AndyZ’s First Tent Experience.
Category: Adventures | 18 Comments »

Remember when we did this, like three days before AndyZ was born? Well – we’re doing it again! Tonight! With AndyZ participating outside of my uterus this time! And MrZ is going to come too! And I’ve officially used too many exclamation points in this entry.

But seriously…very excited. (Insert extra exclamation points here.)

I’m a little nervous about how this will work with AndyZ in tow, however. I’m thinking about brining his baby papasan and just letting him sleep in that. I’m not sure if him sleeping next to me (like he usually does) will bode well when there are extra people lying on either side of us. Those people aren’t used to him being there. I’m also wondering how the middle-of-the-night feedings will go. Hopefully he won’t fuss too much and no one else camping will even know he’s awake. But – I’m also bracing myself for screamfest 2008, which will involve waking up the dozen other families sleeping around us. As long as they don’t kick us out of the park at midnight, I can live with making everyone hate us.

Any tips for sleeping in a tent with an infant? Especially that involve muzzling potential cries? I’m open to any suggestions. Especially the ones that involve doses of benadryl.

Always good to keep an open mind to the Benadryl solution ;)

He will probably do just fine. We took the baby to an outdoor afternoon picnic a few weeks ago, and I figured she’d fuss and get cranky. Guess what? She slept the WHOLE time. Something about that outdoor air I guess. Maybe the air will affect AndyZ too (fingers crossed!)

So exciting!!! I wish that I had some tips for you, because I wanted to go camping with Madeline this summer but Hubby veto’ed it.

I say to go with the Papasan, though – wherever he sleeps best is where he should be, you know? Just to make it easier of everyone.

Good luck – I can’t wait to hear about it and see pictures! You guys do the coolest family stuff.

Pictures of course, will be required. Have no help for you on the “baby-in-a-tent” question. Could he have his own tent? Probably not. See, I have no answers. But have fun!

We were going to do this this weekend too, then my mother-in-law decided to come. Phflth.

We have quite a few friends who have camped when their kids were infants and one frequent thing is a separate mom and baby tent. Just a little pup tent, but it seems to keep everyone else from being disturbed. Have fun!!

I have no suggestions… outside of the benedryl. The great outdoor air could work wonders though. Good luck! Can’t wait to hear about how it goes.

I took our baby camping many times this summer from age 4w to 4m and she really liked it (I think). For sleeping we had her in a fleece blanket sandwich; double layer thick under her, double layer over her and a hat, the under is as important as the over since heat gets lost into the ground/airmattress too easily. She isn’t a wiggler so we didn’t have to worry about blankets on her face. Around midnight I would move her to our bed for feeding and more sleep. The best thing I did was make a diaper ‘station’. I used one of the large plastic totes I packed gear in; you can put all the supplies in it (once you unpack) and then use the tote itself for diaper changing platform. The floor is fine at home but dirt and grass is not so fun and this keeps the diapers etc clean and dry.

We took our son tenting for the first time at 6-weeks old. He and I ended up sleeping in the car around 1:00 am, because I found that it was impossible to nurse comfortably in the tent as there was no back support. I was just figuring out how to nurse lying down, but on the slippery sleeping bag, KJ just kept sliding away. It was really frustrating. The next time we went (for 2 weeks, when he was 3 months old) I took a sheet, folded it in half and sewed it shut to build a liner for the sleeping bag out of it. Then there was no more slithering and nursing was easy. No one else even knew there was a baby in the tent – the nighttime feedings were smooth and easy.

I wish our botanical gardens would do something so cool. Have fun!

When I saw you were doing this again all I could think of was….I hope she brings tennis shoes this time!!

You, my dear, are a VERY BRAVE woman. I hope you have a great time, though.

I’m in awe that anyone would camp with an infant, or even a toddler. Maybe it’s because I abhor camping? Good luck!
