Older.

Nikki is in school now. And while she probably isn’t any different than she was two weeks ago, I feel like she is so much older. Talking about hot lunches and recess. P.E. and the Library. Being teased and making friends. Two weeks and suddenly I feel like she is no longer my little girl.

She’s always had a tendency to act older. She has a teenage brother so she has a lot of contact with teenagers. Add in my tendency to let her watch shows like Glee with me, and she has always cared more about style and attitude than my 5 year olds. This is both hysterical and dreadful.

But something about school. The things she talks about just make her seem like she grew up over night. She was simply outraged that no one even considered the possibility that she could have gone to the Katy Perry concert on Friday with E when a ticket became available. I mean…COME ONE. Why not?

Am I just imagining things? Did you see school make a difference any in your child’s maturity and attitude? Did it suddenly feel like they were years older?

Holy cow, she even LOOKS like she matured! She is absolutely beautiful. She’s going to be a heart breaker one day.

  2. I agree with Kim. She LOOKS more mature :D

But, no, my kids got immature when they started school. I blame the kids they’re in school with. Most are pretty well behaved and pretty good, but the few ruin the many, it appears :(

YES. Totally and 100%. We’re on the other end of the spectrum: Liam seems so very *immature* to be going to school and compared to other 5 year olds. And I was so hoping that going to school would help him catch up. So far, I really think it has! He has shown a lot better impulse control and attention to rules since he started. I can only hope this trend continues!

Isn’t it amazing the vast difference in kids in kindergarten? Size, maturity, knowledge… and eventually they all kind of catch up to one another. I think it’s kind of fascinating to watch.

And Nikki looks years older than 5. I’m sure she’d love to hear that. ;)

Gosh, I can still picture her adorable little toddler self SO easily. I just had a nephew born a few days ago, and I can’t even imagine how much it’s going to freak me out how quickly he grows and changes!

My 5yo daughter started kindergarten on Monday, and she’s been sassy and borderline obnoxious all week. Then it hit me, duh, she’s not taking daily naps like she did in daycare. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to get her to go to sleep earlier. We’re working on that. Hopefully once she gets more sleep then she’ll turn back into a little angel.

Hi. I’m Kim.

This is my blog that I've been writing on since January, 2004. I call myself Zoot as it's a derivative of an old childhood nickname. I used to write about my struggles to have children, but eventually I succeeded and now, I write a lot about those kids. I don't use my kid's exact names simply because if someone Googles their very unique names in the future, I don't want them stumbling upon my entries about boobsweat. I mean, would you hire someone whose Mom writes openly about such topics? NO. YOU WOULD NOT.

I love taking pictures and carry my camera (almost) everywhere I go. This means you'll see a lot of photos on this site. I also periodically post recipes I like as I've been slowly (but surely) learning to cook and I like to share my discoveries. Finally? I'm an annoying pop culture fanatic so I'll periodically ramble about Hunger Games or the latest Parks and Recreation.

I hope you like it here. If not? Please don't tell me. I cry easily.
