Speaking Of…

  • We went on a Mother’s Day picnic yesterday and some nice lady offered to take this picture. My instinct is ALWAYS to say, “No Thank You” because I hate having my picture taken. HOWEVER…I try to resist that urge and just let the person do it and then never look at the picture again. BUT THIS ONE! How great is it? A family picture for Mother’s Day…perfect.
  • Speaking of Mother’s Day…Nikki bought me the Cake Pop book from Bakerella. Evidently she picked it out herself…which was very impressive. She said she was trying to decide between that and a Twilight book. She knows me well.
  • Speaking of books…I just finished the YA dystopian fiction Divergent. It was REALLY good. A great mix of Hunger Games and Matched. Although…something about the heroine, Tris, made me love her even more than either of the other two female leads. She’s totally my fave BFF now! The book had the violence and death of The Capitol plus the pre-destiny and group manipulation of The Society. I read it in less than 24 hours. READ IT.
  • Speaking of books (again)…the new Sarah Dessen comes out TOMORROW. E and I have been waiting for this since…well…her last book. I’ve read the first chapter of What Happened To Goodbye and I was already hooked. NOW…Dessen is very formulaic. She has a female teenage lead, alone for some reason, isolated, an outcast. And somehow she still finds “love” in some ways. Her books are all the same. But you know what? SO ARE KRISPY KREME DONUTS. And I go back whenever I can get. Same is not always BAD, as long as it’s what you are expecting. If you love one of her books? You’ll love all of them. I LOVE ALL OF THEM.

The line “Her books are all the same. But you know what? SO ARE KRISPY KREME DONUTS.”? Made me laugh out loud. Hee!

I can always get behind a comparison of favorite authors with Krispy Kreme donuts.

I hate, hate pictures of myself – Iam trying very hard to get past that. They are actually starting to ask questions “why aren’t you in these pictures?” when we look at their baby snaps. Sigh.

I totally needed something new, quick, and engrossing to read. Thanks for the recommendations!

    Happy Mother’s day~~^^~~x

Haha I like the Krispy Kreme comparison ;-) I find I’m the same way with cheesy romances!

Thank you muchly for pointing out that formulaic is not necessarily bad. If I want to read a book that makes me THINK, I will- but sometimes all I want is an easy coast to the Happily Ever After. It’s like the literary equivalent of mindless TV.

I am always looking for new books to read so thank you!

    Also, Happy Mother’s Day a bit late…

Just finished Divergent myself! I agree; amazing book; what an amazing story. So creative! I also very much enjoyed the Hunger Games series. Currently reading Delirium by Lauren Oliver – another “dystopian YA” type read that you might enjoy if you liked Divergent and Hunger Games. I am going to check out Matched. Also Sarah Dessen’s books; not familiar with her. Thanks for the book suggestions! Cute photo!!

I’ve gotten so many wonderful YA recommendations from you–and many of them are not only books that *I’ve* enjoyed, but one my 12yo son has enjoyed too. Thank you so much for adding to my list of must reads. YA fiction is such a treat! It’s something I didn’t realize how much I missed until I started sharing books with my son.

  9. Amber says:

I’m reading Divergent RIGHT NOW thanks to your recommendation and OMIGOSH. I actually think I like it BETTER than Hunger Games!

  10. Jessica says:

Hi there, thanks for the YA recommendations! I have to say, I LOVED Hunger Games but didn’t love Matched, do you think I would still like Divergent?

    • zoot says:

I think it’s more like Hunger Games — there was a little bit of a similarity in Matched in the AGE 16 getting “assigned” to someone/something — but beyond that? It was more like Hunger Games with the badass female lead who is shockingly able to KICK MAJOR ASS. Heh.

  11. Misti says:

I read the first 100+ pages online & loved it! Hopefully I can go tomorrow to buy it. Must read ASAP! I haven’t read “Matched”, but if you liked, odds are I will too. *adding to my TBR list*

I just finished reading What Happened to Goodbye and I think you might like The Big Crunch by Pete Hautman – similar storyline, not quite as predictable ending.

Hi. I’m Kim.

This is my blog that I've been writing on since January, 2004. I call myself Zoot as it's a derivative of an old childhood nickname. I used to write about my struggles to have children, but eventually I succeeded and now, I write a lot about those kids. I don't use my kid's exact names simply because if someone Googles their very unique names in the future, I don't want them stumbling upon my entries about boobsweat. I mean, would you hire someone whose Mom writes openly about such topics? NO. YOU WOULD NOT.

I love taking pictures and carry my camera (almost) everywhere I go. This means you'll see a lot of photos on this site. I also periodically post recipes I like as I've been slowly (but surely) learning to cook and I like to share my discoveries. Finally? I'm an annoying pop culture fanatic so I'll periodically ramble about Hunger Games or the latest Parks and Recreation.

I hope you like it here. If not? Please don't tell me. I cry easily.
