Nap Time!

DSC_5069

A few weeks ago I was sick and home alone and needing somewhere to nap. My bedroom was not an option because the guy across the street had his saw out in his driveway which was all I could hear in my bedroom. I went to Wes’s room instead, because it’s on the back side of the house which has fewer noise options. I had the BEST. NAP. EVER. in his twin bed.

Friday night was a rough night of little sleep due to Wes’s leg cramps and my need to hear my phone ring at 2am when E needed me to pick him up after his Katy Perry concert. Once I finally got Wes comforted and back to sleep, I was so worried about missing E’s call I barely slept until he was home safe and sound. That gave me about 2 hours before I had to get up and run 7 miles with my half-marathon training group.

In other words? By the time the kids went down for their naps on Saturday? I WAS SPENT.

So…what did I do? Put on my jammies and decided to take a nap too. Since I was worried about the noise factor again, I just pulled out the trundle under Wes’s bed which has NOT SHEETS and an ancient mattress, and went to sleep under a blanket and with a pillow from the couch. I woke up 3 hours later. SECOND. BEST. NAP. EVER.

I don’t know if it’s the isolation of that room with only one window which opens up to the gully (no neighbors) and that is shaded (stays darker) – but it is my nap heaven. It turns out that, when I need a nap, Wes’s room is the magic spot for me. It used to be a giant bean bag in our “Man Room” (Can you tell I love naps?) but that didn’t always work out because that’s Donnie’s favorite nap spot too. Now? I HAVE MY OWN.

Do you nap? Do you have a nap spot in your house? Or are my husband and I weird because we both love naps AND we have our favorites spots which to enjoy them?

I once napped in the middle of the living room – I was watching TV lying on my front and I dozed off and woke up about an hour later – because of my choice of napping position I got up and felt like I’d been kicked in the chest so it was a good nap because clearly I needed it but woke up all achey.

I dozed off sat up straight on my friends sofa once – it was about 3 or 4 weeks after we started going to our new church so I was still getting to know people and we were invited round for lunch – I was still studying full time and working on a Saturday so by Sunday I was exhausted. I dozed off which was hilarious but I think my new friend could see the funny side of it.

I had a friend who fell asleep stood up on the tube – I never actually knew the full story just that bit about it.

I love a good nap! I don’t really have a spot for it. The bed is where I usually go, but in our old place, I sometimes liked to nap on the couch WHILE the mister was two feet away playing Xbox. Go figure.

Weekend naps are practically mandatory for us. Generally we just go back to bed, but sometimes a nap on the family room sofa is just the thing.

I don’t necessarily like having to take naps, because I usually feel like I should be doing something more important (there is ALWAYS homework to be done), but my son is waking up super early these days, so it’s pretty much necessary right now. I just put him down for his nap on my bed and then lay down right next to him.

Our bed is the only place I can nap. We have room darkening curtains so it’s always a bit dark and cool. Love it. I tried napping on the couch before but my oldest always interrupts. Always. She always needs something or is going through there to the kitchen and rattles stuff around. We have told her a zillion times that when her sister naps, it’s quiet time for everyone. Usually DH sleeps on the couch (he can sleep through anything), oldest watches TV, youngest in her bed, and I’m in our bedroom. I love, love, love naps though I don’t always get them as often as I’d like.

I really love napping on my couch! The bed is always a good place too. I find the best inducer (is that a word?) of naps is to wear eye shades. They look dorky as all get out but they make such a huge difference for me!

Also, go you for running 7 miles! Esp on 2 hours of sleep!!!

I love to nap in a chair that my son calls the cozy chair. It’s very soft and when I sit in it I just cannot stay awake. When he is at school the house is very quiet, so the cats and I will pile on that chair and take good, long naps together.

I cannot nap. I hate naps. I am jealous of nappers. If I nap, that is a clue to my family that I am really, truly sick. Or pregnant. :-) I didn’t even nap with my babies were newborns!

I’m just like you, cagey! Not a good napper (except when I’m sick or pregnant). If on the rare occasion I’m so exhausted as to need a nap and actually be able to fall asleep, I usually wake up feeling weird and disoriented, and not even that well-rested. So I tend to avoid naps, and will just go to bed early if I’m sleep-deprived.

Lately I’ve become an early-to-bed, early-to-rise kind of person, going to bed as early as 8:30.

Mostly I try to keep the same schedule vis-a-vis bedtime and wake-time (I think it’s healthier, and less stressful), so I rarely find myself in an OMG-I-need-a-nap situation.

I wasn’t a good napper as a child, or at least as a pre-schooler. I can remember being sent to my room for a “nap,” and just waiting it out until it was time to get up.

I wish I could get my kids to nap, then I would nap. I am just about ready to re-implement a nap time for my 3 year old.

  10. Frances O'Flaherty says:

The only time I nap is when I accidentally fall asleep during the warm, hazy part of the afternoon when I was actually reading or possibly watching TV and suddenly realize that “hey, nobody really said/wrote that, I just made it up in my head. . . I must be falling asleep. . . ” but if I try to transplant this wonderful sleep moment to anyplace more comfortable than the chair I’m sitting in – *poof* – no nap whatsoever. I am Jealous of people who can nap. Or run 7 miles :)

Randomly, the Power of Six was released yesterday! I’m a quarter of the way through and living it. I remembered you liked I am Four so thought I’d pop in. :)

Hi. I’m Kim.

This is my blog that I've been writing on since January, 2004. I call myself Zoot as it's a derivative of an old childhood nickname. I used to write about my struggles to have children, but eventually I succeeded and now, I write a lot about those kids. I don't use my kid's exact names simply because if someone Googles their very unique names in the future, I don't want them stumbling upon my entries about boobsweat. I mean, would you hire someone whose Mom writes openly about such topics? NO. YOU WOULD NOT.

I love taking pictures and carry my camera (almost) everywhere I go. This means you'll see a lot of photos on this site. I also periodically post recipes I like as I've been slowly (but surely) learning to cook and I like to share my discoveries. Finally? I'm an annoying pop culture fanatic so I'll periodically ramble about Hunger Games or the latest Parks and Recreation.

I hope you like it here. If not? Please don't tell me. I cry easily.
