Not Quite Her Mother’s Curls

After Nikki got out of her bath Sunday afternoon, she asked me to put her hair in “Two Twisty Braids” for family dinner. That means Two French Braids for those of you watching at home who don’t know my daughter’s language. I had braided E’s hair the night before just to see if I could (I could!) so she had it on her brain. Since the hair was wet, and she slept in the braids that night, when I woke her up for school yesterday her hair looked like this:

Curly

SHE FREAKED OUT. In a GOOD way. I told her to run look in the mirror and she kept saying, “I love my curly hair!” She just couldn’t stop talking about it and feeling it. It was SO CUTE. I told her next time I’d put gel in it first so the curls would last longer the next day.

“Wait. What? They’ll go away?!”
“Yes, honey. I’m sorry. As the day goes on your hair will get straighter again.”
“Aw, man! I want curly hair FOREVER.”

Hee. I find this humorous because she hates my curls. Not how they look, but because their existence means she can’t brush my hair. She tries to come at me with a brush and I’ll scream, “NOOOOOO! Don’t brush my hair! It will get stuck! You can’t brush curly hair!” If you don’t know why I would freak out so much? Then you’ve never actually gotten a brush stuck in your hair. IT IS NOT A FUN THING. Trust me. But of course, her hair is fine and her curls weren’t real so she could brush her hair fine. She kept saying, “See, Mom? The brush doesn’t get stuck in MY curls.” Yes, dear. I know. But our curls are still very different and STAY AWAY FROM ME WITH THAT BRUSH.

I told her we’d do it again this weekend, if she wanted. “Yes! YES! I WANT TO!”

And I know, if she had been born with my hair instead of her Dad’s? This would have been her reaction the first time we ever used a flat-iron on her hair. The grass is always greener, you know.

That’s so adorable! My oldest has very straight hair and mine is as curly as yours. We had her hair curled for a wedding once and I’ve never seen the child so excited. LOL! I totally understand the brush comment too. She’s begged me to play beauty parlor and I cringe at the thought of a brush in my hair. So we just play with Barbie’s hair instead.

  3. I was the same way as a kid. I have stick-straight hair, so my mom would braid my wet hair with tons of little braids, and I LOVED the fun curliness the next day.

we used to do the tiny braids all over too! you can get closer to the scalp that way! and also, if you curl the ends under the rubberbands at the bottom the ends will curl under neatly also. plus they dry faster the smaller they are! she is just a doll zoot!

So cute! The grass is definitely always greener. I have the “barely have some wave, must scrunch with lots of gel and mousse to get body” kind of hair but have ALWAYS wanted curly hair. It’s the nature of the beast I guess, want what we can’t have. He he. :-)

No one would ever understand why I wouldn’t let people brush my hair at slumber parties. It’s terrifying to get a brush stuck! You just know that at some point someone has had to have one cut out.

It looks great. And I’ve almost always loved my hair with its curls. And I do ever let people brush it, because I love having my hair played with, but then I make sure there’s a ponytail holder nearby to re-contain it until the next shower.

I was complaining to my hairdresser because my hair is so thick and takes forever to dry and won’t hold a curl but won’t go straight either, and the woman in the next chair said fervently that she would KILL to have thicker hair, and my hairdresser said in an affectionate voice, “Nobody wants what they have!” So I try SO HARD to appreciate the ups of my hair and realize those ups are attached to downs, but OMG I am so jealous of curly hair!!

For whatever it’s worth, my daughter’s hair was a LOT like N’s looks to me when she was little—thing, fly-away, and nearly stick-straight. My hair is curly like yours, and curly hair is supposedly dominant, so I was baffled.

Puberty brought curls. Now, I don’t think hers will ever be as tightly-wound as mine, but it is definitely NOT straight. She delighted in it for the first few months and then… asked for a flat iron for Christmas. ;) After a few months of constant straightening she’s more or less learned to embrace the curl.

All of which is to say: Wait and see. She may get curly yet!

THIN. Not thing. Hi, I’m illiterate.

Hee-hee. I love my straight hair (now), but when I was young I loved to curl it. I don’t know how many nights I slept on foam rollers… my mom even permed my hair a few times when I was younger than 12. We had the hot rollers and a curling iron.

I don’t like having anyone else comb, brush, or “play with” my hair, either (otoh, a hair dresser knows what she’s doing, and doesn’t want to fiddle around, so as long as they don’t want to park some of my hair behind my ears, I can handle that — plus, they mostly use combs because they’re dealing with wet hair; you definitely don’t want to brush wet hair).

You can get a brush stuck in long thick hair, too… If Nikki’s hair were much longer (and thicker), she’d already know that. :) But how cute to think she can convince you otherwise. :p

My daughter hates that she can’t brush her hair, and she still tries. She’s only three, so I’m not sure if the curls are here to stay, but my hair is straight as can be, and will totally need tips on how to care for her mass of fine, soft, curls.

Hi. I’m Kim.

This is my blog that I've been writing on since January, 2004. I call myself Zoot as it's a derivative of an old childhood nickname. I used to write about my struggles to have children, but eventually I succeeded and now, I write a lot about those kids. I don't use my kid's exact names simply because if someone Googles their very unique names in the future, I don't want them stumbling upon my entries about boobsweat. I mean, would you hire someone whose Mom writes openly about such topics? NO. YOU WOULD NOT.

I love taking pictures and carry my camera (almost) everywhere I go. This means you'll see a lot of photos on this site. I also periodically post recipes I like as I've been slowly (but surely) learning to cook and I like to share my discoveries. Finally? I'm an annoying pop culture fanatic so I'll periodically ramble about Hunger Games or the latest Parks and Recreation.

I hope you like it here. If not? Please don't tell me. I cry easily.
