Turning 29. For The 5th Time.
Category: Randomly | 72 Comments »

Today was/is my birthday and I celebrated in the normal mother fashion: I got pooped on. TWICE. Gotta love babies. Especially since you can’t eat them.

I took LilZ to the dermatologist this morning for an appointment we booked three months ago. Our dermatologist is popular, to say the least. He’s been counting down the days to the appointment for ages as he has faithfully tried every OTC solution he can for his skin (Yes – Even the one you’re about to mention. We tried that one too.) and we were ready to try something of the Rx variety. We left with a powerful sulfa-based antibiotic and a topical Retina-A variation gel. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that this does the trick. Like Junior High isn’t tough enough without having to deal with skin issues. (Says the girl who was actually called “pizza face” in Junior High. How cliche is that?)

I did wrap my day up with Blueberry Muffin Batter Ice Cream to celebrate turning 33. Have you heard of anything more awesome than that? No. YOU HAVE NOT. It was the most awesome thing I’ve ever tasted. And I’m the one who made her wedding cake out of Krispy Kreme donuts! This ice cream was even better than that.

So – here comes another year. Let’s hope it brings me a skinnier ass and a weekly maid service.

    Happy, happy birthday!

  2. Procrastamom Says:

    Happy Birthday Zoot!

Also wanted to reassure you and LilZ that the Retin A gel has worked wonders for our 16 year-old daughter (along with the Pill, but that’s really not an option for your young man now is it…but the doc recommended that same type of antibiotic or the Pill and we chose the latter, so they’re both probably great). It’s not going to work overnight – Ashley is on her second 3 month dose – but tell him to give it time. And both me and her father suffered terrible acne through high school…it’s got to be genetic. Acne suckz.

  3. Catherine Says:

Happiest birthday wishes to you Miss Zoot! If 33 does indeed result in a skinnier ass and weekly maid service, I want a do-over. I got neither.

  4. Mom24 Says:

Happy, Happy Birthday. Why haven’t I ever made a wish like that? I could so use a skinnier ass and DAILY maid service. Yes, I’m greedy, but if I’m winning a wish, I might as well dream Big!

Hope you find something to help LilZ. I don’t understand people who don’t try to help their kids with their acne. My DD has a good friend who has terrible acne, and has never been to a dermatalogist. It’s affecting her personality, and the physical and emotional scares will last forever. You’re a good mom.

Are you back to work yet? I can’t imagine throwing that into the mix you’re juggling.

    take care.

  5. Type (little) a Says:

I had horrible acne as a teen, not so bad on my face, but all over my back and chest, as well as a little on my forehead. I took Tetracycline and Retin A (the ointment, not the drying gel), and it was soo much better. I hope it works for him. I remember the pain SO ACUTELY.

I’ve never taken it, but my old boyfriend swore by Accutane. It’s so toxic to developing fetuses (not that lilz would have to worry about that) that women are cautioned to use 2 methods of birth control, and there is a pregnant woman with a line through it on the back of each blister packed pill. I taped one into my birth control pill pack.

  6. Type (little) a Says:

    D’OH!

I did mean to say Happy Birthday!

  7. Stephanie Says:

Happy Happy Birthday! That ice cream sounds AWESOME! Where did you find it?

  8. Marilyn Says:

OMFG… I can’t believe I haven’t been all over you with the happy birthday wishes before now!!

And, for the record, that ice cream sounds AWESOME. As in I almost wish I was still pregnant so I could convince my hubs to go out and get me some. You HAVE to tell me what brand that is.

I want to focus on the fact that it’s your birthday and celebrate that fact but let’s face it, I’m totally distracted by the ice cream now.

  9. Jan Says:

I have been reading you for a few months and imagine my surprise to read this post- I celebrated MY 29th birthday (for the 6th time) today! I spent mine in the pool, though. No poop. Or acne )OK- maybe a little.

  10. Kristabella Says:

    Happy Birthday!

That ice cream sounds delish! Much better than being pooped on!

  11. canape Says:

Happy birthday! I hope this is your best year ever.

  12. Elyse Says:

    Did you try birth control?
    I am TOTALLY kidding. :-)

    Happy birthday!!

  13. cagey Says:

I did not have skin issues until my 20s. And then, I had NO ONE to guide me. Good for you for showing LilZ that you GET HELP when you are not happy. I only just got help THIS YEAR for my skin issues. *sigh*

  14. cagey Says:

    Oops. Happy birthday, too! :-)

  15. Audrey Says:

    Happy birthday!

  16. Tracy Says:

Happy B-day! Just had my 40th on the 3rd..yikes!

I had horrible acne as a teen and into my 20’s. Went to the dermo religously – tried everything including retin A, tetracycline, etc..nothing seemed to clear it up though long term. It always came back. Finally, I took Acutane for 3 mo’s. It was a miracle drug. I had the most beautiful, perfect skin within days and never had a breakout again. Really important for us girls to NOT get pregnant while on it – but LilZ should be ok if you decide to go that way. I highly recommend it. I wish I would have done it sooner instead of trying all the temporary stuff that made my skin red and peel. Plus, the tetracycline stained my teeth. Oh…the life of a teen. Good luck with it all.

  17. Erin Says:

Happy Birthday! Also, kudos for taking lilZ’s skin prob as serious as it surely is to him. I hate hearing about parents who say “it’s a phase we all go through- you’ll grow out of it” since that is not always the case. As you implied, being a teen is hard enough without a kick me sign on your mug!

  18. JaniceNW Says:

I’m all for a skinnier ass and a maid. Can ya send me them? My birthday was 4 months ago but I’m thirteen loooooong years older than you.

Happy Birthday!!!! AndyZ was you pre-present, yes?

  19. Rachael Says:

Happy Birthday! So happy. i hope everything works out with the dermatologist. My sister had really bad acne as a teen and it was pretty difficult. I hope that someday soon his skin will be as awesome as he is!

  20. Elaine Says:

Oh yay, happy birthday! Ice cream is a fabulous way to celebrate. :)

  21. jamielynnlynn Says:

    Happy (ahem) 29th Birthday!!

May this year be even better than 32!! You can’t really compete with the last couple months of poop though, huh?

  22. Lisa C Says:

Happy birthday! And if it makes LilZ feel better about himself you can tell him that my 13 yo daughter saw a picture of him with NikkiZ a while back and said, “Oh, how cute.” Since said daughter is crazy about toddlers and *not* crazy about boys it shocked me when I figured out she was talking about LilZ. Now excuse me while I go lock her in her room for the next five years.

  23. Maria Says:

    Happy belated birthday!

  24. Amber Says:

Happy, happy birthday Miss Zoot! I never realized that you and I are the same age. You look MUCH younger than I do. I kind of hate you for that. ;)

Here’s to a great year ahead!

  25. Katy Says:

Happy Birthday! I would like to know very much where you got the ice cream from. I sort of need it. Right now.

  26. Kathy Says:

    Happy Birthday!

  27. del Says:

Hey, happy birthday Zoot! I can’t believe that you are ‘older’ than me! I keep turning 27 (for 6 years now I think).
I’m glad you had ice cream to celebrate. I wish I had ice cream, now. Must get ice cream. Where is the damn ice cream? OK so I have no ice cream, can you eat some for me?

  28. Dawn Says:

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

  29. sam Says:

    Happy happy birthday!!

I really don’t understand when parents don’t help their children with acne – LilZ is lucky that you’re so understanding!

I too was called pizza face in school. I think the emotional scaring is more damning then the physical ones. Eventually I got a prescription for Accutane and it was the best thing EVER! The acne was gone and never ever came back with the same ferocity. I’m thinking about LilZ and hope you find something that works for him!!

  30. Stacey Says:

Happy Birthday!! Besides being pooped on it sounds like it was a good day! Where ever did you find that ice cream??? I MUST try it.

Oh and I always say I am about to celebrate the 5th anniversary of my 29th Birthday. ;) Or is it 4th? Gonna be the same age in a few weeks. Too early, no coffee yet, can’t figure out math.

  31. Carly Says:

    Happy Birthday Zoot!!!

  32. zoot Says:

Because Accutane has so many SERIOUS side effects (although rare) and it can be toxic, the dermatologists like to at least try a high power antibiotic first. And for the type of acne LilZ has, it seems the antibiotics actually work better (at least the sulfa-based ones, the “cyclene” family is different). I’m hoping we dont have to resort to Accutane because MrZ was on that stuff and it SCARES me.

  33. Susan Says:

Happy birthday to one of my favorite bloggers. I hope you have a fantastic day and wish you poop that stays inside of diapers. What a birthday wish, eh?

  34. JP Says:

Happy birthday! That ice cream sounds divine. Is it a punishment or a curse to be born during Ice Cream Month??

  35. jessica Says:

    Happy Birthday, Zoot!

and OMG – I swear! I’ve had blueberry muffin batter ice cream not once, but many times. A local dairy farm by us makes ice cream in all these krazee flavors, and the BBM is one of our FAVES! Right next to Graham cracker cake batter and marachino cherry chocolate chip.

If you’re ever in Maryland, call me – we’ll do ice cream :)

  36. Fraulein N Says:

Happy Belated Birthday! You make … um, 29 … look good!

  37. katie Says:

happy birthday zoot! i hope you had a great day! :)

  38. Sarah Says:

Happy birthday! Sounds like a perfect day to me. Hope the doc had something to help lilZ! Skin issues suck. This coming from the girl on so many fertility hormones that my face has now gone back to it’s junior high look and requires good old Proactive.

  39. lfm Says:

Happy Birthday Zoot! Just another glamorous day in the life of a mom!!! :-)

  40. bad penguin Says:

I don’t even like ice cream and I think blueberry muffin batter ice cream sounds good.

Happy birthday! Sorry I’m a day late.

  41. jomama Says:

    happy belated birthday, Zoot!

  42. michelle/weaker vessel Says:

Happy birthday, chickadee! I’ve got a package of random stuff I’ve collected for you over the last year or that I will get to you sooner or later. Also, feel free to borrow my “33″ birthday crown if you think it might come in handy!

I’m glad to hear that LilZ got meds, but watch out for candida overgrowth issues! Gut health can be a major problem for some people who take extended courses of antibiotics. Probiotic supplements or lotsa yogurt may help balance things out.

  43. Carolyn Says:

    Happy (late) birthday!

And oh my, where you do get blueberry muffin batter ice cream?!?! It sounds like heaven. In a bowl.

  44. Sara Says:

    Happy birthday, Cancer girl!

    July birthdays are the best!

  45. secha Says:

    Happy Birthday, Zoot!!

I used the Retina-A stuff, and it worked WONDERS. I had that, and another face gel (one for morning, and one for night), and then an anti-biotic I had to take. It cleared up my face completly within a month or two. I still have some of the Retina-A that I use when I do have my rare breakout. Hopefully it’ll do the trick for him. =)

  46. Valeta Says:

    Happy Birthday!

I want some of that ice cream. MMMM.

  47. Angie Says:

Happy Birthday, Zoot! You deserve all the Blueberry Muffin Batter ice cream you can stand!

    Happy Birthday!

Happy Belated Birthday! I’m glad you had a good day :-)

  50. monkey Says:

I started off on Retin-A but my skin was so delicate when I was young that I was demoted to the one by Galderma…ahhh, I forget what that one’s called now (wait! I remember…Differin). At 19 the R-A made my face slough off so badly that it used to physically hurt, esp. in brutal Montreal winters. That was WORSE than the original acne. I had to go on a round of Tetracyclene at least once a year. But Differin + Tetracyclene, and occasionally some Bezomycene kept me 98% clear.

OTOH, Retin-A from my mid-20 onwards was AWESOME.

My acne mysteriously cleared up once I moved to Los Angeles so I’ve let my prescription expire (I’m 29 now). I get my Retinol fix off a Neutrogena anti-aging cream, it’s enough for me at this point.

    It gets better LilZ…I promise!

  51. monkey Says:

    Oh, and happy birthday Zoot!

Sorry to hear about LilZ’s grandmother. x

  63. Rachael Says:

    Happy Birthday Zoot! :D

I truly hate doing so, but I, too, will jump on the Accutane bandwagon. My ex had horrible acne in high school and now his skin is smoother than a baby’s butt. A freckled baby’s butt. Differin gel also worked for him, too. I’m thinking of getting some of that myself… fricking adult-onset zits.

  69. Sarah Says:

I had some moderate acne as a teenager, went to two different dermatologists plus a regular doctor with no results. However, I did finally find http://www.acne.org. It has it’s own regimen, but what’s great is it also has over-the-counter and prescription reviews from those who have used them. I would definitely check it out (I would root for their regimen, it’s worked great for me so far) :) Good luck.

  70. Jem Says:

    Happy Birthday!!! :)

  71. Mary Says:

I missed your b-day because I was on vacay, so happy birthday!

Also, I also had some of that blueberry muffin batter last week, and I have to say I was not disappointed! I got white chocolate chips and graham cracker crust mixed in. Yum-o!

Hope your birthday was a great one!

  72. Moogie Says:

I’m sorry I missed your birthday. It sounds like you had a great time though, even if you did get pooped on…twice (I was out of town and didn’t get on computer for a week!). My mom’s birthday is the same day as yours!!! Only, she is now 81. :)
