Art/Dog Saturday on the Square

Fashion

We went to an art/dog festival Saturday. What? Doesn’t that make sense to you? Well, it was a merging of a few events, fundraisers for the local animal shelter and festival for local artists. There were hundreds of people walking around with their dogs and dozens of crafters selling their wares. I’m fairly certain it had a better name than the Art/Dog festival, but I don’t think it was anywhere near as descriptive.

Since it started around 10am, I told Nikki it could be a little cool but that it would get hot before we left the festival. This is the outfit she came up with to meet the challenge. You may not be able to tell from the photo, but those boots are fake uggs. Meaning they are lined with fake fur. She is wearing fur-lined boots and shorts. Isn’t that what you wear in the Autumn to battle the change of temperatures throughout a day? Well, you SHOULD.

I don’t remember Knoxville having festivals like this when I was growing up, but I’m not sure if it’s the kind of thing that would have appealed to my Dad or not. Either way, Huntsville has events like this regularly and I love it because it’s something FREE that we can do together. Well, FREE until you find local crafters/artists you can’t resist. Then it COST ME MILLIONS.

What about your city…do you all have festivals like this? Huntsville has a lot of qualities representative of big AND small cities, so we’re kinda of unique.

Our little town has something like this twice a year. Oktoberfest was this past weekend, too. My son did that bungee thing for the first time (like Nikki does at the mall). He was very serious about it, no smiles at all, but he said he liked it. Sadly, I tend to tire out very quickly especially in the heat, so we didn’t get to spend as much time having fun as I would have liked. But he did get to eat his first ever funnel cake, after we made sure it didn’t have dairy in it. He considered that the highlight of his weekend!

Okay so I’m not sure of the shorts/boots combination however she’s in pink and demin rather than crazy combinations.

We have the River Festival which is bi-annual and there is a big float display (the last two years I’ve taken lots of pictures as a charity my Mum works with had a float in the fair)

We have a lot of festivals, although I don’t think there were very many, 20 years ago when I had little kids. I did try to keep my eye out for things like parades and other free events to take them to.

I love NikkiZ’s ensemble. What first impressed me was how color-coordinated it is. And while boots with shorts (Aren’t those capris? They come well below her knees.) is not a common combination for most people, it’s no big deal when it comes to kids.

I live in Austin (TX), and we’re kinda the same way. Lots of big city/small town qualities, especially in my neighborhood. We do outdoor movie nights every weekend in October, community charity stuff, a neighborhood vegetable co-op with a nearby farm, events for holidays, etc. One of my very FAVORITE holiday festivals (Zilker Park Trail of Lights), though, isn’t happening this year. I have no idea how long it’s been going, but decades. Budget cutbacks led the city to cut way back last year, and this year, it’s quietly just NOT HAPPENING. Makes me sad.

I think an Art/Dog festival sounds like the perfect place for you ;-)

Hi. I’m Kim.

This is my blog that I've been writing on since January, 2004. I call myself Zoot as it's a derivative of an old childhood nickname. I used to write about my struggles to have children, but eventually I succeeded and now, I write a lot about those kids. I don't use my kid's exact names simply because if someone Googles their very unique names in the future, I don't want them stumbling upon my entries about boobsweat. I mean, would you hire someone whose Mom writes openly about such topics? NO. YOU WOULD NOT.

I love taking pictures and carry my camera (almost) everywhere I go. This means you'll see a lot of photos on this site. I also periodically post recipes I like as I've been slowly (but surely) learning to cook and I like to share my discoveries. Finally? I'm an annoying pop culture fanatic so I'll periodically ramble about Hunger Games or the latest Parks and Recreation.

I hope you like it here. If not? Please don't tell me. I cry easily.
