When we went out Friday I hoped to get a good shot of the three kids together for the Christmas Cards this year. I found a nice little nook with pretty leaves and good shade and forced them to sit there until they could sit there no longer. I just hoped that if I jumped and laughed and made funny faces enough that at least ONE shot would turn out good. And I was right. ONE shot did. But let’s examine a handful of the misses for a moment as proof that often times? When I show you these great pictures of my kids? There are 20 not-so-great versions sitting on my computer at home. I’m a shotgun photographer, I guess. Focusing more on quantity and just hoping for a chance of quality along the way.
I have no idea if more professional photographers use the same technique or not…I feel like with toddlers in the picture you kinda just click and hope for the best. My one BEST shot of that little spot? Turned out more perfect than I could have hoped. I think at that one moment I was jumping up and down talking about Elmo. I guarantee you, however, if I try that again with the next photo session? AndyZ will not be impressed. Those tricks only work once, I’ve learned.

That’s the beauty of digital cameras!
I usually take at least two when I doing posed pictures because with my luck someone has their eyes closed or looks away.
Awesome picture of the one that turned out great for you-will make a great Christmas card for you!
That is a *fabulous* photo. I hope you also have a large print made that you can frame for your home.
What a lovely family you have!
Right.
Christmas card pictures.
I should get on that.
Thanks for the reminder.
Yes, professional photographers absolutely use the same technique of taking multiple shots and hoping for a few good ones. At least now they don’t have to process so much film before seeing which ones are the best!
Great shot!
And I don’t know about pros but I take as many shots as I possibly can figuring one should turn out decent. I can’t imagine having kids before digital photography allowed that luxury of quantity!
Awesome shot! Your new career in professional photography awaits…
My brother is a professional photographer and I know for a fact he shoots over and over and over, in quick succession, to get one good shot. If it works for you, do it! I LOVE the end result, that is a great picture of your beautiful kids.
That really is the perfect pic!
I think multiple shots when shooting children are absolutely essential!
You are going to treasure that photo for years to come!
I LOVE it!!!
Where did you take those? We are going to take Jillian this weekend to try and get some good fall shots and I don’t know where it town to go.
It is perfect: I’m a quantity shooter, too. Especially with the moving of the little people, who refuse to become more statue-like. I feel like if I know more about taking pictures, I’ll get better, but so far, it’s still more miss than hit.
I take a bazillion photos at a shoot and hope for the best. I’ve learned talking goofy and snapping quickly is the best technique with the little ones-especially if there is more than one little one.
That is a really great picture of them.
