My family has typically come into town for Christmas OR Thanksgiving every year. This year they come in for both and I couldn’t be more happy. I have always used this visit as my motivation to update pictures in frames around the house. I twittered about doing this one day and it seems that I’m slightly unique in this endeavor. Yay! Finally! Something I might be able to throw out to the internet as a Good Idea to pay it back for all of the Good Ideas I’ve gotten in years past.
I take so many photos (Really?) that it seems silly to never print and frame any of them. Sometimes I’ll buy new frames for photos but we don’t have a lot of free shelf-space in this house. So, I do an annual replacement in frames already up around the house. I don’t replace every photo in every frame every year. But I replace at least 75% of them. Sometimes I just like a picture too much to replace. Other times it’s just a perfect fit for the frame and I cant replace it until I find a suitable picture for that particular frame.
Putting up the new photos every year guarantees my family something new to look at. Especially since most of the time they’re in some of the new photos. This also just allows me a chance to find my favorite photos from the year past and make sure I do something with them. Sitting on flickr is great for you and me, but not really great for anyone in my non-internet life. It is hard to see some of the old photos covered up, so I’m always on the quest for unique ways to display a lot of photos in a small area so I don’t have to spend my life savings on frames and I can still keep my favorite old ones displayed while adding new ones. I ordered this magnetic rope last year and displayed these photos:
However, this year I tried to figure out how to cram more photos on the wire. I found these magnets (100 for $5!) and they’re almost the exact ones that come with the rope from Photojojo. I was able to put more photos on the same wires this year. I also opted to print them without the border this time, just to spice things up a bit.
I think it turned out great and I have plenty more magnets so I think I’m going to order more of those wires. I’m almost doubling their capacity allowing me to keep some of my favorites from the year before while adding new ones to update.
Do you do this? Update frames around your house? Or does a photo sit in the same frame forever?

I was just looking at a picture of my husband and I from 2001 and thinking “Holy crap, we really need to update that.” What a cool idea! I’m a little confused though. Is this a big metal pole/vent thing in your house? I need to check out the link I guess. I don’t know what I’d stick metallic ropes to…
AH HA! I get it now. Boy, do I feel dumb.
The magnets are for the PICS not for the wall!
I like the idea of updating photos but most of the ones I choose to put in frames I LOVE so then I am sad when I try to change them so sadly there is a lot sitting in the frame forever in my house.
For instance, my son is 4 and his 10 month old baby picture was in a frame on a side table. He had his first “school” photo this year and it was almost physically painful for me to change out that 10 month photo for his new school photo. You could say ‘well buy another frame’ but we have limited space for frames plus I think there is a point where you just need to STOP buying frames because it gets to look cluttered and silly, you know?!
I love these ropes – I too saw them last year and thought OHHH that is fun and I could easily switch photos out. They look great in your house! Not sure where I would put them in my house though.
Finally, I do a lot of changing of photos at work so I always get to look at the ones I love but do not love enough to put up in the house if that makes sense. I probably have 75 pictures up in my cubby and I change them about every three months or so.
This is a long comment for a post about pictures. I LOVE pictures!!!
The pictures that are in our frames are the same ones that we first put in there. I’ve thought about switching them out, but then I start getting sentimental. That rope looks like a good idea!
I’m tempted to get some magnetic string stuff so that we can have more photos and pictures up – it might be smart and modern enough for CJ to agree!
Can I ask if there is any wear on the photos from the magnet? Do the edges curl at all? It looks awesome on your wall! Everyone on my list is totally getting one of these this year!
The photo rope is an awesome idea! Thanks for sharing. This is the perfect answer to the stack of photos I’d like to display, but don’t want to buy a million frames just to display them. I also like the idea of swapping out photos…I’m just not very good at it myself.
We’ve kept a lot of the same pictures up for years! But, we’re trying to get better at printing pictures and I’ve been buying new frames everytime I go out to shop (and if they’re on sale).
We try to use new frames, but, we also don’t have that much room so we’re going to have to do a switcharoo for some…
Love this idea – you are so clever
I take thousands of pictures every year and don’t have any up. I am trying to come up with a plan to print and display the pictures.
I have a photo wall set up and I’ve been really trying to change out the pictures seasonally. It is a lot of work though! But I must say I love them. I need to hunt down some Christmas pictures now to change out the pumpkin & Halloween shots. (I put up a combo of old and new)
Yours is definitely easier to change out as often as you please!
I pretty much never change out my frames. In fact, I have empty frames that I’ve somehow never gotten the pictures into. So, I got the DEKA wire kit from IKEA, and, like your photo rope, it can hold a lot of pics with ease – although now I’m eyeballing that rope for some other location in the house…
I have about three dozen frames on the wall that I try to rotate. In fact, it’s about time to rotate mine but I just have to get prints made. I love that idea you have there. Very cute!
I love these. I recently bought some for my mom and now I want my own set of three. Maybe 5. Thanks for the link to the magnets too. I change out some of mine, but there are a handful that will never change because I love them so much.
That rope picture thing is a really good idea. It looks nice.
I have no idea what this post is about becuase CAPTAIN HAMMER!!
That is all.
Of course I read the post….
Nice idea- I might have to try that! I keep adding to my pictures all the time.
