Maybe It’s Because I Can NOT Dance?
Category: T.V. Junkie |

We are watching So You Think You Can Dance for the first time this summer and I am SO in love with this show. I find myself obsessing over certain choreographers (I was so sad when Napoleon and Tabitha(r) were judging last night because I knew that would mean they wouldn’t have done any choreography for the episode.) and am suddenly totally obsessed with the Contemporary dance style. I knew nothing about either of these things before. Also? There are two things about this show that make it completely better than any other reality TV talent show out there.

First? The host. Cat Deeley is one of the (if not THE) best host I’ve ever seen on one of these shows. She’s relaxed and natural and easily responds to the contestants and judges on the fly. I just love her. Most hosts of these type of shows tick me off, but she’s fantastic. I actually don’t roll my eyes at her like I do Ryan Seacrest or Tom Bergeron (sp?) - she makes me laugh! And my GOD that woman is tall.

Second? The results show for SYTYCD is actually GOOD. The elimination part isn’t drug out excessively and they add really cool stuff before and in between to make you want to watch. There’s always a group number that reminds you how talented these kids are and how amazing the show’s choreographers are. Here is the group number from last week (which happens to be of the Contemporary style) that has my man Mark (love him!) as the master of ceromonies in the dance. And Comfort, my top female does an AMAZING job in this number too. Just watch it…

I could watch that 100 times. I think that says a lot. They also feature new dancers from “the world of dance” every week on the results show that are also awesome. This is the ONLY show of this type that I actually watch all of the results instead of fast-forwarding to the end.

Now - anyone with me? Did you watch last night’s show? What did you think?

My Tivo decided to not record the first 20 min of the show last night, but I started watching it just before Mark and Chelsea’s first dance. My favorite was Twitchington’s Mia Michaels… but then I adore Mia’s choreography, though not her judging.

I’ve been a fanatic of this show since the 2nd season. I call it my one foray into Reality TV.

I haven’t seen last night’s episode yet, because I was busy watching last week’s show and results since I was on vacation. This is my favorite summer show too. It takes me nearly the whole week to actually watch the two episodes and by the time I’m finished there are two more! I read an article about how Nigel found Cat and just fell in love with her to be the hostess. The dancers are always awesome and fun, and even the bad dances I wouldn’t be able to master in 6 months, let alone 6 hours! I’m not a Comfort fan, but I do love her friend Josh.

  3. Hannah Says:

I didn’t see it but I do agree Cat Deeley is cool! I used to watch her on SM:TV (kids TV show on Saturday Mornings). Then on Stars in Their Eyes. (Which i very nearly auditioned for!)

Oh Zoot, welcome to the obsession. I started watching it during the second season and it’s one of the best parts of summer.

I love, love, love Mark and Chelsea (sp?) and “Twitchington.” It’s seriously one of the best reality shows, because it showcases people with actual talent who experience actual growth during the show. There’s usually one or two dancers who are extremely good at one style, say, hip-hop, who all of the sudden completely nail a contemporary routine and it’s absolutely fantastic.

  5. SpaceCase Says:

I LOVE this show! I missed it in the previous years, because the title made me think it was some sort of “you’ve been served” dance off. I had no idea the dancers would have to dance with partners in so many different styles.

I’m absolutely hooked. I love Cat, I love the judges, I love that while America votes make up the bottom 3 couples, that the judges finally decide who goes home - and that they split up couples when they need to.

Love it, love it, love it. Obviously. :)

  6. foodmomiac Says:

I LOVE the show too. And Cat D is truly the best host. She is so frickin’ nice. Also, I have a major crush on Mia Michaels and on Mark (is he gay?). Oh, and Twitch, of course. :-)

  7. Sarah Says:

We’re a week behind, but do watch. We actually fast forward through most of the judges comments, and we usually watch the results right after the performance show so we fast forward through all the recapping. But I LOVE the dances, I love watching the little videos before the performances to get to know these kids. And last week I LOVED the guest dance with Dominic and Hawk! Awesome!

  8. Nette Says:

I love this show! Your love for this opening choreography - I felt the same way 2 seasons ago w/ Wade Robson’s opening to Roisin Murphy’s “Bang Bang” http://www.vip.ie/video/video/show?id=1771549:Video:18798 I’ve watched it so many times and still get chills 2 years later!

In fact, you can actually see where Mia Michaels (the choreographer of the recent clip) is making a little bit of a tribute to Wade. This four hours is one of the best parts of summer programming.

  9. ladybughugs Says:

I watch this show and I’m hooked. I didn’t last night, it’s recorded, tho! I think I started watching it two years ago.

  10. ladybughugs Says:

I like that the kids can watch it. Lil’bug loves music and loves to dance. Scout thinks dancing is for girls so I like that he enjoys it and can see that there is a place for men in the world of dance.

  11. Alex Says:

I’ve been watching for years now, and have been singing it’s praises since the beginning. This. Show. Rocks. Welcome to the party!

  12. Kathy Says:

I’ve never watched So You Think You Can Dance, but I had a slight obsession with Bravo’s “Step It Up.” I half-expected it to be horrible, to be honest.

  13. Krista Says:

This is my first summer with SYTYCD and I’m hooked! I love Chelsie and Mark, but I must be honest and say Twitch and Kerington rock, too.

I really liked this dance: http://youtube.com/watch?v=w5el5ZogXK0

This is one of our favorite shows. We haven’t watched the last episode yet but will probably do it tonight or over the weekend. My oldest is into dance and this is one of her top shows to watch. She got me and her younger sister hooked.

  15. zeghsy Says:

ack! you can’t talk about it yet!!! monkey and i haven’t watched it yet.

mark and chelsea’s hip-hop (tabitha and napolean!) routine had me bawling at the end. BOTH TIMES I WATCHED IT! she’s so expressive. *sigh* love twitchington too.

  16. lisa-marie Says:

I love this show, too! My mom and I have been watching it since it started. Everything about this show is perfect (although I wish they wouldn’t let the Judges talk for so long). Other shows could learn a thing or two from this one!

  17. Sarah Says:

So you already know how I feel about all of the above.

EXCEPT.. my Tivo is suddenly not talking to its broadband adapter, so it DID NOT RECORD THE SHOW. Which is crap.

  18. Karin Says:

I have been watching this show since the first season and I love it. It’s my favorite reality show, period. It gets better each season and I have been exposed to so many different types of dancing that I might not have ever known about otherwise. My favorites last night were the contemporary pieces, and I don’t always love Mia Michaels choreography, but last night it was awesome. :)

  19. Amanda - The Mom Crowd Says:

I LOVE THIS SHOW. I started watching it last summer when I came home home with my baby. Welcome to the obsession! Cat Deely IS awesome. I so wish I could watch season 2, that I missed.

I always read EW.com’s recap the next morning. You must check it out for the truly obsessed. :)

This show and Top Model are the only reality competitions I watch. I LOVE SYTYCD and have been watching since season 2–it’s one of the best parts of summer (the one and so far only time I’ve actually cast a vote over the phone was for this show)! I just wish the ‘jidges’ wouldn’t blather on so much sometimes–that Adam Shankman person just wouldn’t shut up last week. Though it is fun to see what both Cat and Mary end up wearing (last week Mary sort of looked like a disco ball and Cat’s dress had a frill that ate her neck) and how many times Mary ends up screaming (that woman is OUT THERE). My favorite couples are Chelsi/Mark, ‘Twitchington’, and Katee/Josh. I love Wade Robson and Napolean/Tabitha as choreographers (but I miss Shane Sparks at times) and I like what Mia Michaels does for the most part, but sometimes I just don’t ‘get it’. Glad you found it!

  21. Adrienne Says:

I love this show, but then again I am a reality whore. Twitch is my favorite this year, which means he probably won’t win,cuz I’m a jinx that way.

  22. crystal Says:

I LOVE the show! I have watched it from the beginning and it is awesome. Gets better and better. My favorite couples are Twitch and Kerrington, Chelsie and Mark, and Joshua and Kate. Will is pretty awesome too! I love stories told through dance.

  23. amishpromqueen Says:

I absolutely love it…every season, everything about it…right down to the judges. Even when Nigel has something negative to say, you get the picture he’s still rooting for the dancers and being helpful, not just trying to be a jerk for the sake of ratings. And the talent is unbelieveable.

That, and, my 2.5 year old son likes to “watch the dancers” too.

  24. Amy Jo Says:

I love love love this show. I’ve been watching ever since the first episode and it only just keeps getting better. That said, I think last night’s routines were a little less exciting then they have been so far this season. Maybe the contestants are just getting worn out, but they all seemed to lack a little energy here and there.

But if you like Tabitha and Napoleon, well just wait until they start rolling out more Shane Sparks numbers. He is the ultimate hip hop choreographer. He’s only done one group routine so far this season, though!

  25. Stacey Says:

I just haven’t gotten into this show. Any of the dancing ones…and I have taken some dance lessons! Okay granted it was back in high school when I took them but still!

  26. Bethiclaus Says:

I haven’t watched last night’s episode yet, but I do love SYTYCD. We’ve watched it from the beginning, because I miss the days when I used to dance. I like Cat, but I have to say that, even though he’s cheese-monkey, I think Tom Bergeron is the best reality show host EVAH.

Anyway, I don’t have a favorite yet this season. Oh wait. Yes, I do. Joshua.

  27. mrsgryphon Says:

I love SYTYCD… for the choreographer and the talent and the music, but also in part because of the way the “elimination” is handled. I love that the phone-in audience votes the bottom 3 and then they get a chance to show they deserve to stay and the judges make the final call. I’ve always hated AI (for example) when a truly talented singer gets sent home because the audience didn’t vote for them (saving a lesser singer instead!). SYTYCD appeals to my Canadian justice sensibility, I guess!!

  28. nic Says:

This is the first summer I’ve watched it too and I”m hooked. Plus I want all of Cat Deeley’s clothes! And to be thin enough to wear them all!

I am so in love with Chelsie and Mark and Josh and Katee. I could watch them over and over and over again. And thanks to youtube, i have!

  29. Rachael Says:

I skipped over the comments because I haven’t watched last nights episode yet. I LOVE this show. I discovered it in Season 2 and am totally obsessed with it, I was SO excited when they started showing promos for it on Fox for the new season. I’ve learned quite a bit about dance, and have also come to appreciate contemporary dance a lot more. You NEED to go check out Kameron & Lacey’s contemporary routine from one or two season back (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IEguAROS4tw). It made me cry. I love watching some of the routines I love more than once on you tube.

Also, if you want to be crazy, I discovered a blog called Blogging So You Think You Can Dance ( http://bloggingsytycd.blogspot.com/) that often has videos etc after the show each week. I do posts every week but I haven’t done it this week yet since I obviously haven’t watched it yet. And EW’s recap each week is really good. Sorry, but like I said, I am obsessed. Enjoy the show!

  30. Devilish Southern Belle Says:

I’m watching when I think about it….though I like Courtney Galliano best :)

  31. Victoria Says:

Love it love it love it love it LOVE IT!

  32. Marlene Says:

My eldest daughter (13 and a dancer) and I love this show. It’s our very favorite ever! She’s loving Mark and Chelsie H. and I love Twitch and Kherington this season. I love the results as well and the amazing choreography. Tabitha and Napoleon are new this season and we love them so far! After each week’s show, my daughter picks a favorite dance move and makes her daddy try it with her. He is not a dancer so the results are pretty hysterical!

  33. blogversary Says:

I LOVE this show; so does my hubby. I too I was sad that Tab and Nap were judging, b/c it mean no dance, but they are such a cool couple.

  34. Sara Says:

I’m so so so SO with you on this. I used to dance, so I was all about it from the very first season, and each year gets better and better. One of the things I appreciate is the commentary from all of the judges. What they say is actually insightful compared to the way the judges comment on shows like American Idol.

  35. supertiff Says:

my mother is IN LOVE with this show. i’ve never actually seen it, but my mom insists on giving me blow-by-blow commentary all the time. it’s kind-of annoying.

  36. yueqing Says:

That show is showing in Singapore, South East Asia too!I watched the show for the first time d other day, the contemporary dance episode; and I was so awed by their performances, it was so incredible..

Agree that show is great, and the host is natural and nice!!

My name is chinese, so prolly not many people will know how to read it =P

Hi! to Zoot and bloggers!! I am not a blogger nor a mum, but I enjoy reading your blog, Zoot! Cheers!!

  37. Kandi Says:

I love this show. Three top fav’s are Twitchington, Chelsea and Mark and Josh and Katee. I can’t wait for tonight!!
