My Middle Name Is Not Grace
Many moons ago, when LilZ was playing soccer (and hating every minute of it) MrZ had to have a talk with me. He informed me that he didn’t think it was a good idea that I constantly joke about LilZ inheriting his clumsiness or lack of grace from me. “He may have gotten that from you, but you might remove any possibility that he overcome that if you keep joking about it.” Something to definitely think about. Yes, his soccer playing reminded me a lot of my own as a child. Struggling to run and kick simultaneously. Yes, he sometimes tripped over imaginary objects. Yes, he often ran into things that had not ever moved – like walls in our home. All of these things indicated a strong Zoot-ness in his grace, but why should I point that out? MrZ had a good point, if I gave him that excuse early on, he might not ever feel like he can move past it. Imprisoning him to a lifetime of bruised knees and scraped elbows.
SO – you will not hear me say those things ever often regarding any of my children. At least not if their in earshot. No matter how much it may be warranted.
However…
If I were going to? This would be one of those weekends I’d be joking about it. There were bonked heads on tables that had never moved. There were scraped knees tripping over flat concrete. There was a bloody lip and a bloody toe. One child went to bed last night with an icepack on their food while another went to bed looking like they had gone a few rounds in the ring with a heavyweight champ. Let’s just say this: There Was Not A Lot Of Graceful Performances This Weekend. Maybe the floors were all slippery. Inside and out. Maybe there were shifts in the gravitational pull that threw certain children off-balance. Maybe elves secretly moved walls in our home while we slept. Whatever the cause…this was a weekend of blood and bruises.
Or maybe, a certain parent passed on a few clumsy genes. Not that I would ever imply that while the kids were listening – of course. But if I did?
I’d totally blame the one with the goatee.

I love that photo of you and LilZ. I say that when all else fails blame your neighbor.
That is a great photo of you and LilZ! I’m not athletic-able. Balls and me don’t work. We just don’t. My husband is SUPER athletic. So he’s always saying to Lexi “I hope you got my athletic ability” and that makes me feel awful because ‘being like mom’ can’t be all bad. I am a relatively decent person otherwise. Why can’t there be a ‘I’m bringing clumsy back’ song? At least then I’d have a theme song.
My husband jokes about my lack of grace, also. I have a tendency to stumble out of nowhere.
The one with the goatee can carry a beer and a baby at the same time… thus I’m suspecting he’s low on clumsy genes. Sorry to burst your bubble
If such things were inheritable
then my hypothetical kids will definitely get it from me too! It’s a little ridiculous how often I manage to walk into walls
My family always said to me….
“welcome to charm school, Grace!”
…not my middle name either
Maybe the kids were sipping on daddy’s juice?
Okay, what’s REALLY funny is the way the baby’s eyeing that beer.
I am SO not graceful either. I have permanent scars on my knees due to falling as a kid. Oh and walls seem to jump out at me. I love that AndyZ is staring longingly at Mr. Z’s beer. I do that almost every day.
I never realized I was a klutz until I met my husband. Seriously. Even though I have constantly knocked into walls, tables, etc. my whole life. I blame it on my big feet, long legs and freakishly long arms. (Someone once told me “damn, girl, you’re all elbows and knees, huh?” Uh, I guess so?)
He thinks it’s hilarious, but he does try to *not* mention it around the kids. He’s a total jock. Oh, well. They seem to take after both of us, which makes it interesting around here.
Trust me, my middle name is not Grace either. I think I posted this one time before, but I fell on flat ground at a wedding reception. I had a camera in my hand which went banging along on the pavement. EVERYBODY turned around to look!
those are awesome photos!
I lack grace as well. I was so glad I didn’t bite it while out siteseeing the past week, because it is just embarrassing to do it in a town that you are visiting in!!
