Ready or Not…Here I Come!

DSC_0249

Happy New Year! I started the year by…not posting to my blog! I promise you that’s not a sign of things to come. That’s just a sign of me having a great first day of the year because I was busy with my kids. We fed the ducks in the freezing cold – which turned out not to be that great of an idea. The ducks in Huntsville are not scared of people and when they’re hungry? Will essentially walk up and take the bread out of your hand. I know it’s probably pretty lame to be afraid of ducks…but I’ve never claimed not to be lame. I tried to act brave for NikkiZ, but eventually I dumped the bread in a pile on the ground and ran away screaming. Or something just as inspirational.

We also discovered last week that NikkiZ seems to finally be old enough to sit through a movie at the theater. So, we took her to the second one in a week: Bolt. It was a really cute move but I would rather have not seen it in 3D. 3D movies are fun to me for the first 15 minutes, then they get on my nerves because I hate wearing the glasses. Also – is it just me or does Miley Cyrus kinda sound like an 80-year old smoker when she talks? I love her, don’t get me wrong, but her voice is very raspy.

I also got to do the one thing I think about the most often in my life: nap. LilZ watched AndyZ while NikkiZ and I took our naps yesterday. 2 solid hours. Of course, I had to bribe him, but still! Best! New! Year’s! Day! Ever!

I am so incredibly optimistic about this year it’s not even funny. I feel like I’ve found so many points of inspiration in 2008, I can’t wait to finally do something with all of that energy. I’ve found amazing artists and bloggers this year that motivate me to wake up the right side of my brain a little bit (It is the right side that does the creative crap, right? Maybe I should read up on that a bit first?) and quit depending so much on the inner math geek to get me by.

Not that there’s anything wrong with her…she led me to my career and my husband. But she can be a little drab sometimes, you know? I blame her for the boring wardrobe choices and crappy taste in light fixtures. I’m just kinda wanting her to be a bit cooler, you know?

I also want to spend more time laughing this year. It’s not a pretty sight, me laughing. But it sure does feel nice.

Happy New Year! Glad you had too much fun to post yesterday. Just wanted to leave a comment to say that that pic of you and LilZ is the cutest picture ever!

  5. Little Dutch Girl says:

I love the picture of you and LilZ! happy new year to you and your family

  6. Danielle says:

I think you look great laughing!

Also: terrified of ducks. It’s bad when you have food, but when you don’t? Abject horror. They charge. They’re an army of quacking, charging, fury. And the ones at LSU have these weird crests that look like chewed gum.

  7. Mel says:

Sounds like the perfect way to start the new year!! Happy 2009

  8. Tanya says:

I hope my son is just as awesome as LilZ in 6 years.

  9. Janssen says:

Aw, that picture of LilZ and you just kills me. You’re so cute!

  10. Sierra says:

I worked at an ice cream store as a teenager and used to give all the dead sugar cones to the ducks and geese across the street after my shift. Until one day, one got a little too close, and then they all followed him and the story ends with me standing on a bench on one foot screaming because they would not go away so that I could leave. Naturally, now they terrify me!

Also, can’t wait to follow your creative journey here!

  11. Sandy says:

Sounds like you had a great New Year’s Day!

I had the same thing happen to me the last time I fed them bread.

Now if I could get rid of this sinus/chest cold crud I have had all week, my new year would be going much better!

  12. Lisa says:

I love those photos! HNY. :)

  13. amanda says:

I completely agree with you about Miley’s voice. I am always saying to my husband that it’s so disconcerting to hear her speak. Peppy little teeny bopper, husky old-broad voice. And it’s not even deep or smoky in a sexy way; it’s more like “get that poor child a cough drop.” I have to mute her whenever she’s on TV.

  14. Rachael says:

I think I’ll add “spend more time laughing” to my list of stolen New Years Resolutions.

  15. SupaCoo says:

I freaking HATE ducks, and all birds really. We went to a bird sanctuary last week (WHY???) and I would scream and take cover every time one flew at my head, which meant they sent out a bird communication to all the other birds in the park saying ‘Hey, check this out, diving at her head is SO fun.’

    Great NY Resolutions, btw!

  16. Jem says:

I love that last photo! Happy New Year!

  17. PomJob says:

Happy new year, Zoot! I hope it’s the best yet!

    Happy New Year, Zoot!

  19. Sounds like the year’s off to an excellent start! Thanks so much to you & LilZ for your company today! I am glad I got to get out!

  20. Courtney says:

You started your new year off with a bang! Awesome! I’ve heard that what you do and the way you are on the 1st of January sets the tone for the entire year… sounds like 2009 is going to be fabulous for you. If a bit scary duck infested.

  21. lynne says:

I am sure it is a very preety sight to see you laugh.

And choosing the right lighting fictures is hard when the choice is lame and your on a budget. Top tip I have some outdoor lights inside my house just because they reminded me of portholes on a ship.

I went to art school so, I can blame my weird choice on being arty and toss my hair ( if I had any… I wear it short).

  22. Heather says:

That last picture nearly made me cry! Geez, stop bein so cute, it’s dangerous ;)

  23. Maria says:

I think you smile/laugh is contagious. That photo is awesome.

  24. Maria says:

P.S. Did you decide on a photo project?

  25. Ashlea says:

Laughing is the best! and hey… we all look ugly when we do it. I know I do!!

  26. ladybughugs says:

That pic of you and Lil’Z? Beautiful. I love the variety of blues that all coordinate so well together.

I think a nap is a perfect way to get a year started! Happy New Year!

  27. Margaret says:

I stitch as my creative outlet. You can see some of my work on my stitching blog. I was trying to remember where you lived to see if there were any great needlepoint stores there. Tell me and I’ll ferret them out for you.

I got a new Canon Rebel for Christmas and my plan is to learn to use it to be more creative. Maybe I’ll join you in your 52 weeks of things I love besides my kids who are the subject of 99.9% of my current photography

Hi. I’m Kim.

This is my blog that I've been writing on since January, 2004. I call myself Zoot as it's a derivative of an old childhood nickname. I used to write about my struggles to have children, but eventually I succeeded and now, I write a lot about those kids. I don't use my kid's exact names simply because if someone Googles their very unique names in the future, I don't want them stumbling upon my entries about boobsweat. I mean, would you hire someone whose Mom writes openly about such topics? NO. YOU WOULD NOT.

I love taking pictures and carry my camera (almost) everywhere I go. This means you'll see a lot of photos on this site. I also periodically post recipes I like as I've been slowly (but surely) learning to cook and I like to share my discoveries. Finally? I'm an annoying pop culture fanatic so I'll periodically ramble about Hunger Games or the latest Parks and Recreation.

I hope you like it here. If not? Please don't tell me. I cry easily.
