My Boob Is Running A Fever
Category: I stress, therefore I blog | 31 Comments »

I had meant to write an entry by now for NaBloPoMo. Unfortunately, two things are going on today that are distracting me. First? The election. I can not think of anything else. I have cried 100 times already today – either out of pride or fear or hope. I can not even begin to discuss how amazing it felt to cast my vote for Obama with my teenage son looking on as I put my faith in a better future for him. Everytime I tried to write something it came out OBAMAOBAMAOBAMA and I was afraid that might get annoying.

The second thing distracting me? I seem to be working on a clogged duct in my right boob. My boob hurts beyond any pain I’ve experienced since the first weeks of nursing. My boob is also very hot. I keep going around saying, “My boob has a fever! My boob has a fever!” because evidently when election fever and boob fever are combined? Boob fever wins.

I’m going to spend some time elsewhere tonight – probably twitter – so I can discuss my anxiety with other Obama people.

In the meantime, can I please share with you a video that speaks to my soul. It stirs up amazing emotion in me and it embodies everything that has inspired me this election season. This video speaks of the hope Obama has stirred in me and I just felt I needed to share.

Ick. I just got over a breast infection / clogged duct / mastitis type thing. It was hideous. Take care of yourself. I hope it doesn’t get any worse.

Catch you on Twitter where we can tweet away our anxiety. Or try to anyway!

  2. Jezer Says:

I got a little teary at the voting kiosk today too. What a great thing for LilZ to be a part of. I took Al with me, and although I’m pretty sure he won’t remember it, I know I will.

Hope your boob feels better. If it doesn’t, I think most doctors (well, nurses, actually) will call you in a Rx for mastitis if you describe the symptoms just right (Red, feverish, sore booby? Oh, yeah, baby.).

  3. cagey Says:

Be careful of mastitis! You probably already know how to take of it (massage while nursing and while in the shower), but just remember to do it. You don’t want to get sick. Poor thing – that is painful.

I? Me? Am so excited, scared and hopeful about the election.

  4. Monica Says:

Try to get some antibiotics as soon as possible — mastitis gets worse so quickly! Feel better.

    Go Obama!!!

  5. mamatsidale Says:

I am so sorry to hear about the engorgement (?) this is my second time nursing and so far I have been lucky. Have you tried cabbage leaves? Anyhow, I share your anxiety about OBAMA. I should be in bed now but I don’t think I will sleep without know what the future of our country will be…

  6. Heather Says:

That video was fantastic! I’m a little teary eyed now! “There is nothing false about our hope!” <3 I really, really hope that Obama is the President.

  7. stacey Says:

I am crying now. I saw that posted on Lisa’s blog and didn’t have the chance to watch it. I am a bundle of nerves, should be asleep because of sickness but I can’t….not until I know we can. :)

  8. Michelle Says:

That is a most excellent video, Miss Zoot.

Hot compress for the boob fever? Or ice? I forget.

  9. HollowSquirrel Says:

oh i hope it’s not mastitis…that’s like pain beyond words and usually involves a hot spot on the ol’ boob. Are you getting chills (not from the video, but the boob)? Feel better & YAY YAY YAY Obama!

  10. bessie.viola Says:

Ugh, stupid boob sickness. Hot baths with boob underwater always help me. :)

Hope you feel better soon – I’m watching all the results come in right along with you!

  11. Gigi Says:

Moist heat, massage if clogged duct, if it’s mastitis get an antibiotic asap. I had a bout with mastitis with each of my babies- no fun for sure.
Feel better soon, and happy happy on the returns!

  12. Jamie Says:

Amazing video. Thanks so much for sharing.

  13. ksmaybe Says:

Thank you for sharing the video. Brought tears to my eyes. That’s sort of how the day has been for me. Swells of pride, hope, and tears of joy, fear and hope. I took my son to the polls too. He’s only 1, but I cast that ballot for him, for me, and for all of us. As a Chicagoan, I can’t claim much personal stake in tonight’s outcome. But I’m proud to say I went and voted anyway.

  14. Clancy Says:

Ack, clogged ducts are the worst! I was getting them about (seriously) 3-4 times a week for a couple of months.

  15. Amy Says:

Seriously – a clogged duct is worse than labor! I wish you the best. I had one that lasted for over a month and I swore like a sailor every single time she latched on to that boob for the entire month! Moist heat (almost constantly, as if that’s possible!), massage, nursing on it (preferably after the moist heat), and I’m sorry, it’s TMI, but sometimes you need to bug at it a little to get it to open up – put on gloves and be sterile about it. Oh, and have a big drink and maybe a pain-killer first!

  16. Rachael Says:

Oh no! I hope your boob’s fever breaks soon.

  17. SupaCoo Says:

I’m ready to cry! Not over your boob (although, ouch!) but over amazement, happiness, inspiration, love! YAY!! Obama!!! More !!! – !!!!

  18. Nienuh Says:

Congratulations to you all with Obama winning. It’s early morning here (Netherlands) and i’m looking at the news. Crying and exited people all over. Getting teary myself.

This is a moment of great importance for America, for the world. I hope he gets the chance to make the change.

    For now… PAAAAAAAAAAAAAARTY!

  19. vague Says:

Great video – I watched that over and over during the primaries, and it still makes me feel all misty-eyed. His acceptance speech tonight did, too.

Like you, I am a little blue dot in a big red state, and sometimes that can feel lonely. Watching the poll returns tonight with my friends and coworkers, and feeling the excitement and emotion when the polls closed on the west coast and we knew Obama had won — it was the greatest feeling ever.

This morning, when I connected that arrow next to Obama’s name, I knew I was going to be part of something great. I hoped it, at least. And it’s HAPPENED! Holy crap! Seeing the energy sweeping the nation, it doesn’t feel like blue and red states anymore. It doesn’t feel so lonely anymore.

  20. Maria Says:

I missed you yesterday. :-) I saw that video yesterday and I was very moved.

  21. Maria Says:

P.S. I hope you get rid of your boob fever soon.

  22. mama speak Says:

what they said about your boob fever; which I’m pretty sure is mastitis if it’s got the fever going. I’ve had more than my share of the clogged duct, but never went into full blown mastitis. It was so awful w/just a clogged duct I can’t even imagine. Anywho, they tell you moist heat, but found that ice packs helped the most for me. Nurse or pump every couple hours (preferably nurse) and massage it while doing this; massage it toward the way out (TMI, I know) to help break it up and move it along. These are awful, I never could sleep even when I had them.
Good luck, hang in there and
GO PRESIDENT OBAMA! (I cried tonight watching him speak.)

  23. lynne Says:

Hi Zoot, Congratulations on helping to make a brand new world. I have never been prouder of America. Last night I was watching along on CNN Europe. Wow what a turnout.

I was bouncing on my couch with nerves for two reasons. I knew my darling sister in law was in labour and had been since the early morning. I am glad to say baby Sebastian arrived safely this morning. What a day to be born on :)

  24. lynne Says:

P.s I hope your boob gets better soon. I’m worried for it.

  25. Jem Says:

I was so excited when I heard the news about Obama! I totally thought of you too (I’m from New Zealand).

  26. Tara Says:

I LOVE that video–actually looked it up on YouTube on Monday, and found myself singing the song yesterday, and now? Now, I am so happy, so proud, so amazed at what we accomplished yesterday.

    Yes we can, indeed! :-)

  27. Hannah Says:

I actually love twitter – I can drop it read as much as like and fly off again. if I wanna comment then I do it if I dont I vanish anyway hehe

  28. melanie Says:

ouch — that hot boob thing is terrible! the boob pain was more painful than the c-section recovery for me! wishing you good boob health. =)

  29. ladybughugs Says:

Plugged duct. Been there, done that, too many times! I wish I had some other advice beyond what’s already been suggested above. massage in a warm/hot shower. Nurse on that side first, you don’t want milk coming in on that side while he’s nursing on the other. If possible, nurse AndyZ with his chin towards the ‘knot’ there’s more pressure from him on that spot which should help move things along. Pump on that side while he nurses on the other.

I’m very excited about the next chapter of our country’s history.

  30. Courtney Says:

i was glued to CNN all day Tuesday. I know what OBAMAOBAMAOBAMA feels like.

As for your boob, ouch. I haven’t had that yet and hope not to. Here’s to hoping that you unclog soon!

  31. The Benevolent Dictator Says:

You get all nice, Obama supporters for commenters. I seem to attract religious zealots and naysayers. I think its hilarious and ironic that our kchs class, once a class of religious zealots themselves, have moved so left. I remember feeling like such a sore thumb when we’d have talks in class because I’d think…that doesn’t sound quite right. Go Class of 93!

Glad that the boob feels better. I had mastitis three times in a row and then two staph infections when I was nursing Graeme. Just writing that brings back icky memories.
