About That “New Moon” Trailer…

THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON trailer

Yes. I’m about to write more about the New Moon premier than I did about my son’s first birthday. Please don’t remind him of this fact when he grows up. After reading my Pink’s awesome writeup, I had to do my own.

When that birthday party scene opened up, my first thought was: “WHAT DID THEY DO TO JASPER’S HAIR?” Dude. Seriously? It’s like bad 80′s Mom Hair. The kind that required hot rollers and Rave hairspray. SERIOUSLY? Jackson Rathbone is super-hot. Why must they make him look so ridiculous?

Beyond that…the scene was totally fine with me. However, I see Pink’s point here…

Let me ask you this, have you ever had a papercut? Did you ever toss aside the offending materials and exclaim “ouch! a papercut!” while drip-dropping blood on your hosts’ white carpet?

But here’s the thing: I like Kristen Stewart as Bella. I didn’t like her that much in that Adam Brody movie – but I really like her as Bella. I don’t know why, and I always understand where people are coming from when they criticize her, but I have really liked her performances.

I just wish Kristen Stewart wasn’t so obviously uncomfortable with the media. She comes off looking like a jerk, when in reality I think she’s just socially awkward. And dude – I can totally relate to that.

Now, the Edward/Jasper/Bella pushing slow-mo moment? Great. Brilliant. While I liked all three performances I totally agree with Pink here:

Jasper’s lame ass slow-motion run at Bella during the birthday scene is disappointing, but is quickly saved by Edward’s response. And so I’m thinking that New Moon will be very similar to Twilight: lots of lame, easily correctable awkwardness and so-so special effects, countered by Robert Pattinson’s magical ability to actually transform into Edward Cullen and remind all of us that Edward IS real and life WILL go on.

Robert Pattinson does make that scene. I didn’t mind Jasper’s part, but Pattinson does a spot-on Edward in that scene and I love it. Even when he leaves her in the woods, which totally made me cry. Again, probably because I really enjoy Stewart as Bella.

Now…the culmination of the preview: JACOB THE WOLF.

I did not have any complaints about the special effects because I was bracing myself for it to be SO MUCH WORSE. As a matter of fact, LilZ and I both had that “AWESOME!” initial reaction. And we watched it again. And again. And maybe again. I thought it was great. Maybe it’s because I thought Taylor Lautners was perfect, maybe it’s because I just love everything associated with the franchise. I don’t know. But I loved it. And can not wait. Pink puts it the best,

Friends, I love Jacob. I adore him. I am so, so glad that they didn’t pull an actor switch because I really think that Taylor Lautner is capable of BEING Jacob, perhaps as much as Robert Pattinson pulls off Edward. And since we know that Edward is going to be scarce in New Moon, let’s all breathe a hearty sigh of relief over that one.

I agree. As long as they don’t give him that horrible Too White smile this time, he’ll be brilliant. I think he’s dedicated and determined to own Jacob and I appreciate him bulking up to play the part as much as I appreciated Pattinson reading Midnight Sun to prepare for his role.

Although Lautner’s effort does seem a bit more…um…noticable.

And that’s all I’ll say about that.

And also? The makeup in Twilight was horrendously obvious, and it seems like a bit more realistic touch will be seen in New Moon. I mean, as realistic as you can get with for vampires and werewolves, right?

  2. ClassyFabSarah Says:

Yum, Taylor Lautner. Yum yum yum can’t wait for all the screen time he has. Yay!

I agree about Kristen Stewart – why does she have to be SO uncomfortable? Her dropping the popcorn at the MTV movie awards was just awful…. she is just so awkward.

    Is it November 20th yet?

  3. Heather Says:

I love it! I’m getting more geekily into this franchise than I had ever meant to, but oh well heh.

  4. Cindy Says:

Just so you know, you were actually the person who introduced me to Twilight in the first place… The book had been on my shelf, untouched for months before I read your Alpha Mom post about beeing a cool Twilight mom & saw the movie trailer on your site in late September. At that point I picked it back up, hoping I could finish it before the movie came out. HaHa. All I can say is thank heavens I had our first son in October so I had plenty of time to read because once I got past the first few pages of Twilight, it was like a wildfire – I finished the whole SERIES in a matter of a month, and that included a week off for Thanksgiving because I had family in town.

Anyway, thanks for posting about the trailer, which I frankly thought was awesome. I watch Twilight the movie because I love Twilight the book, but honestly the movie just isn’t very good – the special effects look like they only had a few bucks (which they did), it is too dark and jerky (which is Catherine Hardwicke’s style) and the screenplay was a little stilted. But I loved RPatz – what a perfect Edward – and while I didn’t love KStewarts Bella I did appreciate her performance, and I thought both did what they could with a sceenplay that couldn’t hope to convey all the emotion of the books.

I was really happy when they announced the new director for New Moon, especially since he’s got so much experience with special effects (and specifically animals interacting with humans). From this trailer, I already love that every scene has more color & more design than Twilight, and agree that if the trailer is indication, we are in for another ridiculously spot on Edward from RPatz.

And then there is the wolf. This is where they could have really lost me. But I got goosebumps when he explodes out of his clothes and into a completely legit wolf, all while leaping over Bella. And I know he’s still underage but let me just give a +1 to ClassyFabSarah by saying – YUM. I loved Taylor in the short lived My Own Worst Enemy (with another yum Christian Slater) and thought he did a great job with the short time he had with Jacob in Twilight. He’s going to kick ass and take names and I cannot wait.

I am a complete movie geek, especially when it comes to sci-fi and fantasy, so I am definitely a tough critic. But I defend myself by saying that it is all because I love the stories so much I just want to see them done right.

I might even let my husband see this one with me. But of course, not the first time – that one is all mine :)

Anyway, I read your posts regularly and really enjoy your style. I’m so sorry about your dad – I am dreading the day anything happens to either of my parents. Your pictures are so lively, and I love how much you adore your kids. Thanks for a fun way to spend a few minutes at work when I don’t feel like working.

  5. Michelle Smiles Says:

No. No no no no no. I will not be sucked into reading these books (because I couldn’t possibly watch the movies without reading the books first). I have mocked other mommas for being Twilight Cougars…I refuse. No. No. Stop tempting me.

  6. Tiffani Says:

I’m so excited to see “New Moon.” And I refused to even read “Twilight” until May. Then I read all 4 books plus “Midnight Sun” in a week and a half. Seriously good fun!

And I’ve watched the movie three times and want to watch it more, but I just don’t have time.

I agree that the makeup looks much better in “New Moon,” and Jasper’s hair sucks. And Jackson Rathbone is hot.

I actually like that Kristen Stewart is awkward in real life … makes her relatable. And Rob, well, he makes the movie for me. I can’t imagine anyone else as Edward. I love his voice.

OK, I’m done with the girly swooning.

  7. Maria Says:

I don’t know why I’ve been reluctant to get into this series. You’re a naughty girl tempting me this way.

  8. gutenmegan Says:

I have no real issues with Kristen Stewart as Bella either. For some reason, I think she’s well suited for the part. Before I saw the first movie, I totally thought I’d be irritated by her and was surprised when I wasn’t.

But when Kristen Stewart opens her mouth on behalf of Kristen Stewart? Less than impressive. And I can’t stop laughing at her accidentally dropping her MTV Movie Award the other day.

This is the first time I’ve ever commented on Twilight to anyone but my little sister. I don’t even feel ashamed about it! In fact, now I want to watch the first movie again.

  9. Randi Says:

No no no no no!! I didn’t like the trailer and I’ll tell you why – they switched an integral part! When Bella’s in the meadow with Laurent the pack of wolves saves her, but at that time she has NO IDEA that Jacob is a wolf. Yet in the preview it looks like Jacob bursts into wolf in front of her right there!

The idea behind the story was good enough – why do they have to keep changing the important stuff?! I think the entire franchise needs a new screenwriter desperately, forget about a new director!

  10. zoot Says:

Eh. I learned a long time ago via harry potter that you can never keep things the same. They changed a HUGE part in the first one too – several things – but I was fine with them. If I focus too much on the changes I would like these OR the HP franchise. I’m usually impressed they’re able to get the entire story into 2 hours.

  11. stacey Says:

I being Native American am very excited to see ALL the Native boys in this movie. I am just saying….I can’t wait to see more shots of the movie and hopefully it will be better than the first. Not that the first was bad by any means….just caused me to fall asleep last time I watched it.

  12. Jessica Says:

OMG I endured the awful MTV Movie Awards because I couldn’t wait to see this. And I laughed out loud on the bus this morning while reading your summary.

    1. You’re right, Jasper’s hair is tragic. It was tragic in Twilight but if he can soften his Edward Scissorhands look that he rocked in the first movie. I’ll consider myself happy.

    2. The scene at the house during the party was a little dramatic especially the paper cut part. That was all for dramatic effect but I’ll equate the acting as the same calibur as the PMS commercials. Just overdone.

    3. I fear that yes, this movie will be heavy on the cheese factor, but I didn’t get that vibe too much from the scenes we’ve seen. Maybe a new director really was the best thing for the franchise.

    4. I am also glad they didn’t recast Jacob as that just seemed so unnecessary. Taylor has proven that he can bulk up for the role (OMG DID YOU SEE HIS CHEST?) and I’m really curious to see him move forward with his role and play a bigger part in the next movie.

    5. The morphing into the werewolf was pretty bad a**. I was pleasantly surprised with how that played out and think that’s a good sign for the rest of the movie. I’m really looking forward to seeing that evolve too!

Plus, DID YOU SEE HIS CHEST? For 17, that’s not a boy, that’s a man. And I will totally watch and salivate.

    Great post!

  13. Tiffani Says:

Re: Randi’s comment on changing the movie:

I think the trailer just squishes together two different scenes from the movie: the meadow with Laurent (he hears Paul, I think) and then the porch scene where Jacob goes wolf (I think this might be when he goes after Paul the first time Bella sees them as wolves). Bella’s even wearing different clothes. :-)

Why didn’t they make 17-year-olds like that when we were that age?!

  14. bessie.viola Says:

Dude. DUDE. Zoot, you’re the one who got me into this whole Twilight thing, and now I’ve been squeeing like a teenager for the past two days over the new trailer. CANNOT WAIT.

Also… Kristen Stewart. I watched the replay of the awards last night and saw the dropped popcorn thing that everyone was talking about, and was just all “Whaa?” I couldn’t figure out if she is just completely socially inept (I mean, the intro to the trailer? She was so… flat) or if she was playing Bella at the awards show as well. Pattinson seemed to get a huge kick out of it, so I thought maybe she was just being Bella-ish?

Anyway… love it all: the books, the movies, the drama in the press. SO glad that you convinced me to read the books!

  15. Tara Says:

I also have Zoot to thank for introducing me to Twilight, and now I am so hooked, I already have a girlfriend-date for the movie in November.

I agree with a lot of the other comments here–LOVE Kristen Stewart as Bella, LOVE Robert Pattinson, am coming around to appreciate Taylor Lautner (he didn’t do it for me AT ALL in Twilight, but part of that was the awful hair, I think), Jasper’s hair is a big fat WTF, and WHOA, the wolf scene is freakin’ amazing. (Taylor has filled out quite, um, nicely.)

    I would add:
–I really, really hope that Edward’s family’s characters are less cardboard in this movie, at least for the brief time they’re in the story. I am having a hard time seeing the characters from the books in these actors so far, but I guess we won’t REALLY see them come alive until the third movie.
–I am surprised no one else has mentioned this–WHY is the wolf missing so much fur (on forelegs, rear legs, etc)? It looks like a cross between a wolf and a hairless chihuahua. Not a good luck, and I can’t for the life of me figure out why that would even be necessary from a production standpoint. Any ideas?

  16. Tara Says:

Uh–that would be LOOK, not luck. Should’ve proofread before I hit “Submit.”

  17. Janet Says:

lol the red eyes aren’t very well done…but Jacob? Changing? WOW!!!

  18. Rachael Says:

Can’t WAIT. Wolfy wolf. Really need it to come out… like, tomorrow!

  19. Devilish Southern Belle Says:

Haha, Jasper’s hair. It’s so horrible! It’s a wig because Jackson shaved a lot of his real hair for another movie he’s filming, so I guess there was no way around the wig :/ Another fan said it looked like he jacked a wig off a Nancy Reagan wax statue. And that’s it, dead on.

Not even Rob’s magnificence can keep me from cringing at that old-lady wig Jackson had to wear. It’s worse than Taylor’s wig!

  20. TC Says:

Don’t get me wrong, I’m an uber fan of the Twilight books, but the first movie just didn’t do it for me…not sure how I’ll feel about New Moon, but the trailer was actually pretty good and I’m soo glad they were able to put more money into CGI b/c Jacob transforming into the wolf was pretty kick-a**
