BBQ and Birthdays
Category: Randomly | 28 Comments »
  • I survived the dentist yesterday. We also set out a torture plan for my mouth and I over the next few months. I need to finally get my wisdom teeth (top only) removed which I’ve known for awhile. Then some deep, beneath the gum cleaning treatments that will need to be done in two separate appointments. In other words? I need a whole new category here called, “Dental Hell.”
  • My birthday is next week and MrZ and I have argued over which weekend is my “Birthday Weekend.” He wanted to make plans next weekend because it follows my birthday. However, I think the weekend starting today is my birthday weekend because it’s closer to my birthday. Which is Tuesday. Where do you side on that argument? Both weekends? Awesome.
  • We were going to go to an outdoor BBQ and Bluegrass festival last night. However, on the way there the bottom dropped out of the sky and this insane storm unloaded sideways rain onto our evening. So, we opted for BBQ only and hit the closest BBQ place to where we were at that moment. And for the first time ever? NikkiZ ate BBQ. We can rarely get her to try anything, and she’s never even been interested in BBQ. But last night? OMG. She ate it ALL. She is a true Southerner. It just took awhile to emerge in her tastebuds. Next on the conversion list: Sweet Tea.
  • I have a new Etsy obsession. Wire wrapped rings. I ordered two from JulieRose (I upgraded to the Sterling Silver wire) and love them dearly. This is the one I’m now wearing on my wedding ring finger. Already it’s gotten tons of compliments beause it’s simple but definitely unique. LOVE IT. I will be ordering this one next, in case you were wondering.
  • I am a guest twice at Mamapop this week. My Pop Culture confessional is here and I also have done the Eye Candy for this week. (I can’t believe I forgot to include Michael from “Burn Notice”!) Come say “Hi!”
  • I’ve been a little sad I won’t be attending BlogHer this year. But it’s not something I can avoid as it overlaps with family matters that must be tended to. I’ve been trying not to think about fun times that I’ve had in the past or about all of the friends I won’t be seeing. (Although Ariana Huffington is in that 2nd picture, she is not the friend I’m talking about.) (Not that I wouldn’t be her friend – I would!) I may have to boycott all BlogHer related posts though so I don’t get to depressed. *sigh*

i’m also bummed that i’m not going to blogher this year. it’s seems extra sad because i could drive there in five hours…but, that means i live in michigan where the economy is at least slightly more horrifying than it is in the rest of the country, and i simply can’t afford it.

i had SO much fun in san francisco last year…and i spent so much money. and didn’t even think about it. it’s amazing how fast things can change.

oh, and this makes me regret even more that i wasn’t brave enough to say hi to you in chicago in ‘07.

I’m changed the reason I’m not going to BlogHer. From now on, I am not going to BlogHer because you will not be there.

  3. Crystal Says:

I definitely say take both weekends for your birthday. Heck, take the whole month if you can get away with it!

  4. Michelle Says:

I personally like to observe and celebrate my “birthday season” – two weeks before and two weeks after!

  5. April Says:

I always try to celebrate on the weekend after my birthday b.c I find if I do it the weekend before, I spend the weekend responding to people say happy birthday by saying “thanks! Not quite, though, it’s on Tuesday!” and qualifying the whole thing and trying not to make a big deal about it. Then I feel like later that I didn’t actually have a birthday, if that makes sense.

I don’t know, I’m weird. But it’s just like when I graduated college – I had to do summer school (to get to 150 credits to sit for my CPA) but I walked in May. So when people told me congrats, it was like “Thanks, but I still have classes left!” and didn’t feel like it was MY graduation. Then after the summer was done I was like, where’s my party, man? But alas, no festivities for being ACTUALLY done with college. Boo.

My husband, brother, and 2 of my BFF’s all have birthdays on 7/14 and THIS weekend is their birthday weekend! The weekend after is too late!

  7. Susan Says:

Have a happy pre-birthday weekend. OMG I love those rings. They are so cool — and affordable. I need some of the ones with buttons and some with stones and some with metal thingys …

    Thanks for sharing

  8. Scurvy Says:

I always think whichever weekend is closest to your actual birthday is your birthday weekend, so that would make this your birthday weekend. Although I do also like the idea of celebrating throughout the entire week and on both weekends. :)

  9. Michelle Smiles Says:

I love BBQ. I was so sad when we moved south but landed somewhere that doesn’t take BBQ seriously (N’ville just doesn’t). We’ve found a couple of places that aren’t bad though. I guess we need to go visit Memphis to try the BBQ.

    This weekend.

I love Etsy and could go bankrupt buying all of the things I love. I love those rings…my sister’s birthday is coming up…maybe I’ll get her one. Thanks!

  10. cursingmama Says:

You get both weekends…. everyone knows that if mom isn’t happy, nobody is happy ~ so they should really be wishing you a happy birthday month.

  11. Heather Says:

Gorgeous rings, I loved your confessional (though not of it totally surprised me lol) and happy almost birthday! Both weekends, definitely ;)

  12. Sandy Says:

I say celebrate both weekends! My husband works shift work so around here, we have done it both ways depending on his shift.

    Way to go NikkiZ!

  13. lisa-marie Says:

Oh, root planing? I had that done many years ago and survived it – you can, too! Also had my wisdom teeth out waaaayyy back in high school – all four at once! Piece of cake! Then again, I was on some awesome pain meds, so my memory’s a bit fuzzy. Good luck to you!

  14. Maria Says:

    1. Either “Dental Hell” or “Dental Detention” would work.

    2. I vote for celebrating both weekends.

    3. I could eat BBQ and sweet tea every day.

    Have a great weekend!

  15. stacey Says:

Birthday weekend? Birthday week. Birthday Month. I say Birthday Month. Mine is next month. for once not excited.

good luck on the dentist stuff. I didn’t do well with my wisdom teeth, I had all removed. I was a baby about it. I had it done like 3 years ago?

  16. Therese Says:

You should definitely have this weekend as your birthday weekend. Alway go with what’s closer! If it falls on Wednesday, do both! :)

  17. jen @ negative lane Says:

Thank you! You just made me feel 100x better about not going to BlogHer (especially when the last two years I couldn’t go and promised myself I would this year). While it’s taking place, those of us that can’t go can post about how much fun we are having at home. Um… yeah.

Birthday? Take the whole week and bookend it with the weekends. That’s what I always do. (Except mine is actually on a Saturday this year, so that blows that whole scheme.)

Also, just STOP with the Etsy already! (Just kidding.) I never bought anything there before you posted that picture of your camera strap and now I am trying my hardest to stay away because I could seriously go broke there. It reminds me of my half.com-CD-buying obsession of a few years back. Which is why I now have like 4,732,879 songs on my iPod now. (Also, like 300 audiobooks. It is a sickness.)

And finally, (re: your pop culture confessional), you can design your own Converse? Holy hell, lady, you ARE trying to bankrupt me, aren’t you?!

  18. Jonni Says:

My birthday is the 22nd, so it is my belief and understanding that people born in July take the WHOLE MONTH to celebrate the one day that we graced the Earth and everyone on it with our presence. And they should us with their presents ;-)

So…if I had to take a side in your “argument”…you win!

If you only use THIS weekend as your birthday weekend, your birthday falls short….think of it like Book Ends. This weekend and next :-)

Hope you have a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

  19. Bonnie Says:

This weekend. MrZ needs to accept the celebration.

  20. LaLuna Says:

OMG, wire wrapped rings. I just bought three of them. AND… design your own Converse? Crap. Gotta go google that!

  21. Brie Says:

Both weekends, but I like Michelle’s suggestion of 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after. Although, I consider any and all days after the official birthday season on which I receive belated birthday gifts to be my birthday. I get to celebrate mine again on July 24 (actual bday: May 24) because my husband bought me tickets for a concert that day- so I’m celebrating my birthday again on concert day!

  22. Zandor Says:

For your birthday I think you should start the weekend before and go until the weekend after.

  23. Average Jane Says:

Happy birthday month! (You know you get to celebrate all month, right?)

So sorry you won’t be at BlogHer this year. :(

  24. lynne Says:

Glad to hear your survived the dreaded dentist. I made it to 33 years before my teeth needed some serous work (ummm maybe this because between 26 and 29 I was too poor to got to the dentist). Since then it seems every year I have to have major work done. I;d blame it on all the gummy bears I’ve eaten during all night animation fests but really it’s my wisdom teeth impacting on other teeth causing the problems. I also have the pleasure of having my wisdom teeth out soon too. Yeah great.

Sorry to hear your festival plans were rained off.

  25. ladybughugs Says:

Both weekends? Oh, heck no! You need at least all week ENCOMPASSING both weekends!

  26. Snarky Mommy Says:

No BlogHer? I am soooo bummed!

I vote for celebrating both weekends.

  27. Devilish Southern Belle Says:

A BBQ & Bluegrass festival? I never hear about the fun things till they’re either over or cancelled :/

Happy belated Birthday! I personally think birthdays should start the weekend before the birthday, and continue throughout the next weekend. But that’s just me. Not that it happens that way for me, but it would be fun! Really, I would think the weekend closest to the actual birthday works.

  28. Kerri Says:

Because of you I am completely addicted to etsy.com! I’ve ordered 4 rings in the past week.
