Rough and Tumble

Resting in the shade

I often write about my daughter’s obsession with princesses and pink and dresses and jewelry. And these things are all very true. But I also often describe her as my, “Rough and Tumble” girl. She is showing quite an athletic streak. We noticed it first in soccer as she discovered the euphoria associated with stealing the ball from someone else. Unfortunately, the “someone else” was often a member of her own team. She is quite determined to be awesome at t-ball, even though she’s one of the youngest on the team by two years in some cases. She wants to race everywhere and she’s constantly covered in scratches and bruises. She never worries about her hair and always has marker on her hands.

These are the things that make her my girl. I never had any real athletic ability, but I’ve always been a bit Rough and Tumble myself. I loved making messes and rarely stayed clean. Even as an adult few items of my clothing aren’t stained in some way or another. I love being outside, even if it’s just drawing with chalk on the sidewalk. Mud has never scared me and I often walk through puddles.

It’s nice to see that. Part of me mixed in there, somewhere. I wasn’t into the princess thing like she is, but I always had scabs on my knees. Her’s may be from running the bases where mine were from busting my ass down the stairs. But it’s still a Sisterhood…of the Rough and Tumble girls.

  1. Even though she’s only 20 months old and things are liable to change at this age, I think my daughter is turning into the same way. I attribute it to her brothers, though. You have to be a little tougher when you have brothers to push around.

I’ve never been particularly sporty – i have my girlie days but most of the time i am in jeans or other trousers – I don’t like wearing dresses (Although I do for important occasions etc.)

Does that make me a Rough and Tumble Girl?

I wish we were neighbors. First off, our kids would get along like gang busters. Plus, I have that same shirt for one of my girls. And also? You seem like an awesome person. Damn geography.

Oooh someone cursed geography on your website. Could get ugly ;) Haha

I love Nikki’s shirt. Think they’d have it in my size? :P

The sisterhood of the hole-y-kneed pants! I love it. I’ve been glad to have a boy because I love the rough-and-tumble – good to know it can come in little girl form, too.

Oh, and I feel obligated to point out that I’m reading your post WHILE watching Jamie Oliver thanks to your twittering… thanks for making my entertainment decisions for me tonight…

Hi. I’m Kim.

This is my blog that I've been writing on since January, 2004. I call myself Zoot as it's a derivative of an old childhood nickname. I used to write about my struggles to have children, but eventually I succeeded and now, I write a lot about those kids. I don't use my kid's exact names simply because if someone Googles their very unique names in the future, I don't want them stumbling upon my entries about boobsweat. I mean, would you hire someone whose Mom writes openly about such topics? NO. YOU WOULD NOT.

I love taking pictures and carry my camera (almost) everywhere I go. This means you'll see a lot of photos on this site. I also periodically post recipes I like as I've been slowly (but surely) learning to cook and I like to share my discoveries. Finally? I'm an annoying pop culture fanatic so I'll periodically ramble about Hunger Games or the latest Parks and Recreation.

I hope you like it here. If not? Please don't tell me. I cry easily.
