Here is an entry on my blog. That stinks only slightly less than my dog.
Me: I wrote a poem for the kids’ teacher’s today, for a craft I’m making them. It sucks BAD.
LilZ: What…did you rhyme, like, “Daughter” with…”Taught Her” or something cheesy like that?
Me: First of all, that’s not cheesy. That’s AWESOME. Where were you when I was writing that damn thing? Second of all…when you said “Daughter” my brain went immediately to “Slaughter”. I definitely suck at poem writing.
****************
It’s Teacher Appreciation week at the kids’ school. Since I am very fortunate to find myself really liking all of my kids’ teachers, I decided I needed to make sure I celebrate. I brought them candy today as a preface to my token Glitter Glue/Cardstock/Kid Photo gift which I do variations of for every event and/or holiday. (Many in my family are saying, “Yes. Yes she does. I can vouch for that.”) I am not naturally crafty, so I make due with things that require no skill. I’ve learned two things: If you can add a NAME and a PHOTO to a craft, it doesn’t matter how much talent it takes to make it. The receiver will love it no matter what! So, I took a photo of the kid they teach, added a cheesy poem (not using the word “slaughter”), and used glitter glue to write their name. The result? Most Awesome Teacher’s Gift EVAH. If I do say so myself.
And for those of you who just must know how cheesy my poem is? Here’s a copy JUST FOR YOU.
Some parents who work away from the home,
Have a difficult task they must face.
It’s not their job that challenges them so,
But finding their child a place.
A place to be loved and taught
And most importantly for a child: To Play!
A place to be hugged and read to,
That offers them kindness throughout the day.
It’s tough to find people who fit the dream,
To tend to your child and stand in your shoes,
I’m lucky to have found that place and those teachers,
As nurturing and wonderful as you.
I’m fairly certain that Mrs. Beeler, my high school English teacher, just woke up having a nightmare just now and she has NO IDEA WHY.

You’re right photos make everything better.
Cheesy can be quite sweet as is the time you took to make it.
That’s a sweet poem! It’s cool that you adore all of the teachers.
And nice job not including slaughter.
Maybe when she’s older.
ahem…it’s um….good?
I beg to differ, I think Mrs. Beeler would be touched! And then probably recommend that you go ahead and use slaughter…
dude i think that was frickin’ bad A!! nice work!! (and also, i think you’re very crafty, and i LOVE gettin your babies pix on anything – just ask your husband about my cube!!)
awww what a GREAT idea!!
Thanks for posting it, I was all squinting trying to read it in the image
Ok, so you’re no Emerson or Frost but really? It’s GENUINE. Total score. These kids better get the best grades
it’s the thought that counts
and yours is quite cool
the kids will be honored
to take these to school!!
Maybe it’s that I’m simultaneously nursing while reading, but your poem made me cry.
Actually that poem is really good! Gold star for Zoot!
Haha well, I won’t say it’s brilliant poetry, but it’s awfully sweet, and I’m sure the teachers were charmed
I think your poem is precious and any teacher will be touched to receive it. You should not be embarrassed about that gift at all!!
Aw, I thought the poem was SWEET. Best of all, they can tell you took the time and effort to think something like that up.
I thought it was very sweet & touching! (and yes, I struggled to read it in the picture before I realized you posted the text below. . . d’oh!)
I’m not so good with the rhyming (or the crafts), so when it comes to teacher gifts, I stick to what I know: baking! Oh, and for big occasions, a Target gift card, because EVERYBODY loves Target. Right?
Aw, very sweet. I wonder what the teachers will actually do with them, though. Like, sure, they’ll really like it now and keep it on their desk or whatever. But what about next year? Or ten years from now? How can they throw it away, right? Isn’t that the same thing that THEY do to US when they send home bird feathers glued to construction paper?
I used to teach and if I had ever received a poem like that, I would have cried happy tears.
I think the poem is nice; plus, it’s the sentiment that’s the most important with a gift like this.
For what it’s worth, my pediatrician is named Dr. Slaughter, but I have a son. : )
I thought your poem was great. The sentiment is genuine, and that’s what really counts.
What are you talking about?? Your poem is pretty damn good!!
