the mvps!
I hate four a.m. too - but I’m staring it down from the other side, as usual. So I guess that makes me a “night person” - or more accurately, an insomniac. Blech :P
I do not care for spiders, at all, ever. Yuck, yuck, yuck. It’s good that you have a ManThing to dispose of them for you ;)
Aaaand Andy is teh cuteness :D But you knew that!

  7. Z Says:

I’m not normally a spider-hater, but anything that could kill or maim me with one bite? Yeah, that would freak me out…

  8. EJW Says:

    Kinda cute? He’s super cute!

Not so much that spider. *shudder*

  9. jessica Says:

i gobbled his face right thought my computer screen! My childmaed me a morning person, which everyone who’s ever known me thought was IMPOSSIBLE. but liek you I did it to get some of that precious ME TIME in. Funny how we change so much for these little boogers. luckily they are worth it - for now :)

  10. Jenny Says:

Oh my goodness… AndyZ is soooo adorable!!! I love the little faces he makes!

As for the spider, OMG… gross. I hate spiders… If they are the really small itty bitty ones, they don’t bother me much, but great big, juicy looking spiders scare the crap outta me! Glad that Black Widow is GONE!

  11. cagey Says:

As someone who just bought a tarantula last week, that black widow gave even ME the heebie-jeebies (My T is NOT poisonous and will not kill me!)

Thanks for making up for the chills with a snap of the ever adorable AndyZ. What a smoochy, wrinkled forehead. LOVE IT.

  12. Nicole P. Says:

If I found a black widow spider within a 500 ft. radius of my house, my house would be for sale within the day.

  13. Fraulein N Says:

Gah!!!! I think I’d be selling my house too because what if that spider had FRIENDS? I don’t know, do they travel in packs? I know nothing about spiders except I hates them, precious.

Thank goodness for a picture of AndyZ’s baby adorableness to balance out the horror of that first picture.

  14. Gwen Says:

I have to admit I was pretty mad at you when I opened those damn spider pictures in my email. God! Gross! I’ve still got the heebie jeebies.

And then you put it up here. I’m totally skeeved out.

    More Andy, less spiders.

  15. Mims Says:

I can say with a good amount of certainty that I would NEVER be able to live in a place where there are dangerous, poisonous spiders!!! Probably my one and only phobia. Sorry, Huntsville - you seem like an awesome city, but spiders are my deal-breaker.

  16. Stacey Says:

UM ewww to the spider. I hate those those things so bad. ew ew ew ew. Welcome to the late night. What will be most lovely is when you do the late night thing and then wake up early anyway. OH that is SO much fun. Happens to me all the time….

  17. claire Says:

I’ve also always been a morning person and I thought when the baby came I’d just turn into a night person, since he couldn’t even get to sleep much before 2 AM. And yet, that never happened. I just stayed tired and still found more than enough morning energy.

  18. Must Be Motherhood Says:

OMG. So that’s what black widows look like! My parents called me Miss Muffat as a child, so I’m wholly with you on the freakout.

You crack me up with the sleep schedules–you do realize that most people suffer greatly as they adjust to the early to bed/early to rise lifestyle with young children, right? And here you are trying to go in the opposite direction. Ha! :)

  19. Kathy Says:

Ick. That’s one reason I stay in the city. Not too many critters to deal with. When I first moved in to my old apartment, lo and behold, there was a giant spider waiting for me on the windowsill. I did what any reasonable person would do in that situation: I called my mom.

  20. ladybughugs Says:

AndyZ is more than kinda’ cute, Zoot. so is NikkiZ. and Lil’Z. Those wrinkles on his brows make me want to take my thumbs and straighten them.

I’m with you on the poisonous spiders. They’ve got no business any where near the house. Bugs also do not belong inside the house…unless they’re ladybugs, of course.

H and I complement each other nicely in that he’s a morning person and I’m a night person. So he’ll take the kids to the field to play or Home Depot and let me sleep in the morning and then I’m up until they’re down and wake up with them during the night. Early morning is the only time you’d find him anywhere near any kind of retail store.

  21. canape Says:

    Kinda cute? Kinda?

Zoot, that little boy is all kinds of cute. He is what you see when you look up “cute” in the dictionary. He is what Disney wishes they could come up with for “cute.” He is by far and away the cutest of the cute.

You probably knew that though. Tongue in cheek, no?

    ;)

  22. Swistle Says:

    1) That spider is just… Oh. Just….. YEEK. I mean…. ACK! Erk. Yick. Bleah. *shudder*

    2) That baby. I need another baby RIGHT NOW.

  23. Snarky Mommy Says:

O M G. Seriously I am going to have bad dreams about that picture. It almost looks fake. I think my skin is going to crawl off my body right about now….

  24. Devilish Southern Belle Says:

I have found black widows out here, but as long as they stay outside, we’re good. I think they’re beautiful, and spiders are useful. However, my kids are past the ages ‘playing’ outside, though, and know to check everything out before using it. If I had small kids, I’d be getting rid of them in any way possible!

    AndyZ is so cute!

Message me sometime if you become one of those ‘night’ people. I’m a night person, and usually can’t get to sleep till late, no matter how tired I am.

  25. Sandy Says:

I’m with you on the spiders. If they invade my space, they are history!

Same thing with snakes. My husband tries to use the line that some snakes are good. I tell him to kill them all when he sees them.

  26. kdiddy Says:

oh my god oh my god oh my god! do not want!

  27. TLC Says:

Scary spider! And, just so you know, they swim. A few years back, we had one in the backyard, and me, being all brave and Mama-Bearish tried to drown it in a bucket. It swam, and I FREAKED OUT. Now, I know the best way to kill them: hair spray. Damn the environment when there are creepies… one shot of Aqua Net and they freeze into crispy critters. Bingo: one ex-spider.
